Add Search Folder To Start Menu

Mar 28, 2009

This is a small thing but still something that bugs me. I was watching one of the Vista demo videos and it seems there is suppose to be a link to the search folder on my start menu. The first time I used the "windows/f" shortcut it brought up google search (google desktop came preinstalled with my computer) so I went to "default" programs and made windows search the default program and now the search folder comes up but I can't find a way to put a link to it on my start menu. I have tried going through the list on the start menu "customize" section but it's not on the list. I have Vist Home Premium if that makes any difference.

Start Menu Search Text Box

Is there any way to change the default action when a person hits 'Enter' inside the Start Menu's search text box? I would rather "Search the Internet" when I hit Enter rather than having VISTA search my hard drive (index).

Speed Up Start Menu Search

May 14, 2006

When a users enters text in the search box on the start panel Windows automatically searches the file index as well.  The file index includes all of the searchable files on your hard drive and can be quite large.  One way to speed up searching through your start menu applications is to narrow the scope of the search so that it does not include hard drive files.

Prevent Start Menu Searches from searching the File index:

1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).

2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer and finally Advanced.

3. Find and right click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify....

Sp1 Removes Instant Search In Start Menu

Mar 23, 2008

I am REALLY mad to read (winsupersite.com) that Vista Service Pack 1 R E M O V E S the instant search field from the start menu! I use the instant search often, finding it the easiest way find a single file that i'm not certain where lies. And now MS will punish me as a customer by withdrawing one of the useful features of vista (instead of the many useless ones) just because Google complains. Microsoft, shame on you for NOT focusing on delivering a good product to your customers, but continuing with silly stuff like RED or Version N or 8 different kinds of Vista SKU's......

Speed Up Start Menu Search (New Method)

Feb 11, 2007

The search box on the new Start Menu in Windows Vista can be very useful for everyday tasks. This search box is very powerful because not only does it search the start menu and control panel, but it also searches your pictures, documents and even your e-mails. The scope of the search is very wide and you can see some performance benefits if you narrow it down to just searching the start menu and control panel. Follow these steps to optimize your start menu search:

Right click on the start button and select Properties.

Click on the Customize button.

Remove the check from Search Communications....

Search Folder Disappeared From Right Pane Startup Menu

Apr 4, 2008

The Search item has disappeared from the right pane of my Startup Menu. I have no idea how I lost it, but it was there when I first got my computer (Vaio, running Vista Home Premium). I now have to go to Help & Support to get access to it. I use the Advanced Search facility, so I can't just open up any folder. Does anyone know how to pin it back onto the Start Menu? I've even tried going to Open Taskbar & Start Menu properties and selecting Use Default Settings on the Start tab - no luck!

Start Menu Personal Folder Does Not Open

Mar 24, 2008

Im really starting to hate the start menu. If I try to open my personal folder from the start menu, all i get is a white flash and the nothing. If i try to explore it, an all white window opens up with just Desktop as the address. I even tried to go to my documents and access my personal folder by clicking on it in the address but that does nothing.

The only way to get into it is by going to my computer, users, then accessing it from there. If i drag that folder to my start menu and add it to the top (where your internet browser is) it doesnt work. Although I can add a shortcut to it on the desktop and place that in the start menu, which makes having it in the start menu null anyways since the shortcut is on the desktop.

This has been really frustrating, I was able to somewhat fix the problem by placing my users folder in the start menu but I don't really like that as a fix and was wondering if anybody had a real solution to the problem instead.

How Remove Undeletable Folder In Start Menu

Mar 23, 2008

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to reorganize the programs in my start menu (UAC is off for ease of moving files/folders; I am administrator). I've come across a folder that I can't move or delete. Whenever I try to move it, I get an error that it cannot locate the file (The error message says that the file is no longer located in C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms). Additionally, a right-click menu does not appear for this folder (but it does for everything else in the Start Menu). When I go to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms that folder does appear. However, I cannot delete it or move it. Trying to do so results in a similar "unable to locate folder" message as before. Yet, I can still open the folder, which is empty (hence why I want to delete it).

Snipping Tool In The Search Bar In The Windows Menu

Jun 6, 2008

Reading the latest Computer Shopper, one of the tips was using the Vista snipping tool. The article says it is in the accessories folder on the start menu. For the life of me, I can not see it. How do I make it show up?

For Vista users you can just type "Snipping Tool" in the search bar in the windows menu. The first time you run it it will ask if you want to add it to your quick launch bar. I selected yes keeping in mind it is always easier to remove something from it than to add to it.

No Search I Context Menu, No Drag And Drop To Command Prompt

Apr 14, 2009

I was testing Vista for one year and at the end I am going back to the XP. I not interested in appearance. The system should work and I do not care if it have transparent windows or not. It have to be fast and have all function I had in former System (Windows XP in my case) What am I lacking in Vista:

1.No search i context menu
2.No drag and drop to command prompt
3.No folder backup (ntbackup)
4 Eating more than 1GB ram
5 More clicking to get to the same properties

Can any of you tell me why should I stay with Vista? It is your last chance to convinced me.

SP1 Removed The Search Shortcut From The Start Panel

May 29, 2008

I sent the foolowing message to Microsoft - Message: Microsoft removed the Search button from the Start panel for Vista in SP1. This is a great disservice for your users. You may believe the alternate approaches are sufficient, but you are SO VERY WRONG when it comes to the average user. I do not care what your reasons or excuse are, you are still WRONG and it was a thoughtless mistake. You should correct this change immediately with a "fix" or whatever is necessary if you really want to be of service to your users.

You do not need to know the reply because it completely missed the point of the message. Does anyone know how I might be able to restore the Search function to the Staart Panel? I understand there is a way but I do not know it. I also have been told that there is a piece of software that will do the job.

How To Search Cookies Folder?

Jan 10, 2010

Is there any way to search the cookies folder in Vista (or Windows 7)? In Windows XP, I can search a specific folder and use part of the domain/site name to find all cookies from the site (eg. microsoft*). When I try this in Vista though, I never find anything. First of all, typing cookies on the start menu is a blind alley. So, I navigate to the cookies folder, type my search term in the search box and nothing is found. When I click on the Advanced Search link and check the box to include non-indexed, hidden, and system files, it still doesn't find anything. How are people finding anything in Vista?

Freezing Over Start Menu

Nov 2, 2009

This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

No User Name On Start Menu?

May 1, 2009

i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..

just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
