I have used it a total of 5 hours. It suddenly stopped opening files of anything at all. I didn't like vista to start with so i went out and bought Windows XP home to replace vista. for some reason durring setup it can find everything but my hard drives. does anyone know if i will be able to replace Vista?
View 9 RepliesI got my brand new (custom Puget Systems) computer last Thursday with Vista Ultimate pre-installed. Today, Vista Ultimate (32-bit, SP1) got profoundly goofy. This new computer has an XFX nVidia 780i motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz) CPU, and 2 GB of RAM on OCZ DDR2-800 Reaper chips. Today, Vista has stopped opening Microsoft programs such as Vista's pre installed games, "Windows Ultimate Extras", "Windows Update", the "Default Programs" page, "Windows Explorer", and "Control Panel". (This is not an exhaustive list. The "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank. When I click on "Windows Explorer", I briefly get an error message telling me that "Windows Explorer" is not responding, and that Vista is looking for a solution, but that message disappears quickly on its own.
Other programs open and run just fine. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player open OK. All non-Microsoft programs seem to open and run without problems. I scanned the computer with the anti-virus program, but the problem continues. Before this problem, I ran Windows Update several times since I got the computer on Thursday. In addition, I have been moving data over from the old XP computer and I have uploaded programs including "notepad++". I might consider using the "system restore" function, except that the "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank....
S.O. Vista Home Premium SP2 Problem: opening folders. For some time it is impossible to open the folder double click, crashes with error message: Windows Explorer has stopped working .... I can only open them with right-click Explorer, while right click Open gives me the same problem. I tried, in vain, downloading ShellExView and disabling all non-Microsoft items.

View 9 Replies View RelatedFor a short time I had installed pkzip. It is now uninstalled, but apparantly has left Windows Explorer as the program used to open zip files. When I click on a zip file, Windows explorer opens, closes, opens, closes ad infinitum. Only recourse is to force a reboot.
I would like to change the default opens with ... to something that works. I see that on my XP computer the recommended program for opening zip files is called "Compressed (zip) Folders". I can't find such a program on Vista. Also, the only recommended program showing up on Vista "Open With" is Windows Explorer, which I know is a disaster.I can right-click and select Extract All to work around this problem, but would like to get the Open function working correctly.

I have recently moved over to a new PC and backed up all my previous PC.
But when I go to open it it doesn't recognise the file ending.
I have Vista and Adobe Photoshop configured to open picture files. I am trying to open several files (jpg) at the same time, selecting them and using the File-Open option. Problem is, that option now only works with up to 15 files; it disappears with 16 or more. Same with the "Open With" option. This was not a problem with XP. Does anyone know if there is a setting to change this limit?

Everything was working beautifully, I was very happy that it all went well and I had no major problems getting set up. Then out of the blue, nothing was going on, I went to the START menu and as soon as I touched the Start button it crashed into blue screen.

i m using vista home premium 32 sp2. Machine! Hp Dv6 Core 2 duo 2.10GHZ -3 GB RAM- 512MB AtI Gaming card. I have got major problems. The last couple days I have been getting the following message when I right click on icons on my desktop or click on quick launch icons: Windows explorer has stopped working. It gives me the option to restart or search online for a solution. either one causes the icons in the system tray to go away and then reappear. this doesn't happen when i right click on folders on the desktop but any icons for applications it will. Also any icons in those folders will do the same thing. I have virus scanned with nothing found. I am currently scanning with adaware although i don't think it will find anything either. I have downloaded a few programs recently to convert portions of a dvd to mpeg for a class I'm taking but nothing else out of the ordinary.

Along with that I also got a COM surrogate error this morning when I tried to extact a file. I have no idea whats going on, I called Gateway support, and they are sending me a wipe disc but I'd prefer to just fix this.

I think it is since then that the Media Player stopped functioning properly. Now I can play WMV/MP3 etc but not AVI. I've removed PowerDVD now; reinstalled DivX pack; reinstalled XVid codecs. About 2 weeks ago it starting rebooting sometimes when I open something like an image file or even Internet Explorer. It doesn't happen evey time and only happens about once a day (but only when I go to open something). I want to figure this out so that I don't lose any data or end up with some data corruption. I have run the Windows memory diagnostic tool and it didn't find any issues. The only event in the Event viewer that even related to the issue, was an event logged after it finished rebooting that stated the PC was shutdown improperly.
