Power Button In The Start Menu
Apr 13, 2008
When I click Start, I have a yellow power button which, when clicked, puts the computer in a low power mode - I have to click the arrow next to that button to get an option to actually Shut Down. How do I get the Shut Down option to appear first (i.e. how do I get the button to shut the computer down when clicked) and put the low power state in the menu of other options which are accessed when you click the arrow next to the power button?

This laptop was an ex-display model and I wondered if anyone could please tell me how to reinstate the power button to the start up menu. I have Vista Home Premium.

I've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu).

In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft removed the option for the Search button on the right side of the start panel. If you used that button frequently it is possible to bring it back by replacing the Help and Support button....

There are two new power buttons on the Windows Vista start menu that behave differently than in previous versions of Windows. The main button, that looks like a power button actually puts your computer to sleep, not really turning it completely off. The other button locks your computer. I personally do not like putting my computer to sleep. I would rather turn it off completely to save some power and save some money on my electric bill when I am sleeping.
Follow the steps below to customize these button to work how you want them to work:
Click on the Start Menu and type in Power Options and hit Enter .....

Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 item on Searching from Search Folder states the Search Folder (Figure 7-22) can be opened from the Start menu. "To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search." When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What am I missing?

first enable the "Run" button in the start menu in the "Taskbar Properties". here's a work around to Activate Vista Build 5219, 5231, 5270, 5308, (or earlier) and later maybe... Start > Run > msconfig > Permit Folder "Services"
uncheck the "Software Licensing Service"
uncheck the "SL UI Notification Service"
Apply Close Restart Your machine will then tell you, this machine is unlicensed! If this does not work for you there is also a CD Key circulating around which allows you to activate. PM a member to find out. I Havnt tried this personally since I already activated my copy legally, if anyone could try it and report back. But from the peopel who have they say it works.

I was going to get the Antec 900, but I went with the Cooler Master 690.. and I'm very happy that I did.. cuz my brother got the Antec 900 and it's been nothing but a Nightmare, wire management blows, the Power buttons are Ghetto.. So here it is, When you take the top off.. the way the power buttons are attached are very cheaply done, and then they are Hot Glued on with a cheap glue that snaps off very easy.. or it was on his, someone was sleeping on the job with Quality Control..
so, at some point of his build he broke the power button.. it doesn't work. so we've tried to re-attach it.. and it's not workin very well, the entire module is very cheap, he was very careful and personally I think it was broken from the Very beginning... If anyone has an Old Antec 900 case.. or parts to there antec 900.. or anything like that.. Please feel free to PM me. I'm hoping to find the entire top part.. with the top 200mm fan. the power button and reset button and the I/O ports.. The Entire top. if anyone has an old 900 and would like to sell some parts, or make a lil money on there old tower they don't use.

I have a Gateway Tablet PC which originally came with Windows XP Tablet edition. I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium a long time ago (2 years?) and have had no problems, except for the lousy video chip that the laptop has. I decided to upgrade the ram from 1 GB to 2 GB, so went to a reputable online memory seller that has a scanner to tell you what memory to buy. Replaced the two 500MB modules with two 1GB modules. After that, the laptop goes into hybrid sleep/hibernation fine, but when resuming, the HDD light flashes, DVD spins up, etc., but the screen stays blank, and Vista hangs. I have to hold the power button down to switch off and then reboot, with the complaint that it did not shut down correctly.
This was so annoying that I reinstalled the 2 500MB memory modules and the problem went away. But a few weeks later, the slowness and disk thrashing prompted me to try again. So I put the 2GB in again, and bingo, the hang-upon-resume problem reappears. It does boot and run faster with the 2 GB, so I really want to keep it. Things I have tried: Switching off hibernation (both in control panel and with powercfg -h off) Removed ready boost sd card Installed Vista SP2 RTM

I have just bought and installed Premium 64 bit. I noticed that there is a power button to the right of the menu, when you click on the windows icon on the bottom left. This only puts the pc in sleep mode. I know that if you click on the arrow to the right, that there is the option to shut down. My question is this: Can i change the off button that is on the menu, to actally shut down the pc?? Is there an option to do that.

I am having trouble signing into msnews.microsoft.com from the toolbar button and the menu selection under tools. If I try to send a message (including this one) I get "Not Responding" . I have to then close Windows Mail from the Task Manager, reopen Windows Mail and try to send again. Is there some reason the Windows Mail does this even though I have given it my Windows Live ID and password?

I did install the "Vista Start Menu" freeware and it works, but I want the

Every now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.

Is there a way of shutting down or restarting without going via the Start button? I'm guessing that there are command line commands to do it? If so what are they and how do I get a command line prompt on the desktop without going via the start button again?

This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
