Slow Response Times When Opening/closing Apps And Programs
Apr 16, 2009I need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

May 3, 2009My basic setup is hanging off a Netgear DG834GT, which then connects to a Netgear FS608 (10/100 switch).
On this switch I have my old laptop running XP Media Centre, my spanking new desktop running Vista Ultimat x64 (fully SP1'd) and a Buffalo NAS DH500GL.
All sit within a foot or so of each other and connect via cat5e.
When writing to the NAS from XP, I'm getting write speeds of about 3.7Mb/s.
When writing to the NAS from Vista, I'm getting about 40kbs (yes, 'k' not 'M')
I get a similar 40kbs if writing from Vista to a shared doc area on the XP laptop.
Copying from the NAS to Vista (and XP) I get 3.7Mbs
Internet speed if similar on both for download (about 8Mbs) although I haven't tried upload speeds.
I've tried the auto-tune tweaks as suggested by Shane, and turned off DFS replication as suggested by DMEX.
Also tried plugging both the Vista box and the NAS into the DG834 incase the switch was causing the problem.
None of those helped
NAS firmware is fully up to date, as is Netgear DG834, and obviously the FS608 has no firmware to upgrade anyway.
At the moment I'm stuck with copying a file onto USB on the Vista box, plugging the USB into the laptop and uploading to the NAS from there - which reminds me too much of sneakernet technology .
Slow Hard Drive
Mar 23, 2008I have Vista Ultimate, my PC is a Dual Core Pentium Extreme 3.2 Gig with 4Gig RAM.
I have two SATA Hard Drives, both Western Digital, my C: Drive is a 10,000RPM the second drive is 7,200RPM,both are about 40% full.When I run HD Tack I get much better performance from the 7,200 drive, about 75 Mb/s than from the 10,000 drive, 55Mb/s,I have run tests on the drives and both are testing as okay, no errors or issues.

Sep 6, 2008Ive been having some serious performance issues with hard drive xfer speed and performance, but I am not sure if I can narrow it down specifically to the HDD. The primary time where I get bad performance is when downloading files. It all started when I first installed vista and was downloading all of the updates and SP1. After a brutal night of waiting around for the files to download and install (I'm talking hours), performance did a huge jump, but was still sub par from before I reinstalled. Currently when downloading files from EA store, bittorrent, or any large file, say Vista SP1, my computer slows down to a halt. I defrag weekly, used an external defrag program for >64MB files. I used the tutorial to increase SATA drive performance, tried a few other tweaks on the tutorial forums, but nothing seems to work. It seems to be much worse when I try to unzip/unrar or otherwise process large amounts on my HDD. Ive done virus scans, spyware scans, used system optimizers, but I think im missing something.

Invisible Emails In Folders
Mar 23, 2008I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and migrated my old Outlook Express folders and emails as per the Help instructions. All appeared well as all the old folders appear in Windows Mail. However there appear to be NO emails in any of the folders. What is also strange is that some of these apparently empty folders appear in bold displaying the number of unread emails in the folder. Presumably some indexing fault has occurred - repeated attempts at importing have failed.

Jun 22, 2008Dirve 0: Primary Partition for current XP, another Primary Partition for a new install of Vista Drive 1: The data drive. I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)
I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.

Up to to a few weeks ago I did have the document folder under the user "OWNER" encrypted using Vista encryption option and as expected it would show up as blue file names and could be open and saved under "owner". Now when ever I open up any of the edit programs ( Word, Notepad ) it doesn't show that there is a document folder. If I save a file it goes some were never to be found again. When I look for the document folder ( C: userowner ) All the folders are there Except the document folder. I check under the DOS prompt and it cant see it there. When I try and create a document folder it says that it already exist.

Oct 11, 2008this is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, hd's, cpu, ram, etc):
symptom:
after a day of two of creating a user account, the hd access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. when you use explorer and want to access the hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. when browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc.
creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!
what i've tried so far:
- disabled indexing (windows search service)
- disabled hard drive indexing
- tried booting up as ide, as well as ahci
- created new install with raid0, and same issue.
system:
* e8400
* asus p5q-e with latest bios
* 2 x 320 wd 3200aaks sata drives, 1 x 250 wd 2500aaks sata drive
* asus sata dvdrw drive
* 4 gb crucial ballistix pc2-6400 (ddr2-800)
i've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. but even when disabling this, it still happens.
i've googled for over 2 weeks. i've done 3 fresh installs, i've replaced all the hw, and used 3 different copies of vista ultimate, with same results!

Chkdsk found nothing wrong.Sfc /scannow doesn? start.In Safe Mode it is impossible to start any program. Otherwise, most programs work fine although they go frequently in Not responding mode. I used all AV, Spyware and rootkit scanners for x64 I could find. Same result: No infection! I see only one explanation: one or more Vista System files are corrupted or missing. Files Invisible And Can View All Hidden Files
May 8, 2009A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive
May 2, 2008I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?

Apr 18, 2009About 2 months ago I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my PC. About 2 weeks ago it starting rebooting sometimes when I open something like an image file or even Internet Explorer. It doesn't happen evey time and only happens about once a day (but only when I go to open something). I want to figure this out so that I don't lose any data or end up with some data corruption. I have run the Windows memory diagnostic tool and it didn't find any issues. The only event in the Event viewer that even related to the issue, was an event logged after it finished rebooting that stated the PC was shutdown improperly.

May 1, 2008For a short time I had installed pkzip. It is now uninstalled, but apparantly has left Windows Explorer as the program used to open zip files. When I click on a zip file, Windows explorer opens, closes, opens, closes ad infinitum. Only recourse is to force a reboot.
I would like to change the default opens with ... to something that works. I see that on my XP computer the recommended program for opening zip files is called "Compressed (zip) Folders". I can't find such a program on Vista. Also, the only recommended program showing up on Vista "Open With" is Windows Explorer, which I know is a disaster.I can right-click and select Extract All to work around this problem, but would like to get the Open function working correctly.
