Dual Booting And XP, Invisible?

Jun 22, 2008

Dirve 0: Primary Partition for current XP, another Primary Partition for a new install of Vista Drive 1: The data drive. I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)

I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.

Dual Booting With 32 Bit After 64 Bit

Jul 6, 2008

I just purchased a machine with a 64 bit OEM. I have created another partition because I want to install 32 bit on there. However, it is not working so I was wondering if there was something I am not doing right here. I want to use the 32 bit for internet access and itunes and the 64 bit for gaming. I do not have any discs with the 64 bit OS on it either everything I have here is 32 bit.

Setting Up Dual Booting

May 26, 2008

I've just got a new computer with Vista. I want to set up a dual boot system so that I can also access XP.

I have read that this is much easier to do if XP is the first OS, followed by installing Vista, but I can't do that.

I have also read that it can still be done by creating a new partition from within Vista, then installing XP into that. I understand that this process will overwrite the Vista boot loader and the computer will then only boot into XP, but that a programme called VistaBoot PRO can then be used to reset that, and you are then left with dual-booting.

But has anyone had any experience of doing this? Or are there any foreseeable problems.

E.g. - when I start installing XP, will it need access to the motherboard/graphics card drivers?

One thing I'm wondering about is, at the stage where I can only boot into XP, the hard disk is a SATA one (no RAID set up) and I seem to recall XP having issues with these at boot-up?

Dual Booting With Ubuntu

Mar 23, 2008

I have been playing with Ubuntu guest virtual machine on Vista host.I am toying with the idea of dual booting and installing it properly. Can I run an Ubuntu Live CD on a Vista machine (to check whether all my hardware is compatible, etc) without it affecting my Vista installation in any way ? As I understand it, I will just be booting from the CD without putting anything on my hard disk at all.But I would seek assurance that it really isn't going to do me any harm.

If I decide that my hardware is OK (its a fairly high spec machine running Vista Ultimate 64 bit) what is the best way to go about it? I have a 750Gb disk which I reckon I can afford to give 200Gb to Ubuntu. Should I repartition from windows? Do I need another program (if so what?) or does Windows itself handle this? How do I install Ubuntu but still retain control over which operating system I want to run? Vista will still be my main OS. I don't particularly want ubuntu to have control of the booting process.....

Dual Booting: No Option For Loading Xp

May 26, 2008

I have had visa and xp in a multi boot configuration. However, decided that I do not need xp any more. I have vista and xp on two physically seperate hard drive. So I used 'Vista boot pro' to delete the windows xp MBR. When I reset the computer it worked fine and their was no option for loading xp. Than I decided to erase the drive that xp was on (not vista), using East-Tec Eraser 2008 to wipe the drive. This took 5 hours as the drive was 100 gb. When it finished I then reset the computer and the screen said 'No operating system found'. I then used the original visa dvd to fix the boot record, however, when I tried there was no record of any operating system. I know that the installation is still there as I saw it using the find driver dialog box.

Dual Booting And Ghost Imaging

Apr 13, 2009

I normally work in a straight Windows Vista Business environment on my laptop using Ghost 2003 to image my setup (which occasionally causes problems with the image files but that is another issue) - I was trying to setup a dual boot - XP SP3 and Vista SP1 environment with XP as the primary boot partition installed (20 GB) and the rest of my laptop's HDD for Vista (130 GB approx) I got the dual booting done with BCDedit to fix the Boot Manager but after I ghosted the image (successfully), verified the image (successful) and did a test restoration (successful) - I was unable to boot into XP or Vista - XP would complain at NTLDR and Vista at first about WINLOAD and after repairs with my Vista DVD, would BSOD during boot - what did I do wrong and/or how can I fix it?

Invisible Emails In Folders

Mar 23, 2008

I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and migrated my old Outlook Express folders and emails as per the Help instructions. All appeared well as all the old folders appear in Windows Mail. However there appear to be NO emails in any of the folders. What is also strange is that some of these apparently empty folders appear in bold displaying the number of unread emails in the folder. Presumably some indexing fault has occurred - repeated attempts at importing have failed.

Hoe Recover Invisible Document Folder?

Sep 5, 2009

I am knowledgeable about XP and have used VISTA ultimate for months now but I have found a problem I cant figure out involving the "Document" folder and files under the "Owner" user. Up to to a few weeks ago I did have the document folder under the user "OWNER" encrypted using Vista encryption option and as expected it would show up as blue file names and could be open and saved under "owner". Now when ever I open up any of the edit programs ( Word, Notepad ) it doesn't show that there is a document folder. If I save a file it goes some were never to be found again. When I look for the document folder ( C: userowner ) All the folders are there Except the document folder. I check under the DOS prompt and it cant see it there. When I try and create a document folder it says that it already exist.

