I'm using Vista SP1. Okay, now to the question: Windows explorer in Vista has a "Favorite Links" panel at the top left. I currently don't see the need for it, and would like to make it go away, so that the folder tree has more space. How do I do that?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI love the 'Recent Places' link in the common file dialogs in Vista. I'd really like to add it to the 'Favorite Links' list in windows explorer.20 The following three links are added programmatically to all common file dialog boxes:=20
. Desktop=20
. Recent places=20
. Computer=20
These three links are not .Ink files in the Links folder. Therefore, the links cannot be removed from the Favorite Links list in common file dialog boxes. Additionally, these three links do not appear in Windows Explorer. This is a huge dissapointment, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is there some registry hack or other technique that will effectively add 'Recent places' to explorer's favorites list?
I have a Windows Briefcase on my Windows Vista Desktop. I used to use it to back up some files through my home network. I have a better back up approach and want to remove the Briefcase functionality from the folder while keeping the folder intact. I recall that in Windows XP there was a Synchroize item on the menu in Windows Explorer and one of the options would let you break the synchronization. I can't find a way in Vista to do it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have this site whose link is Given that I use it quite frequently I would like it to appear as a button on one of the toolbars but the best I could do was add it to Favorites or to the Links drop down menu which to me is no different than Favorites because you still got to go through a drop down menu. I tried resizing the Links part of the toolbar so that it would be wider so that the links on the menu would actually show up as buttons on the toolbar but I could not drag it and I don't think it's possible. Anyone know how to add a link to internet explorer as a quick always visiable one-click button whose icon is the favicon for the site?

This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer. Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location. For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....

I'm a member of a messageboard and, as such, I receive emails detailing when a reply has been posted. which directs the browser to open the page at the specific post. However, when the link arrives at the browser (I've tried this in both IE7 and firefox with the same result), which just dumps me at the top of a (sometimes very long) page. It happens with any link containing the hash symbol. Moving the hash around in the address results in the link being truncated at the point where the hash is.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
cannot get links to open in windows mail. some are public mail such as nascar, and, some are orivate emails from friends, when i defaults, it says 2 out of 3 are working. i have to keep resetting default.

which does nothing usefull
(empty log and no solution to the problem).
I have tried to reinstall but then it complains it is already installed.Is there a way to fix this problem without having to reinstall windows vista which in my case would mean

I am having a problem using POP3 and SMTP set up. Some times I need to use a website email t respond but getting too may error messages and unable to remove those as well. I prefer using my regular email gerdabrook@att.net I am familiar with but cannot with a website response email.
