View 4 RepliesI have Vista Ultimate 64-bit on a new computer, and Windows 2000/pro on a much older (8 years?) computer. I have no difficulty transferring files from one to the other using flash memory units. Both systems are running fine. I was told, by a not always reliable person, that I can simply plug either a regular ethernet cable, or a crossover ethernet cable, into each computer and each will immediately recognize the other, and each will show up on the other's Window Explorer windows. Then, I'm told, I could drag and drop files from one computer to the other with a click of a mouse on either computer.
So, I tried it. Purchased a new crossover ethernet cable, plugged it in, and no visible response. No sparks, no smoke - nothing. Directory trees did not change on either computer's screen. The person who told me this would work doesn't "have time to check into it right now."
1. Is it likely that I caused any damage to either computer? Both continue to work as well as they ever did, so I don't think so.
2. Is it possible to connect the two computers together, via such an ethernet cable, and have them behave as I had been told?
3. If the answer to question 2 is yes, what else must I do besides plug in the cable?
I haven't used Windows mail (only used to read news groups) in some time, when I went to use it this morning I received this error message; Folder could not be opened Windows mail could not open this folder. The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I open the cookies folder, a message says "This folder is empty." The same goes for the Recent folder, Startup folder, and others. What gives? I am the only user of the computer, and have full administrative access (as far as I know). This problem began after I recently downloaded SP2 for Vista Home Premium.

Why can't i edit these.
Since a few days I'm having a weird problem with Vista. Whenever I try to open my documents folder through the start menu (or anywhere else for that matter) the window closes. Also, some links in the start menu seem to be broken. I can go to the documents folder through browsing c:/users/my name but not directly if you know what I mean. This is quite annoying since I can no longer use 'save' in most of the programs I use (photoshop, premiere). When I choose 'save' it is targeted towards going to the documents folder first but it fails and the window closes again.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi can't get my vista machine to open a folder in the same window. Since about 3 days ago, my folders open up in their own windows and to my knowledge, nothing has changed. The option is checked in the folders option area, but no luck. Even tried numerous registry entries with no luck as well. From what i've heard, this was an old vista bug from pre-sp1 days, but i can't seem to find a fix if any.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to change my destination location for the "My Music" folder to be an external hard drive, since I am a professional musician and my music takes up a great deal of space. However, something strange has happened so I now cannot open my Itunes folder, and when I click on the "My Music" folder there is NOTHING--all of the tabs that had previously been there are gone, and it just has the general tab with o bytes. My music is still on the computer (I can find it under my name...music) but I cannot figure out how to restore the link from the "My Music" to this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn Windows Mail (I am running 32-bit Vista) every few hours when I go to open a new folder a message appears where the message thread is usually shown which says that the message can't be shown because of low disk space and system memory. It does not appear to be because of a stuck email, as there are no emails in the Outbox and everything sends OK. Also, it happens when I click on random folders, from being in an existing folder.
For example, I may be in my inbox and want to check sent messages, so I'll click on the sent folder and then all messages will be hidden in all folders, and I'll just see the message about low disk space etc. If I exit Windows Mail then open it back up, the problem remains, though if I restart the computer it goes back to normal, for a few hours
When open the Windows Explorer, Windows Vista always opens the My Documents folder. Can I set to open other folder, e.g. C:/ ?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI inadvertently said I was using an exchange server and now I am trapped in a never-ending cycle of error messages that will not let me change the server settings to the appropriate pop server. In XP you can go to: Control Panel/Mail/Email Accounts/View or Change Existing accounts, but this option doesn't seem to exist in Vista. Here are the messages I get and the outcomes, I've also attached a couple of screen shots. "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is Unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." At the same time a smaller window is open that says "Configuring Outlook Accounts" The only options presented are to click "X" or "OK" to close the window, once this is done the Microsoft Exchange Window opens with the incorrect server name and account name that I typed in originally. If I try to delete them and click "apply" or "ok" or simply click "X" the following window message appears from Microsoft Outlook:
"Cannot open your default email folders. The file C:/Users/HP/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.ost is not an offline folder file." The options at this point are to click "X" or "Ok" once done the program closes. I have tried uninstalling Office and re-installing, but the Microsoft Exchange Server still remains. I am connected to the internet, all I want to do is change from Exchange Server to pop and supply the necessary pop and smtp information to set-up my email properly. I have been pouring over this for the better part of the day and what's worse is this is for my work email. I am in a remote office, on a laptop, without an IT guy at the moment.
