I am trying to edit my "All Users" Start Menu. I can create a folder so that when I click the Start Menu, it shows. But the folder will not open to show the shortcuts in it. If I right-click, explore, the shortcut is there, but I am unable to access it the conventional way. Is there sometihing I am missing?
View 3 RepliesIm running Vista Home Prem. 64, Im trying to get two applications of mine to open with Admin rights when going through a shortcut. I'm going to the actual file within Program Files/Application/exe. and right clicking it to bring up the Properties. Now within the Properties / Compatibiliy... I see the option checkbox for "Run this Program as an Administrator", but it appears greyed out. How do I get this option to become active, so I do not have to right click and select "Run as Admin" everytime I want to open the application? I am the admin for the computer, it is just my home computer, built and installed by myself.

To bring gadgets to the front using a keyboard shortcut Press the Windows Logo key +SPACEBAR. I have also read the same thing throughout the web which comfirms that this is the right keyboard shortcut.
I have all the information that tells me how to open windows sidebar using a keyboard shortcut the problem is nothing happens when I do it. I went to my other computer running vista and as soon as I did the shortcut windows sidebar popped right up. The computer I am using is about 1 week old, the first thing I did was update it so it should be fully updated and I can confirm right now it has SP2 and windows update says there are no updates available (which is surprising since vista seems to have hourly updates). There is nothing wrong with the windows key or space bar key as they both work independently and for other shortcut combinations.
Back in Windows XP if you were not on a domain CTRL + ALT +DEL would open up Task Manager. In Windows Vista that key combination opens the secure desktop that allows you to do many more thing. To directly to Task Manager, hit CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.

It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.
I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.
I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).
There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.
I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry?
I assigned a shortcut key to a shortcut, but it always stop working after I restart the computer. I have to keep changing the key in order for it to work again.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just tried to create a shortcut of the Music folder by dragging it to the desktop, but instead vista places a duplicate (not a copy or a shortcut) of the folder to the desktop. It gets better, i then decided to delete what i thought was the music folder shortcut located on the desktop and hastily clicked the yes
button to trash it. I'm assuming the file names were too big for the bin, and lost over 1300 songs! I'm just after some answers as to why vista does this? Just FYI, the right way to get it off your desktop is to drag it back to it's default folder.
So I recently (using one of the walkthroughs on this site) was able to manually remove the shortcut arrow, it worked great, but I think I may have screwed something up along the way. I use the Games folder to get to my games quickly, but after messing with removing the shortcut icons, games will no longer run from in the folder. I receive the following error when I try to load a game from the folder: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set Associations control panel. The only problem, these are shortcuts, there is no program associated with shortcuts, is there? Anyway can anyone tell me how to make the folder work right. All other shortcuts outside of that folder work fine, and all the shortcuts go to the right place, and if I load the shortcut from the AppData GameExplorer folder it works fine.
Is there anyway to remove the arrow in shortcut icons WITHOUT screwing over the favorite links folder?

The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.

Whenever I browse through folders on my hd via an application like Photoshop or Internet Explorer, that application will lock up when I get into Documents. Whenever I make a 'New Folder' the folder icon does not show up and its this weird white thing. Almost all folders in Windows Explorer look like this and it's extremely annoying.

Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. This folder is the Windows Error Reporting queue. I have been having some trouble with Windows Update and a few other Vista things, but my problems can't be so interesting that it takes 16 GB to describe them. I only found it with a freeware program called WinDirStat. Explorer didn't show it in any folder. I just deleted it all and so far so good. When I plug it into my laptop, I can not figure out how to change the view of it so I can just put one "picture" on the folder. I need to know what is in each folder by looking at one picture on the icon and for the life of me, I can not get it to work. I right click, go to customize and choose file. I pick what I want on there and then click apply and it does not work. I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I can get it to work on something that is internal but not the external.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a folder with about 142 gigs of files in it and when I open it up, it takes sometimes 15 sec. before anything shows in the folder, while the little strip across the top of the folder does its "Progress" thing. Yes, I have Indexing on for that partition (this is a partition of my main hard drive; it is a 566g partition used only for archiving and it has 126gigs left).
What strikes me as particularly stupid about this is that it does the "progress" thing EVERY time, even if I close it and open it again 10 seconds later, it does not "remember" the indexing or whatever it just did! Is there any way to fix this? Seems absolutely ridiculous to have a super fast computer that can't find files in a folder without waiting 15 seconds!
I downloaded some pictures from digital camera this morning and saved them on my desktop as I always do. Viewed the pictures & all was ok. Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
to avoid having to right click on taskbar and choose from shortcut menu? I'd like to have a shortcut sitting in the Quick Launch toolbar for that feature.

Since a few days I'm having a weird problem with Vista. Whenever I try to open my documents folder through the start menu (or anywhere else for that matter) the window closes. Also, some links in the start menu seem to be broken. I can go to the documents folder through browsing c:/users/my name but not directly if you know what I mean. This is quite annoying since I can no longer use 'save' in most of the programs I use (photoshop, premiere). When I choose 'save' it is targeted towards going to the documents folder first but it fails and the window closes again.

The option is checked in the folders option area, but no luck. Even tried numerous registry entries with no luck as well. However, something strange has happened so I now cannot open my Itunes folder, and when I click on the "My Music" folder there is NOTHING--all of the tabs that had previously been there are gone, and it just has the general tab with o bytes. My music is still on the computer (I can find it under my name...music) but I cannot figure out how to restore the link from the "My Music" to this.
