In the right hand pane of Windows Explorer I am now getting "summary" descriptions in the right side pane. For example, when I am looking at the Desktop, it has gathered the files as "A - H" and "I - P", etc. I am using "classic Windows" folders. How can I shut off the
summary/group description?
I want to know if it is possible to get a preview pane on window explorer. I'm using Windows Vista Basic.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Does anyone have a solution? I do not use the documents folder nor the desktop for data storage. My data is always on another hard drive and I an extra internal and several external hard drives. Everytime I open explorer, the folder list shows with Documents expanded. I have to minimize that, then scroll up and minimum my user name folder, then maximize the Computer folder. That is what I want to see when I open explorer.
It is possible to save that setting. I have seen a lot of posts on folder view, but I am not sure if anyone actually talks about the left half of this view setting. Why is My computer now part of the desktop and sub of user? Already in XP I hated that the C drive always opened explanded.
PreviewConfig is a very useful utility written by Microsoft MVP Ramesh Srinivasan that allows users to easily register file types with the Windows Explorer file preview pane.
Start PreviewConfig and you can view all of the currently registered preview filters on your system for the different file types. Adding a new file type to register a preview for is as easy as just typing in the extension and then selecting the type of viewer.
PreviewConfig works great for text based files that windows does not recgonize by default. For example, .NFO or programming language files such as .vb or .cs.....
I don't know why this happened, but for some reason whenever I single click on a file the preview pane no longer generates a preview of the file. For files that a preview cannot be generated it still gives me the "no preview available" message, but for files that a preview should be present the preview pane just goes blank.
The most common files I use the preview pane for are .txt, .doc, .wmv, and other image files. Strangely enough, images still show in the pane, but I have had no luck with other files. My default program for videos is still Windows Media Player 11 and my default .txt program is Wordpad [I use Word for .doc]. Is there a way to simply reset this feature or could someone
My system is a Vista Ultimate 64-bit with 12 Gb installed physical memory,
however, on the system summary under system information it only shows 3.99 Gb of TOTAL Physical memory.
Why is vista not able to recognize the full 12 Gb ? I thought the 64-bit OS was supposed to recognize up to 128 Gb. Any ideas???

My Explorer taskbar says Hello WORLD I AM VB. How can I remove it.? I tried the rgpedit but it does not work. My history in the task bar is also being erased every time I close internet explorer. It is available but most all files don't present a "summary" tab as was available in XP. In Vista SP1 how does one access the function to save a comment about the file .- I copied most of my files from the old desktop where most/many had the comments even *.pdf files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what I have done but the left hand pane in which shows the list of folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc) in windows mail has completely disappeared.
I have tried rebooting, I have tried going into layout and making sure the folder list is checked but it will just not come back. They folders are still there as I can get to them through the folder bar option. If I uncheck the folders list box the folder bar shows a drop done menu with the folders.
I have a habit to see the date of delete of the files in recycle bin before i permanently erase them. Each time i open the recycle bin folder, the right pane view is always in Tiles mode, even i have changed it to Details mode. Vista has totally no memory about this. That is not something very difficult but i do not know why xp can do it, but vista cant !
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I launch MY Computer, the navigation pane on the left "USED TO" display a Favorites List. It has now disappeared! When I right click on the pane and select, "Restore Default Favorite Links" nothing happens. Also, when I try to drag and drop and "create shortcut here" nothing happens. The pane is listed as EMPTY. The My Favorite Links folder is still on my C: drive with all my favorite shortcuts in it. :confused:... Has anyone else run into this little Vista annoyance and found a solution?

Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have experienced two instances were Add/Remove in Vista does not remove all the software, so that comprehensive installation of similar software is not possible. The first concerned a Scanner, where Add/Remove would not remove all the software, so that installation of the new Scanner is not possible, until a procedure recommended by the Scanner's makers involving modifications to the Registry is carried out, which I could not possibly do myself, so it means hiring a Professional to do the job!
The second concerns Spellex. Here again the old version has not been removed, so that installation of the latest version is not fully carried out, making the software useless. How can Microsoft produce Windows where such problems occur? What is the experience of others in case this is a fault with my computer?
When I open any one of my folders is there a way to NOT have the contents of the first e-mail listed displayed in the Preview Pane automatically? I know that if I click to the far right of the e-mail list the Preview Pane will be empty and a message will show that says "There is no message selected." Ultimately this is what I would like to see when I open any of my folders.

Above picture isn't mine, due to my print screen not working, but I have near all of the right panes contents off (via Start Menu Properties), thus why I'm wanting to put my own custom shortcuts there.
The pic is fairly self-explanatory, but as you can see on the left hand side in the folders pane, there is 2 of nearly every folder.

In order to navigate to my other folders, I have to click on Local Folders, when they are displayed in the message pane. The problem I see is that Vista shows the very 1st second of video, while Windows 7 shows the 4th. That's why many of the video previews on the details pane show a black screen on vista instead of actual video.
Earlier I was told with preview pane viewing on you could receive a virus or whatever, without acually opening the mail message. Is this still the case?

I have now subscribed to 10 newsgroups, and am finding it harder to find the few I usually go to, compared to the ones that I only go to once or twice, whenever I have a rare question. Is there a way I can manually change the order in which they appear (in the left pane--I see "Local Folders" and "Microsoft Communities" as the two major sections)? It looks like Windows Main arranges them in alphabetical order. Is there any way I can drag-n-drop, or change them in any other way?