I am trying to edit my "All Users" Start Menu. I can create a folder so that when I click the Start Menu, it shows. But the folder will not open to show the shortcuts in it. If I right-click, explore, the shortcut is there, but I am unable to access it the conventional way. Is there sometihing I am missing?

Im really starting to hate the start menu. If I try to open my personal folder from the start menu, all i get is a white flash and the nothing. If i try to explore it, an all white window opens up with just Desktop as the address. I even tried to go to my documents and access my personal folder by clicking on it in the address but that does nothing.
The only way to get into it is by going to my computer, users, then accessing it from there. If i drag that folder to my start menu and add it to the top (where your internet browser is) it doesnt work. Although I can add a shortcut to it on the desktop and place that in the start menu, which makes having it in the start menu null anyways since the shortcut is on the desktop.
This has been really frustrating, I was able to somewhat fix the problem by placing my users folder in the start menu but I don't really like that as a fix and was wondering if anybody had a real solution to the problem instead.
The actual question regards IE8. I just recently came back to IE8, and I got into the habit of hitting the center mouse button on my daily 3 favorites folders. Each one opens maybe= 6 web pages. The trouble is it opens each page two or more times. ie: If there= were only one page in the folder and I used the center mouse button to open = that single page, it might open that page 2 or 3 times with the single click.
I browsed one page of IE8 bugs, and found nothing on this. So how do I = get it to stop at opening just the single links in each favorite folder only = once ? The title above. This appeared as a price for support. I've bought cars = that cost less. Is anyone actually paying for support from a telemarketer in = India at these prices ? I spent an entire day online with support with someone I could barely
understand, and never got the problem fixed awhile back.
When using Windows Mail, I have a series of folders and sub-folders on the left side. It used to be that the sub-folders were always closed. Now, for some reason, the sub-folders are always open when I open up Windows Mail.
This is regardless of how I exit Windows Mail. In other words, when I'm all done with Windows Mail, I leave it with all sub-folders closed, but the next time when I open and use it again, I find that all the sub-folders are open again.
When you open a folder, all the items in it are displayed by list. Is it possible to make it so that they are automatically displayed by Large Icons instead? Or am I stuck with always having to right-cick then change it everytime I open a new folder?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently have this problem with my windows vista. Each and every files and folders in my C: (Operating System) drive has huge thumbnails. View 5 Replies View RelatedI haven't searched for anything like this so forgive me if something like this has been asked. So when I open a folder including things like documents, control panel, .zip files, the window is black when my cursor is outside it. When i put my cursor inside, different sections of the window show up (like certain icons or the bar at the top), but as i move towards them, it goes away as another section shows. This makes it absolutely impossible for me to select anything in these folders. Programs and internet windows work normally. How do I fix this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, but I didn't do it myself. For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOutlook 2007 installed, and working fine. I needed to open winmail and found that it did not open. Found it running in taskman, but there is no winmail program window available.
I have tried:
1)delete winmail reg entries
2)delete winmail storage folders
3)rename winmail.exe file....
None of the above worked. Specifically, the results of points above:
1)started winmail after deleting reg entries, just remade them,is all.
2)ditto for point 2
3)nothing happens when double click renamed winmail.exe...
I dont want to use another program. I needed to visually advise someone about adding signatures, but winmail did not start. Yes I could do an internet search, but that is not the point-winmail is broken somehow and I wish to fix it.
