Tested ram with MemTest86 for > 8hr; passed. Tested HDD with HDD [ WD SATA; 160 GB ] diags; passed. I am helping a friend, who said the laptop, HP Pavillion dv6245 was slow. I uninstalled Ad Aware 2008. Now, the only slowness I have been able to uncover is opening the system restore interface.
I need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAbout 2 months ago I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my PC. About 2 weeks ago it starting rebooting sometimes when I open something like an image file or even Internet Explorer. It doesn't happen evey time and only happens about once a day (but only when I go to open something). I want to figure this out so that I don't lose any data or end up with some data corruption. I have run the Windows memory diagnostic tool and it didn't find any issues. The only event in the Event viewer that even related to the issue, was an event logged after it finished rebooting that stated the PC was shutdown improperly.

View 5 Replies View RelatedFor a short time I had installed pkzip. It is now uninstalled, but apparantly has left Windows Explorer as the program used to open zip files. When I click on a zip file, Windows explorer opens, closes, opens, closes ad infinitum. Only recourse is to force a reboot.
I would like to change the default opens with ... to something that works. I see that on my XP computer the recommended program for opening zip files is called "Compressed (zip) Folders". I can't find such a program on Vista. Also, the only recommended program showing up on Vista "Open With" is Windows Explorer, which I know is a disaster.I can right-click and select Extract All to work around this problem, but would like to get the Open function working correctly.
how to create a set association for attachments ending in .pps. I have found the default location in control panel but am afraid to click on any of the options lest it mess up the opening of other attachments.

View 4 Replies View RelatedBeen using the forums a lot. I downloaded 7zip for V64 as an msi file. I clicked it and nothing happens. I then associated it with msiexec.exe out of syswow64 and then system32, no luck. I keep getting a dialogue box listing batch mode flags.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I click on a web link in an application, it opens the url in MS Word, not Firefox (default bowser).
For example:
In CCleaner if I click the 'check for updates' link in the bottom of the window, Word will open up, a download box will appear and then it displays the website as a document.
This happens for all apps, however it doesn't happen if I click on a .html/.url document from explorer, that will launch Firefox just fine.
My CD Tray is now opening and closing every 2 min. If i put in a disk, such as a game disk, and start the game, the tray will stop opening and closing. Once I stop the game, the tray starts opening and closing again.
auto execute does not work when I put a disk in.
I have run Norton 360, it shows no vurus or spyware.
A pretty dumb question but I'm stumped. I am using Vista.
My Windows mail screen opens normally but when I double click to open a message, that screen opens with only half the message visible with the rest offscreen to the left.
Unable to drag screen to the right.
I get "IE8 stops working" messages whenever I open a second tab, this problem started after enabling "Google Chrome Frame" Add-on. I like to keep this Add-on as it makes IE8 faster, I would appreciate any workarounds to resolve this, I have attached some info from event viewer.

I was just wondering if it is possible to "open" a Windows XP bkf file in Vista?
I have recently moved over to a new PC and backed up all my previous PC.
But when I go to open it it doesn't recognise the file ending.
My OS has been very stable (latest patches etc applied, no new software/hardware). When I rightclick on the Sndvol.exe applet in the SysTrack the menu appears. I can choose Playback, Record, etc. but NOT Open Volume Mixer. Nor do I see the slider. When I left click on the Open Volume Mixer it looks like it triggers an Event to the OS, but nothing happens. I have rebooted (warm & cold) and even Restored to an earlier date without success.