Upgrade Install From Ultimate:Task Manager Remains Invisible.

Jun 30, 2008

I am using Vista Ultimate x64 Build 6001 SP1.1 year old Some of the symptoms are: When I click on System Restore the process starts (visible in Process Explorer) but the UI it is not visible. I used System Restore from Vista Repair to restore to a moment before the start of these symptoms. The symptoms persist. Task Manager also remains invisible. However I can use Process Explorer (Sysinternals) When I click on? Turn Windows features on and off? Windows Features? box is displayed with?

When trying to uninstall a program or to install an msi file, Windows Installer displays "Preparing to install." and remains so forever. Click Cancel, after 10 min or so?Install server is not responding, or, Could not find Install Server? When I shut down the computer Logging off is displayed until I use one of the hardware buttons. Chkdsk found nothing wrong.Sfc /scannow doesn? start. In Safe Mode it is impossible to start any program. Otherwise, most programs work fine although they go frequently in Not responding mode. I used all AV, Spyware and rootkit scanners for x64 I could find. Same result: No infection! I see only one explanation: one or more Vista System files are corrupted or missing. How can I repair Vista without having to reinstall al programs and settings? Is it possible to trick Vista to make an Upgrade Install (which I understand
keeps the programs and settings) from Ultimate to Ultimate? When I try a message tells me that I can upgrade only to a newer version.

Files Invisible And Can View All Hidden Files

A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:

- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........

Not Booting Using Vista

Jun 3, 2008

I've just started having boot problems with Vista. I've had no problems in the past, but earlier this evening it would restart itself while loading Vista (the green bar loading stage). I used the Startup Repair option from the Vista install disc, and the log shows it successfully repaired a corrupted system volume (exact wording may have been different). Now it boots as far as loading a black screen and the mouse cursor, but doesn't get to the Aurora (blue-Vista-Windows-logo-loading thing). I have tried subsequent Startup Repairs, CHKDSKs, Memory Diagnostic checks, all with no errors to report. Unfortunately, I disabled System Restore a while back... Something I now regret doing! At least I know what I'll be doing as soon as I get it running again! My system is an ASUS M2N-E motherboard, AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+, Corsair 2x1GB XMS2 RAM, Sapphire ATi Radeon 3850... And so on and so forth. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit as well.

A friend's Vista computer started booting only as far as the round Vista logo then froze. I took the PC home and using my keyboard, mouse and monitor did some maintenance, upped the memory etc and took it back. It still froze at the logo. I replaced the keyboard and mouse and monitor one by one to no avail. Took everything home and it worked as a system, but at his house - still freezes. Is this an electrical problem - if so how could I find out? Their other computer works fine.

Freezes After Booting Up

Aug 19, 2009

After booting up the computer the desktop freezes immediately. If it doesn't freeze up immediately I'll have some functionality, but minimal. I'll no longer have access to the internet (no network adapter present), can't run programs (they fail to open) or can't install programs/updates. I have even gotten a couple of Blue screen error messages such as: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

In safe mode with networking I do have access to the internet. When I try to download updates in safe mode I can't because Install shield will not work, or some other excuse. There are no restore points to restore to. There was a Windows Framework update on August 7th. I tried to uninstall it, but apparently it was never installed properly. No blue screens while in Safe Mode. I've been trying to problem solve this on my own, but with my limited computer repair skills I'm scared to try things.

Booting Into Windows

Oct 23, 2008

I have a Gateway laptop that has (or had ) Windows Vista Home Premium x86 installed. It was a dual core Turion with 2GB RAM. Anyway, here is my problem(s):

When the computer first comes on, right after the Gateway screen it tells me:
System Config Data Read Error.
That is right when it turns on. The BIOS detects the hard drive just fine.

The second problem is:

It tells me that

Windows Failed to start. File: BootBCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot config data.

I tried to do a system repair with the Vista CD. It took about 10 times for it to work. If I turned the computer off, there is a 50/50 chance it would do the same thing and not work. I was chatting with Gateway support yesterday and the tech told me that Windows could be messing with the BIOS. I find that strange because I thought onceWindows took over, the BIOS has nothing to do with how the computer operates.

Well, I tried doing a system repair and it does not detect the Windows install at all. I figured well, I'll do a clean install and get rid of all of the crap that Gateway puts on their computers. I did that. I was able to make a new partition and format the drive. Windows is able to see the drive, but it tells me that it does not meet the criteria for the install. It will not go any further then that.

Gateway is going to replace the hard drive and if that does not work, they are going to service the laptop because I've only had it for a few months now. It worked fine on Tuesday, on Wednesday it did not work at all. Even with the hard drive out, it still tells me System Config Data Read Error on the BIOS screen. Just wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

I'm leaning more towards a drive controller failure or BIOS problem. If that is the case, then the motherboard needs to be replaced,
