Open A Folder, Automatically Displayed By Large Icons?
Aug 30, 2008When you open a folder, all the items in it are displayed by list. Is it possible to make it so that they are automatically displayed by Large Icons instead? Or am I stuck with always having to right-cick then change it everytime I open a new folder?

When I open a folder I see the views set to the extra large icons. I have to set them back and when I open a new folder the icons there are extra large as well. How do I solve this problem?

Sep 5, 2009I am knowledgeable about XP and have used VISTA ultimate for months now but I have found a problem I cant figure out involving the "Document" folder and files under the "Owner" user. Up to to a few weeks ago I did have the document folder under the user "OWNER" encrypted using Vista encryption option and as expected it would show up as blue file names and could be open and saved under "owner". Now when ever I open up any of the edit programs ( Word, Notepad ) it doesn't show that there is a document folder. If I save a file it goes some were never to be found again. When I look for the document folder ( C: userowner ) All the folders are there Except the document folder. I check under the DOS prompt and it cant see it there. When I try and create a document folder it says that it already exist.

Oct 16, 2009After reinstalling Vista, I noticed that the taskbar icons were no longer displayed as large icons. I believe there used to be an option available to display large icons. I haven't been able to figure out how to make the icons and buttons on the taskbar larger.
FYI, I am running Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, with all Microsoft updates applied.
Choose Large Icons Reopen Its Back Same View
May 6, 2008I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer. This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead. Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying.

Nov 26, 2009I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

It used to be (in XP) that if you opened, say, My Computer, and pressed ctrl+h, you would see all the files you had looked at using windows explorer. Now, the internet explorer history works perfectly fine, but for the life of me I cannot find this file history on vista.

Mar 26, 2008I recently ordered 500 Vista desktops and 150 Vista laptops from a vendor preloaded with a RTM edition of Vista Business. When we started loading Office 2007 this week, the Windows Installer stopped four times with errors. Vista gave a message saying we should upgrade to the retail version of Vista (I wish I could send a screenshot). After checking the build level we saw it was build 6000. My team checked some MSDN blogs and saw build 6000 is not viewed as a genuine Vista build. What do I do?! If this is the case, I'm not going to be able to meet my SLA with my Enterprise users.

Jan 8, 2009I've been away from the computer for the past three weeks, and when I got home I discovered everything in perfect working order. Everything, that is, except for my User Folder. None of the subfolders (Music, Videos, Pictures, etc.) have text beneath the icons. This only happens if I have the folder in icon view, no matter the size. List, Details, and Tiles all show the appropriate information, but the names of the folders disappear as soon as I slide the view to Small Icons.
This is true for anything else in the User Folder. For example, I tried moving a file there from the desktop, only to have that file's name disappear. Removing it back to the desktop confirmed that the file still had its original title. Creating a new file in the folder yields the same result. The subfolders themselves still have their names, and I can see them if click "Rename" on any of the folders.
Folder Icons Constantly Changing
Dec 10, 2009I have a folder for all of my music and then subfolders for each type (country, random, etc).
When I go into one of the subfolders, my music is always listed in details.
I dont want it to, so I change it to view small icons.
If I then close the folder for several hours or even shut down/reboot, it goes back to the details.
I have since figured out how to change this by customizing the main folder, but it is now showing them in LARGE icons, which is just as annoying and keeps changing them back to large ones even after I switch it to small ones.
Restore Default User Folder Icons
Mar 12, 2009(i'm running vista 32bit SP1, i hope its not too out of place to ask a question in a 64bit forum)
this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
After Removing The Shortcut Icons Games Not Run From Folder
Apr 2, 2008So I recently (using one of the walkthroughs on this site) was able to manually remove the shortcut arrow, it worked great, but I think I may have screwed something up along the way. I use the Games folder to get to my games quickly, but after messing with removing the shortcut icons, games will no longer run from in the folder. I receive the following error when I try to load a game from the folder: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. The only problem, these are shortcuts, there is no program associated with shortcuts, is there? Anyway can anyone tell me how to make the folder work right. All other shortcuts outside of that folder work fine, and all the shortcuts go to the right place, and if I load the shortcut from the AppData GameExplorer folder it works fine.

Invisible Emails In Folders
Mar 23, 2008I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and migrated my old Outlook Express folders and emails as per the Help instructions. All appeared well as all the old folders appear in Windows Mail. However there appear to be NO emails in any of the folders. What is also strange is that some of these apparently empty folders appear in bold displaying the number of unread emails in the folder. Presumably some indexing fault has occurred - repeated attempts at importing have failed.

Jun 22, 2008Dirve 0: Primary Partition for current XP, another Primary Partition for a new install of Vista Drive 1: The data drive. I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)
I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.

May 12, 2009A Vista SP1 Home Premium problem - 9 live icons covering 9 dead icons: Several days ago I had a desktop with 9 live, working icons at the bottom of the desktop. ie: recycle bin, computer, network, control panel, etc. The 9th icon was a folder called 'powershell'.
Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........
