Slow Response Times When Opening/closing Apps And Programs
Apr 16, 2009
I need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.
My CD Tray is now opening and closing every 2 min. If i put in a disk, such as a game disk, and start the game, the tray will stop opening and closing. Once I stop the game, the tray starts opening and closing again.
auto execute does not work when I put a disk in.
I have run Norton 360, it shows no vurus or spyware.
Everytime I open a game the game freezes for about 10-30 seconds, and then begins to load.. This also happens when closing takes about ten to thirty seconds, and then finally closes... This happens with every single game I had.. This didn't happen in the beginning but started about three to four months ago.. I searched for other threads in different forums.
I often get this short hissing noise when I either open/close/minimize/maximize a window or pass the cursor over the sidebar. As far as I can tell, this only happens when the sidebar is activated. how I can get rid of this sound without having to close the sidebar?
With windows xp you only needed to ctrl-alt-del to view running programs and close them, before installing new software. How do you close programs for xp?
Everytime i start up vista most of my programs 'dont respond' and vista prompts me to close them. This happens with 7-8 programs, but as soon as this is done. i can re run the programs afterwords without any problems. Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it? ive run a virus scan and spyware scan and nothing has come up.
this is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, hd's, cpu, ram, etc):
symptom: after a day of two of creating a user account, the hd access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. when you use explorer and want to access the hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. when browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc. creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!
what i've tried so far: - disabled indexing (windows search service) - disabled hard drive indexing - tried booting up as ide, as well as ahci - created new install with raid0, and same issue.
system: * e8400 * asus p5q-e with latest bios * 2 x 320 wd 3200aaks sata drives, 1 x 250 wd 2500aaks sata drive * asus sata dvdrw drive * 4 gb crucial ballistix pc2-6400 (ddr2-800)
i've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. but even when disabling this, it still happens.
i've googled for over 2 weeks. i've done 3 fresh installs, i've replaced all the hw, and used 3 different copies of vista ultimate, with same results!
update: here is a video of the problem: Internet - windows vista hard drive performance issue
I think I accidentally selected the option to open up all files in Internet Explorer when I got a pop-up requesting it when I tried opening a valid file.
Anyone know how to restore this on Windows Vista?I can't open MOST of my files (especially critical ones), let alone Internet Explorer or Firefox, only this Safari browser! :o
Somehow my Trash Bin icon has disappeared from my desktop and I can't even click on the Change Desktop Icons link after I right-click -> Personalize because of the above problem.
PC has 2 users. One user cannot open any programs, web browsers etc. Upon clicking on the program one is given a screen saying Open with (then file/prog name). Recommended program which is always IE. Other user is fine.
I am having a problem with programs that I have downloaded. I try to open them and I get this statement: This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package.
I downloaded Version 3.01.1 of Firefox from Mozilla in order to replace Version 3.5, which was malfunctioning with graphics problems. However, I could not istall it as I was given the message that the downloaded file was from an Unknown Publisher and that there was no digital signature or that the signature was invalid. It asked me if I wanted to install anyway so I said yes. However it would not execute and said it would notify MSft of the problem.
I've tried downloading other files, Avast for example, and got the same message(s). I went to tools/internet options/Advanced/Security and checked "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid" and unchecked "Check for sinatures on downloaded programs". This didn't work either.
I installed a game from Oberson via internet. I cannot delete this from my files. It says cannot open Install.Log. I've deleted them before throught the control panel but this certain one and one from Games I can't delete. I can't figure it out or where to go to find it but control panel.
I have a folder in my D drive in which i hav 60GB of movies, but whenever i try to open the folder it takes lot of time to show all the files. But when i access much bigger folders (100GB) in some servers through my network, it opens very quickly(seconds). Why is it so happening.
I got my brand new (custom Puget Systems) computer last Thursday with Vista Ultimate pre-installed. Today, Vista Ultimate (32-bit, SP1) got profoundly goofy. This new computer has an XFX nVidia 780i motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz) CPU, and 2 GB of RAM on OCZ DDR2-800 Reaper chips. Today, Vista has stopped opening Microsoft programs such as Vista's pre installed games, "Windows Ultimate Extras", "Windows Update", the "Default Programs" page, "Windows Explorer", and "Control Panel". (This is not an exhaustive list. The "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank. When I click on "Windows Explorer", I briefly get an error message telling me that "Windows Explorer" is not responding, and that Vista is looking for a solution, but that message disappears quickly on its own.
Other programs open and run just fine. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player open OK. All non-Microsoft programs seem to open and run without problems. I scanned the computer with the anti-virus program, but the problem continues. Before this problem, I ran Windows Update several times since I got the computer on Thursday. In addition, I have been moving data over from the old XP computer and I have uploaded programs including "notepad++". I might consider using the "system restore" function, except that the "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank....
I can't see my cd-drive in My Computer or device manager. I could reinstall windows, because quite new computer, but because I do not have cd-drive visible...
start > programs > accessories > system tools > system restore, or from desktop shortcut created from same entry, When opening system restore, it takes, by the clock, almost 3 minutes to open. Also happens in safe mode. That which I have tried: sfc /scannow
Tested ram with MemTest86 for > 8hr; passed. Tested HDD with HDD [ WD SATA; 160 GB ] diags; passed. I am helping a friend, who said the laptop, HP Pavillion dv6245 was slow. I uninstalled Ad Aware 2008. Now, the only slowness I have been able to uncover is opening the system restore interface.
