Little Red X And A Description: Hit The Start Button And Then "help And Support" I Will Get These X's
Aug 26, 2009
I've been running Vista for about a year. At various times I will open something and it seems that there are "boxes" with red x's and a description. I imagine it is a security thing. Is there someway to shut it off or am I better off leaving it alone. As an example, if I hit the start button and then "help and support" I will get these x's.

I just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Everything I've read or
seen about it shows a round start button at the bottom. Mine has an XP-type
start button.

Acer tech support said do a factory restore and the Vista Forum tutorial instructions didn't fix it.
BTW, I have Vista Home Premium X32, if that makes any difference.
I did install the "Vista Start Menu" freeware and it works, but I want the
original Vista Start button back, I got used to it.

Every now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.

I have windows Vista Home Premium that came installed in my computer. My Vista is not an ugrade and I am having the same "windows is not genuine" problem. I have access to nothing but the internet! No access to my start button or anything else. My computer screen is completely black except for the "windows is not genuine" window that pops up, which allows me to get on the internet.

Is there a way of shutting down or restarting without going via the Start button? I'm guessing that there are command line commands to do it? If so what are they and how do I get a command line prompt on the desktop without going via the start button again?

I am on a laptop and desperate for task bar estate. I know you could do this for XP, but it isn't the same for vista. I want to remove the start button. I would just use the Win Key to open my menu.

When I click Start, I have a yellow power button which, when clicked, puts the computer in a low power mode - I have to click the arrow next to that button to get an option to actually Shut Down. How do I get the Shut Down option to appear first (i.e. how do I get the button to shut the computer down when clicked) and put the low power state in the menu of other options which are accessed when you click the arrow next to the power button?

I've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu).

In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft removed the option for the Search button on the right side of the start panel. Â If you used that button frequently it is possible to bring it back by replacing the Help and Support button....

I am trying to hide "Help and Support" on the Start Menu. I use the "Classic" menu and I am running Vista Home Premium. The “gpedit.msc” feature is not included with Vista Home Premium. It is only available when using Vista Ultimate. I suspect it will require registry tweak but I don’t know how to do it.

Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 item on Searching from Search Folder states the Search Folder (Figure 7-22) can be opened from the Start menu. "To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search." When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What am I missing?

I have been doing this for years in XP and Server 2003, but recently I have been installing Vista x64 Edition for some specific needs. This code is part of a workstation startup script that pulls the description from AD and makes it the local description on the computer. This does not work in Vista x64 or Server 2008 x64 and I have found no explanation on the Internet as of yet. I have not tested in x86 installs of the same OS. Yes, I am running it as administrator while testing, if I do not, I receive Access Denied.
sComputer = "."
Set Obj = GetObject("winmgmts:\" & sComputer &
"
ootcimv2").InstancesOf("Win32_OperatingSystem")
For Each x In Obj
x.Description = "This is the computer description."
x.Put_
Next
The object is being created just fine. I can use other methods on the object successfully like GetText_. I have found no documentation that says Put_ shouldn't work.

that is an accurate description of my computer. my computer crashes, hangs, restarts without warning, games stop working while playing them(this includes freecell and inkball, different sections if vista stop working and restart. 37 of my problem reports are windows related and none have a solution and the ones that it says have a solution don't make difference(i have 3 of these)and relate to graphics card. i would of least thought that a year after it was released there would be only small or minor problems by now. yes i have all updates of all my computer components including optional updates.

first enable the "Run" button in the start menu in the "Taskbar Properties". here's a work around to Activate Vista Build 5219, 5231, 5270, 5308, (or earlier) and later maybe... Start > Run > msconfig > Permit Folder "Services"
uncheck the "Software Licensing Service"
uncheck the "SL UI Notification Service"
Apply Close Restart Your machine will then tell you, this machine is unlicensed! If this does not work for you there is also a CD Key circulating around which allows you to activate. PM a member to find out. I Havnt tried this personally since I already activated my copy legally, if anyone could try it and report back. But from the peopel who have they say it works.

i have only just signed up, so not sure if this is the 100% correct place to post but here goes. I think someone has gained remote access of some kind to my computer, and retrieved a file. Originally based on what i heard through the very thin floor of my room. I.e. i think my housemates got at it and i would like to know for definite as it contains rather sensitive and personal information.
I am not an expert with IT but i will try to explain a little, and will try to answer any further questions to get to the bottom of it. Around 2 months back i noticed a small brown or red icon on my toolbar at the bottom of the screen (perhaps someone might be able to recognise a method from this scrappy description?), this read something along the lines of "connected to -PC",? being the name of a housemate. I terminated the link and confronted them but they deny this. Secondly i have noticed that windows remote access has been enabled, and after some reading up i have found that this is not enabled by default, and as i know very little about software, and know i havent touched it, then this cant be me?
Thirdly i have been looking through the event log, and within the WLAN-Autoconfig i found an Event ID 11004 which reads:Adapter Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter
DeviceGuid {B4FD2D99-F15B-4BAC-A591-180E23218228}.............

I am using Vista Ultimate 32-bit and I want to add a 'new folder' button to the button bar in my folder view. I do a LOT of file relocation and I make new folders constantly and want a one-click solution. I searched the forums first but found no solution. Thank you in advance for the help. I am NOT looking for a right-click option or a menu add-on. I just want a button.

I have just built a new computer using Vista Ultimate x64 and a single GTX 280 on a 790i motherboard. I play Everquest a lot and find that when I try to load it I get a message that no 3D devices found. Going into dxdiag I discover that there are no DirectX features available. I am using nVidia driver 7741. I had to also download directx 9 to run the game. What can I do to get 3D support? My device manager recognizes my card. I'm lost here.
