View 0 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Everything I've read or
seen about it shows a round start button at the bottom. Mine has an XP-type
start button.
Acer tech support said do a factory restore and the Vista Forum tutorial instructions didn't fix it.
BTW, I have Vista Home Premium X32, if that makes any difference.
I did install the "Vista Start Menu" freeware and it works, but I want the
original Vista Start button back, I got used to it.
I have just done an upgrade from Windows XP to Vista Home premium and i do not have a start button or a taskbar
View 7 Replies View RelatedEvery now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a novice so bear with me. Though I want some programs on my computer, I don't want them to automatically start up and slow down the boot up process. In the bottom right corner, I always have Adobe Downloader, Skype, Kodak Printer Status, Web Cam, etc. that I don't want to start up but want available on my desktop if I ever need them. If I go to Add/Delete programs, that will get rid of the program entirely. I just want to get rid of the automatic start up feature of the program. How can I do this????

View 6 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled a program through the Control Panel -> Programs and Features. This seemed to remove all signs of the application from the C:Program Files folder, but I was left with the application with sub folders on the Start Menu/All Programs. Since I didn't need this anymore, I tried right clicking on it and selected Delete - this resulted in a dialog 'You need to confirm this operation - Continue/Skip/Cancel' - I selected Continue - the dialog box disappears but nothing else happens - the menu entries remained.
Looking through various Vista newsgroups, I found a 'Take Ownership' registry thing - I installed this. Retrying the above and after 'Taking Ownership' of the start menu entry (entries), has exactly the same results - the references to the application still remain.
Next I tried search for the application name and this led me to the folder 'ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms' and I tried Delete there both without then with the Take Ownership - still the same dialog which when clicking Continue results in no action...........
I'm running Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to reorganize the programs in my start menu (UAC is off for ease of moving files/folders; I am administrator). I've come across a folder that I can't move or delete. Whenever I try to move it, I get an error that it cannot locate the file (The error message says that the file is no longer located in C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms). Additionally, a right-click menu does not appear for this folder (but it does for everything else in the Start Menu). When I go to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms that folder does appear. However, I cannot delete it or move it. Trying to do so results in a similar "unable to locate folder" message as before. Yet, I can still open the folder, which is empty (hence why I want to delete it).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running Vista for about a year. At various times I will open something and it seems that there are "boxes" with red x's and a description. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.
first enable the "Run" button in the start menu in the "Taskbar Properties". here's a work around to Activate Vista Build 5219, 5231, 5270, 5308, (or earlier) and later maybe... Start > Run > msconfig > Permit Folder "Services"
uncheck the "Software Licensing Service"
uncheck the "SL UI Notification Service"
Apply Close Restart Your machine will then tell you, this machine is unlicensed! If this does not work for you there is also a CD Key circulating around which allows you to activate. PM a member to find out. I Havnt tried this personally since I already activated my copy legally, if anyone could try it and report back. But from the peopel who have they say it works.
I am using Vista Ultimate 32-bit and I want to add a 'new folder' button to the button bar in my folder view. I do a LOT of file relocation and I make new folders constantly and want a one-click solution. I searched the forums first but found no solution. Thank you in advance for the help. I am NOT looking for a right-click option or a menu add-on. I just want a button.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have experienced two instances were Add/Remove in Vista does not remove all the software, so that comprehensive installation of similar software is not possible. The first concerned a Scanner, where Add/Remove would not remove all the software, so that installation of the new Scanner is not possible, until a procedure recommended by the Scanner's makers involving modifications to the Registry is carried out, which I could not possibly do myself, so it means hiring a Professional to do the job!
The second concerns Spellex. Here again the old version has not been removed, so that installation of the latest version is not fully carried out, making the software useless. How can Microsoft produce Windows where such problems occur? What is the experience of others in case this is a fault with my computer?
Even after shutting-down the PC, Start - Shut-down, a green light in the middle of the PC is still on, although the PC has been shut-down completely. I need to turn-off its light by pulling off power-cable connected with the PC. Does this indicate 'malfunction' light inside the PC?
