In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft removed the option for the Search button on the right side of the start panel. If you used that button frequently it is possible to bring it back by replacing the Help and Support button....

"To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search." When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What am I missing?

How do I get the Shut Down option to appear first (i.e. how do I get the button to shut the computer down when clicked) and put the low power state in the menu of other options which are accessed when you click the arrow next to the power button?

Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu).

I was watching one of the Vista demo videos and it seems there is suppose to be a link to the search folder on my start menu. The first time I used the "windows/f" shortcut it brought up google search (google desktop came preinstalled with my computer) so I went to "default" programs and made windows search the default program and now the search folder comes up but I can't find a way to put a link to it on my start menu. I have tried going through the list on the start menu "customize" section but it's not on the list. I have Vist Home Premium if that makes any difference.

The file index includes all of the searchable files on your hard drive and can be quite large. One way to speed up searching through your start menu applications is to narrow the scope of the search so that it does not include hard drive files.
Prevent Start Menu Searches from searching the File index:
1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer and finally Advanced.
3. Find and right click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify....
I am REALLY mad to read (winsupersite.com) that Vista Service Pack 1 R E M O V E S the instant search field from the start menu! I use the instant search often, finding it the easiest way find a single file that i'm not certain where lies. And now MS will punish me as a customer by withdrawing one of the useful features of vista (instead of the many useless ones) just because Google complains. Microsoft, shame on you for NOT focusing on delivering a good product to your customers, but continuing with silly stuff like RED or Version N or 8 different kinds of Vista SKU's......

It took me a while to delete this program, but now I've discovered a problem. My Start menu now has missing items, for instance the Games category, no longer shows the games that once were there. I've looked for a restore point, prior to my "friends" intervention, but it does not exist. Is there a way to re-build the Start menu and restore it to it's previous existence?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted the Mail icon from the Start Menu (Vista Ultimate x32) and a ballon came up with the steps to restore this which instantly disappeared. I run Office 2007 with Outlook as the default mail client. I did manage to create the shortcut for Outlook 2007 and drop it on the Start Menu and it works. However, on right click it does not give the three options (E-Mail Accounts; Data Files; Show Profiles) that was part of the standard options. I am able to access these options from the Control Panel (Mail) but would prefer to restore the Start Menu. I did re-install Office suite but it did not change. Is there a way to restore this back?

PM a member to find out. I Havnt tried this personally since I already activated my copy legally, if anyone could try it and report back. But from the peopel who have they say it works.
I recently switched from IE7 to FireFox 3(Should have done it A LOT sooner!!!). I love the program except for one thing. In the Vista Start Menu when I click on my email button it still opens with IE7. Is there a way to fix this so that it uses FireFox instead?

This only puts the pc in sleep mode. I know that if you click on the arrow to the right, that there is the option to shut down. If I try to send a message (including this one) I get "Not Responding" . I have to then close Windows Mail from the Task Manager, reopen Windows Mail and try to send again. View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.
