Start Menu Personal Folder Does Not Open
Mar 24, 2008
Im really starting to hate the start menu. If I try to open my personal folder from the start menu, all i get is a white flash and the nothing. If i try to explore it, an all white window opens up with just Desktop as the address. I even tried to go to my documents and access my personal folder by clicking on it in the address but that does nothing.
The only way to get into it is by going to my computer, users, then accessing it from there. If i drag that folder to my start menu and add it to the top (where your internet browser is) it doesnt work. Although I can add a shortcut to it on the desktop and place that in the start menu, which makes having it in the start menu null anyways since the shortcut is on the desktop.
This has been really frustrating, I was able to somewhat fix the problem by placing my users folder in the start menu but I don't really like that as a fix and was wondering if anybody had a real solution to the problem instead.

Well I was in the registry editor trying to clean up my context menu a little, and as a result I nolonger have "open" in the context menu for audio and video files only. This means double clicking doesn't open the file. I can however go to "open with" and open it that way.

This is a small thing but still something that bugs me. I was watching one of the Vista demo videos and it seems there is suppose to be a link to the search folder on my start menu. The first time I used the "windows/f" shortcut it brought up google search (google desktop came preinstalled with my computer) so I went to "default" programs and made windows search the default program and now the search folder comes up but I can't find a way to put a link to it on my start menu. I have tried going through the list on the start menu "customize" section but it's not on the list. I have Vist Home Premium if that makes any difference.

When clicking the same program from the start menu -> program folder, it will run. What could be? I am not using the classic menu. I have tried to re-pin them, but still they will not open??, all other programs are ok.

How does my 'Links' folder relate to my start menu (or whatever it's called when I click the start button)? I guess I'm really asking what is the purpose of that folder. Also, how do I get more of the shortcuts that show up in that folder to show up on my start menu?

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to reorganize the programs in my start menu (UAC is off for ease of moving files/folders; I am administrator). I've come across a folder that I can't move or delete. Whenever I try to move it, I get an error that it cannot locate the file (The error message says that the file is no longer located in C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms). Additionally, a right-click menu does not appear for this folder (but it does for everything else in the Start Menu). When I go to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms that folder does appear. However, I cannot delete it or move it. Trying to do so results in a similar "unable to locate folder" message as before. Yet, I can still open the folder, which is empty (hence why I want to delete it).

I have Vista, DSL, and a laptop. If I open Mobility Center with the Start menu there is no "connection tile" there. So in order to connect I have to right-click the taskbar icon, click on "connect to network" in the bubble, go to "Wireless" where I get the error that the "network cannot be found". I have to go through diagnose, repair, and resolution process, then the connection opens. I am currently connected (now using pc for this) and when I just now went to mobility center through the start menu the connection tile was there again -- but when I need it to connect it is never there.
I am confused and new to broadband. When the techie set it up it worked straightforward so I haven't a clue what happened to mess it up. I am not even sure when the connection tile is/isn't supposed to appear in mobility center. I would like to configure it as it should be, so it will connect automatically at bootup when at home, and have the ability to switch the automatic connection on/off when I go out in public. I am savvy enough to fix it if told what I need to do.

I'm running Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition under Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Recently I've been getting the following message when opening Outlook: "The data file 'Personal Folders' was not closed properly. This file is being checked for problems" I then have to wait several minutes while the file is checked before I can start using Outlook. It doesn't happen everytime I start Outlook, but often enough to be irritating. I have tried closing Outlook using the "Exit" option on the "File" menu and also the "X" option, but it doesn't seem to matter which method I use. The "not closed properly" message seems to appear at random. I'm using MS Office Outlook 2003 SP3 and running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Im having some problems with my personal folder. When i go to it all the thumbnails have no information under them: when I go to a folder at a different location it has the information under each large thumbnail: When I go and access my personal folder the "long way" by going to COMPUTER>C DRIVE>USERS>ELENA I can see the information. I have no idea why this happened. I remember I was cutting and pasting things to that folder, but I must have pressed something on my keyboard by accident and the mouse was stuck on select. Then I restarted and this happened. How can I get the text under the large thumbnails to appear again? Going to "View" doesnt work by the way.

The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.

This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...

I stumbled upon vistax64 while researching superfetch in vista and honestly out of all the sites I have been to this one is the most informative and up to date. I found the tutorials section to be a real big help in fact I almost have vista setup just the way I want it because of the guides. I do have a quick question I miss the way XP did its start menu as in hover over a item to go to its menu, vista you have to actually click the menu, anyway to return that to the way it used to be while still keeping the default vista look?

This applies to XP as well as Vista, the solution (if there is one) may also work for both, that's why I decided to crosspost instead of posting a separate question for each OS. Has someone found a way to add new top-level menus to the start menu, the way you could in Win2000, and still can in XP and Vista if you switch to the "classic" start menu?

I have 2 Hard Drives - 1 for OS the other for Data. Since all my data is on disk D I wanted to change the Documents, Music, and Pictires links on the rhs of the start pane to point to the new location. i did that OK by using properties, move location.however I stuffed it up by changing where "Videos" points. "videos is a link under the users on c:. Anyway, I sent it to the wrong place. When I tried to fix it my documents, pictures and music links were all lost. Somehow i've managed to re-establish the Documents link to point to the correct place (on the Data HDD) but I can't change Music or Pictures. They are just empty and do nothing. If I point to them and right click and select properties there is no "Location" tab, and in fact there is nothing at all.The links are OK in "Favourite Links" when Computer window is open, but they are dead on my start panel right hand side. All the other items in that panel are OK. How can I reset those links to point where I want.

I can't seem to find Newsgroups for Windows 7, so I'm hoping to find an answer for my question here! I've installed Win7 on my laptop and want to customize the Start Menu's All Programs windows. I normally consolidate like programs/folders into one common folder to minimize the number of items on the All Program window (i.e. all Microsoft related items in one folder called something like Microsoft Programs). I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Windows 7.

Recently most of the programs in my Start Menu disappeared. Almost everything that disappeared is Microsoft related, like Office. When I rebooted it said that explorer.exe and sprtcmd.exe in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms directory is corrupt and I should run chkdsk. However, chkdsk won't run. I set it to run on reboot but it never does. Then I tried using sfc /scannow but it only got to 71% before saying it can't continue. I tried going into the Programs folder but it says the directory is corrupt or unreadable. I've got Vista Home Premium, and my computer is a Dell XPS M1530.