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create and association in the Set Associations control panel" I have been having a problem with my computer for several days now. Opening all programs causes me to recieve this error message. I have to use right click + Run as Administrator to use any of my programs. I have done some forum surfing and tried several recommended techniques for correcting this problem but to no avail. I downloaded the exefix_vista reg file but the very same problem prevents me from merging it (I even tried fixing the reg extension but that failed aswell). I have run the sfc/scannow in command propmt but that came up empty. I would have fresh installed but I am away from home and do not have the means to reinstall vista. I apologize if this post seems in any way redundant but my forum searches have failed me. HELP! PLEASE!
ever since i install Kaspersky 7 i have noticed that it seems to make my computer slow down. Sometimes when i go on the internet it will once in a while just freeze for a sec then continue. Also some 3rd party programs seems to have problems. Take gunbound (internet game) for example:
(copy and paste from other forum) ever since I first installed KAS 7 (Kaspersky Antivirus) (registered)My GunBound Revolution game cannot start My gunbound gives me the error:.......
I recently had a power failure whilst working on my PC - I restarted it - but started getting problems - I have put both C and D drives through the Check Disk Utility. To all intends iand purposes the Pc appears to be workin, except:
1. The Mouse pointer has the `working in the background`i.e.the revolving circle which goes on for 5 secs then off for 1 sec and back to 5 secs etc.I have tried changing the pointer but to no avail.
2. I can not delete anything in the C/ directorory Program Files.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1. I have Norton 360 installed as well as Windows Defender. Norton and Defender run at different times on different days. All of my e-mail is scanned before it is installed on my computer. There are no known viruses on my computer. A few days ago I noticed that my CPU would average nearly 80 to 90 percent. When I pressed ALT-CTRL-DELETE it would not respond. I ran taskmgr from the command line to see what processes were running. Nothing out of the ordinary was running.
I did see explorer.exe maxing at 50 percent at times. I read a few comments about this issue and one response was to delete ( I normally rename) vdmdbg.dll When I tried to do this I would get access denied. I did attempt to change the ownership but was unable to. I also changed my login process to require ctrl-alt-delete. When I did that it still would not accept it. I ran the login screen utility to allow me to enter the ctrl-alt-delete from the gui which did work.
When I post a question on a newsgroup and get an email stating that I have a response and I click on the "read and rate the response" link I get a new Internet Explorer window that remains blank. It also has the word "Done" in the lower left corner. Does anyone know why? Is this a new problem in Vista? They seem to keep poping up.
My old PC ran Windows XP and Outlook Express. My new PC is Vista and Windows Mail. I moved all of my ISP settings from Outlooks Express to Windows Mail. I can compose and send mail. I can also receive mail. Anytime I try to response to mail, I get the following error message -
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Re: Numerous Countries Have Recently Dropped The Dollar as Their Reserve Currency . . .', Account: 'mail.kingwoodcable.com', Server: 'mail.kingwoodcable.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
The subject in the error message is differnt depending on what I'm replying too, but the error code is always the same. I called support at my ISP and after about 2 hours of troubleshooting he told me the problem was with my mail client. I am running Trend Micro virus scan but I get the error message even when it's disabled. If I compose a message from scratch and send it, things work fine. It's only when replying to emails that I have the probem.
This problem have been bugging me for about a year now. Whenever I bring up a new window (where you can browse for files), when opening, saving or importing something into the applications, so when I rightclick anywhere (the space, the folders or files), it just hangs for a minute (sometimes longer), while I see an hourglass-mouse-cursor, and I can't do anything about that window. I can tab to other programs, though. Sometimes there is also the same delay, when I right-click an icon (of an application that does not exist) on my Quick Launch bar. I have tried different applications, like ShellX, ShellMenuView and ProcMon. I've also tried removing some keys in regedit, to get rid of the extra rightclick options (like Winrar).
I just recently bought 'Vista Home Premium 32 bit'. Throughout the whole time of installing and setting everything up, the whole system was very slow. I tried inserting a disk and it took ages to get a response, I chose to install something from the disk... and everything froze at that instant.
I have a module that needs to attach to my vista x64 machine and I keep getting errors as i copied below. Asked for vendor help of the product and haven't gotten a response yet. how i can get the drivers into my system to make them work. See Below errors:
See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box. ************** Exception Text ************** System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:Windowsdriver~1usbser.sys'. at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath) at System.IO.File.InternalCopy(String sourceFileName, String destFileName, Boolean overwrite) at System.IO.File.Copy(String sourceFileName, String destFileName) at X2FlasherInstallationWizard.Form1.CopyFiles() at X2FlasherInstallationWizard.Form1.btnNext_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.OnClick(EventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e)....
Clicking screensaver, or any other constituents of Personalization, brings no response. The "hand" icon doesn't do anything regardless of which item it is pointed at. Very frustrating as I particularly seek to review my screensaver choices already installed.
I think the answer is yes, but I am not sure if there are special things that must be done. I am looking at purchasing a new laptop and I have a choice of a 64 bit OS or the 32 bit OS. I am concerned about backward compatibility because I don't want to purchase all new applications.
