I want to be able to keep the search pane in 'My Documents' or other folders in view all the time instead of having to keep going to 'Layout' and selecting it each time I want to use it.

Each time i open the recycle bin folder, the right pane view is always in Tiles mode, even i have changed it to Details mode. Vista has totally no memory about this. That is not something very difficult but i do not know why xp can do it, but vista cant !

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe Search item has disappeared from the right pane of my Startup Menu. I have no idea how I lost it, but it was there when I first got my computer (Vaio, running Vista Home Premium). I now have to go to Help & Support to get access to it. I use the Advanced Search facility, so I can't just open up any folder. Does anyone know how to pin it back onto the Start Menu? I've even tried going to Open Taskbar & Start Menu properties and selecting Use Default Settings on the Start tab - no luck!
View 7 Replies View Relatedexcept for a few grand issues like Search failing with special/technical searches rather than simple filename search, 85% of this OS is now great. I love it now. And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.
Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.
It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........
Ive ran all the usual virus and malware checks and all is clear. Ive checked Event Viewer I see an error every 2 minutes or so. Error message with red exclamation is: 'The Windows Search Service has failed to create the SystemIndex search index. Internal error 1, 0x800700b7, Failed to add Gather Application: Windows>.'' After this warning icon shows error message: 'The Windows Search Service is attempting to remove the old catalog.' Next another warning icon shows message:..........
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got an apparently "broken" search installation. So that I can skip through the normal "click the folder you want to index" type of answers, it's way beyond that. Let me give some background first. This is a new installation of Vista x64 Ultimate on this machine. I just installed it a little over a week ago after I got a blue screen of death that wouldn't allow any type of system restore, etc on the prior install. My prior installation on that machine was a Vista Ultimate x32 bit. The prior installation had the OS on the C: drive and I had moved "My Documents" out of a Windows XP onto the D: drive (D:My DOcuments).
In that prior installation, I left all Music, Videos, documents etc. under the original layout and just pointed the Vista "music", "documents", etc folders to the sub folders. I had no problem indexing on my prior version. I have a Vista 64 bit Ultimate at work as well and IT has no problem indexing even under the default locations..........
The new interface in Office 2007 has a great new look but finding your favorite feature can be a little difficult at first. Microsoft Office Labs offers a helpful utility called Search Commands that brings search to the ribbon. Can’t find a specific feature? Just search for it! ....

It sucked up 70 MB of ram with its 4 processes, Its a pile of crap like all vista inspired software.. after living on 2 of my computers for 2 days I removed it .. (I had tried the previous version too and didnt like that one either.)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what I have done but the left hand pane in which shows the list of folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc) in windows mail has completely disappeared.
I have tried rebooting, I have tried going into layout and making sure the folder list is checked but it will just not come back. They folders are still there as I can get to them through the folder bar option. If I uncheck the folders list box the folder bar shows a drop done menu with the folders.
When I launch MY Computer, the navigation pane on the left "USED TO" display a Favorites List. It has now disappeared! When I right click on the pane and select, "Restore Default Favorite Links" nothing happens. Also, when I try to drag and drop and "create shortcut here" nothing happens. The pane is listed as EMPTY. The My Favorite Links folder is still on my C: drive with all my favorite shortcuts in it. :confused:... Has anyone else run into this little Vista annoyance and found a solution?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 2 Hard Drives - 1 for OS the other for Data. Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.

I know that if I click to the far right of the e-mail list the Preview Pane will be empty and a message will show that says "There is no message selected." Above picture isn't mine, due to my print screen not working, but I have near all of the right panes contents off (via Start Menu Properties), thus why I'm wanting to put my own custom shortcuts there.
The pic is fairly self-explanatory, but as you can see on the left hand side in the folders pane, there is 2 of nearly every folder.

In order to navigate to my other folders, I have to click on Local Folders, when they are displayed in the message pane. I can then open any folder but cannot transfer files to the folder from the inbox.

The problem I see is that Vista shows the very 1st second of video, while Windows 7 shows the 4th. That's why many of the video previews on the details pane show a black screen on vista instead of actual video.
Earlier I was told with preview pane viewing on you could receive a virus or whatever, without acually opening the mail message. Is this still the case?

I have now subscribed to 10 newsgroups, and am finding it harder to find the few I usually go to, compared to the ones that I only go to once or twice, whenever I have a rare question. Is there a way I can manually change the order in which they appear (in the left pane--I see "Local Folders" and "Microsoft Communities" as the two major sections)? It looks like Windows Main arranges them in alphabetical order. Is there any way I can drag-n-drop, or change them in any other way?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Does anyone have a solution? In the right hand pane of Windows Explorer I am now getting "summary" descriptions in the right side pane. For example, when I am looking at the Desktop, it has gathered the files as "A - H" and "I - P", etc. I am using "classic Windows" folders. How can I shut off the
summary/group description?
I do not use the documents folder nor the desktop for data storage. My data is always on another hard drive and I an extra internal and several external hard drives. Everytime I open explorer, the folder list shows with Documents expanded. I have to minimize that, then scroll up and minimum my user name folder, then maximize the Computer folder. That is what I want to see when I open explorer.
It is possible to save that setting. I have seen a lot of posts on folder view, but I am not sure if anyone actually talks about the left half of this view setting. Why is My computer now part of the desktop and sub of user? Already in XP I hated that the C drive always opened explanded.
There should be a feature to add additional information or a solution to a Problem Report that's been submitted.
