Links Folder Can't Remove

Mar 30, 2008

I love the 'Recent Places' link in the common file dialogs in Vista. I'd really like to add it to the 'Favorite Links' list in windows explorer.20 The following three links are added programmatically to all common file dialog boxes:=20
. Desktop=20
. Recent places=20
. Computer=20

These three links are not .Ink files in the Links folder. Therefore, the links cannot be removed from the Favorite Links list in common file dialog boxes. Additionally, these three links do not appear in Windows Explorer. This is a huge dissapointment, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is there some registry hack or other technique that will effectively add 'Recent places' to explorer's favorites list?

Shortcut Manager: Remove Arrows In Icons In Vista?

Jul 4, 2009

The arrows in the icons in Vista are annoying me. After a bit of googling, I've found out that a utility called 'Vista Shortcut Manager' can be used to remove those arrows without any manual registry editing. Thing is I can find only the x86 version of the software but I'm using the Vista x64.

After Removing The Shortcut Icons Games Not Run From Folder

Apr 2, 2008

So I recently (using one of the walkthroughs on this site) was able to manually remove the shortcut arrow, it worked great, but I think I may have screwed something up along the way. I use the Games folder to get to my games quickly, but after messing with removing the shortcut icons, games will no longer run from in the folder. I receive the following error when I try to load a game from the folder: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.

Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. The only problem, these are shortcuts, there is no program associated with shortcuts, is there? Anyway can anyone tell me how to make the folder work right. All other shortcuts outside of that folder work fine, and all the shortcuts go to the right place, and if I load the shortcut from the AppData GameExplorer folder it works fine.

Favorite Links Eats My Entire Folders

May 23, 2008

I'm super-new at this forum, but after searching around, I found posts from someone that had a very similar problem to mine, so I thought I'd try my luck too, and see if anyone knows how to fix this. My problem is that I accidentally deleted my -C:Users......Links- folder earlier, and then everything under "Favorite Links" in folder view disappeared. I found a way to re-create it by doing a -RUN>shell:links- command. This did the trick, but now, when I drag a folder onto the Favorite Links, the folder itself is moved into -C:Users......Links,- and not just a shortcut to the folder. When I drag a folder onto Favorite Links, I want a shortcut to that folder appear -- I don't want the whole folder to move into -C:Users......Links. I'm sorry if it's hard to understand this; my English isn't very good.If someone has any idea how to fix this problem (can it be done in the registry, perhaps?), I would be very happy if you could post here

Fixing The LINKS Shortcut In 32bit

Aug 17, 2009

#1 - Links points to My Pictures Location

I unwittingly set my Links shortcut to point to the same folder as My Pictures and for some reason I cannot undo it. If I open my Links, instead of just showing my shortcut, it also shows the folders in My Pictures. Although not crucial to ops, it is rather annoying to see duplicates on my folders in My Pictures.

I found the tutorial on resetting Personal Folders useful but it did not have anything on fixing this type of "merge." The registry entry for Links is just "&Links" which tell me nothing much.

Using regedit, I have managed to fix my personal folder including My Pictures. Only this Links problem persists.

#2 - Wrong icon for C:UsersMy_Name

Second problem --

When I go to the C:Users folders, instead of seeing the folder with my log-on name, I see the folder called DOCUMENTS.

I checked the registry entry for Personal and it points to the correct folder in an E: drive.

How To Remove Briefcase Links

May 12, 2008

I have a Windows Briefcase on my Windows Vista Desktop. I used to use it to back up some files through my home network. I have a better back up approach and want to remove the Briefcase functionality from the folder while keeping the folder intact. I recall that in Windows XP there was a Synchroize item on the menu in Windows Explorer and one of the options would let you break the synchronization. I can't find a way in Vista to do it.

Deleting Some Shortcut Icons?

Feb 17, 2009

I want to clean up my desktop by deleting some shortcut icons. Each of the icons contains the directional arrow in the lower left corner. However, when I "right click, delete" on any Shortcut Icon, I am prompted: Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin? I actually deleted several programs before realizing what I was doing. The wording I was accustomed to in WinXP: Are you sure you want to remove this shortcut ...* isn't offered to me. I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1

Links Folder Got Moved

Mar 15, 2009

Somehow, my Links folder (the one that contains the "favorite links" in the left panel of an explorer window) got moved into my Pictures folder --> C:Users(my name)PicturesLinks. This must have happened quite some time ago... I think it should be located here: C:Users(my name)Links - correct? If I right click and go into properties, the location tab allows me to move this folder. I get two messages - one asking me if I really want to move the folder and its contents (it's just some shortcuts), and the second if I want to direct the Links folder into another system folder "Profile" located at C:Users(my name). It also says if I proceed with the redirection I will not be able to separate them or restore the default location... I don't quite get what that means...

Icons/Files From User Folder Showing Up In Computer Folder

Nov 26, 2009

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

Remove Text From Desktop Icons

Removing the text below an icon on your desktop has been a classic Windows tweak for years.  In Windows Vista, the same old tweak works.

Right click on the icon and select Rename.

Then hold down the ALT key and type in 255 on your right keypad. If you are on a laptop turn on numlock and use the K and I keys to enter in 255. This is the code for a space.....

Create Symbolic Links & Directory Junctions (hard & Soft File System Links)

Feb 14, 2007

Windows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system.  This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer.  Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location.  For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....

User Folder Shortcut Name Change

Jan 4, 2008

I accidentally changed my user folder shortcut name in Windows Explorer under Desktop.

It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.

I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.

I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).

There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.

I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry?

Create A Shortcut Of The Music Folder By Dragging It

May 4, 2008

I've just tried to create a shortcut of the Music folder by dragging it to the desktop, but instead vista places a duplicate (not a copy or a shortcut) of the folder to the desktop. It gets better, i then decided to delete what i thought was the music folder shortcut located on the desktop and hastily clicked the yes
button to trash it. I'm assuming the file names were too big for the bin, and lost over 1300 songs! I'm just after some answers as to why vista does this? Just FYI, the right way to get it off your desktop is to drag it back to it's default folder.

Links Button Looks Like Chain Links
