i dont have a shut down button in the start menu, the only option i have is to log off, or lock my computer, however in the other user accounts on my computer i do have a shut down button next to the lock button.
When I click Start, I have a yellow power button which, when clicked, puts the computer in a low power mode - I have to click the arrow next to that button to get an option to actually Shut Down. How do I get the Shut Down option to appear first (i.e. how do I get the button to shut the computer down when clicked) and put the low power state in the menu of other options which are accessed when you click the arrow next to the power button?
This laptop was an ex-display model and I wondered if anyone could please tell me how to reinstate the power button to the start up menu. I have Vista Home Premium.
I've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu).
In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft removed the option for the Search button on the right side of the start panel. If you used that button frequently it is possible to bring it back by replacing the Help and Support button....
Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 item on Searching from Search Folder states the Search Folder (Figure 7-22) can be opened from the Start menu. "To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search." When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What am I missing?
first enable the "Run" button in the start menu in the "Taskbar Properties". here's a work around to Activate Vista Build 5219, 5231, 5270, 5308, (or earlier) and later maybe... Start > Run > msconfig > Permit Folder "Services"
uncheck the "Software Licensing Service" uncheck the "SL UI Notification Service"
Apply Close Restart Your machine will then tell you, this machine is unlicensed! If this does not work for you there is also a CD Key circulating around which allows you to activate. PM a member to find out. I Havnt tried this personally since I already activated my copy legally, if anyone could try it and report back. But from the peopel who have they say it works.
Even after shutting-down the PC, Start - Shut-down, a green light in the middle of the PC is still on, although the PC has been shut-down completely. I need to turn-off its light by pulling off power-cable connected with the PC. Does this indicate 'malfunction' light inside the PC?
I have AMD64 athlonx2 5000 dualcore processor, with windows vista service pack 1, I am having problems shutting down, it wont shut down unless i hold the button, I can't access my norton internet security to run a virus check and when i do it doesn't do it it just freezes, and it is up to date, and when i open up mozilla,IE, or opera, i get a message saying globalrootsystemrootsystem32msivxcqekhvopdbxsjkhyxfwrsyqtuixyjrbf.dll, i also tried to install service pack 2, but it was unable to install due to the restarting process
I have just bought and installed Premium 64 bit. I noticed that there is a power button to the right of the menu, when you click on the windows icon on the bottom left. This only puts the pc in sleep mode. I know that if you click on the arrow to the right, that there is the option to shut down. My question is this: Can i change the off button that is on the menu, to actally shut down the pc?? Is there an option to do that.
I am having trouble signing into msnews.microsoft.com from the toolbar button and the menu selection under tools. If I try to send a message (including this one) I get "Not Responding" . I have to then close Windows Mail from the Task Manager, reopen Windows Mail and try to send again. Is there some reason the Windows Mail does this even though I have given it my Windows Live ID and password?
I'm running Vista Home Premium (6.0.6001--sp 1). Since installing Checkpoint VPN client, the Switch User option has disappeared from my shutdown menu. (I've since deinstalled the VPN.) I've read elsewhere that it might be a group-settings issue, and it can be toggled by using the group administration panel. This was for Vista Ultimate, though; trying to run "gpedit.msc" fails with a "not found" error. Is there another way to alter this? Perhaps by hacking the registry? My wife and I switch fairly often between our profiles, so I would like to have the option.
I just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Everything I've read or seen about it shows a round start button at the bottom. Mine has an XP-type start button.
Every now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.
I have windows Vista Home Premium that came installed in my computer. My Vista is not an ugrade and I am having the same "windows is not genuine" problem. I have access to nothing but the internet! No access to my start button or anything else. My computer screen is completely black except for the "windows is not genuine" window that pops up, which allows me to get on the internet.
Is there a way of shutting down or restarting without going via the Start button? I'm guessing that there are command line commands to do it? If so what are they and how do I get a command line prompt on the desktop without going via the start button again?
I am on a laptop and desperate for task bar estate. I know you could do this for XP, but it isn't the same for vista. I want to remove the start button. I would just use the Win Key to open my menu.
how windows vista has that little circle as the start button? mine doesnt anymore! and the start menu looks like the old windows and i have tried to change the theme to windows vista but it stays the same.
I was trying to change my start button to something different, im on vista home 64bit. Im using a resourece hacker, took ownership of the windows folder and when i get into my explorer.exe and i go to bitmap it doesnt have 6801, 6805 and 6808. It goes to 210 and then skips to the 7000s.

When i on my computer ( Dell Dimension E520 ) for three hours, suddenly shut down my computer, But a start button keep on flasher. I tries to on it back after shut down, but in vain, i believe sometime do with power supply. because after next day computer can start again.
If I go into start menu-all programs and click on one, nothing. If I click task manager, nothing and I cant reboot using start-shut down or restart. I have to manually close down the computer, i.e. unplug mains power, re-plug and re-start the box. Everything is then fine-for a while, but sure enough, it starts all over again, maybe 24 maybe 48hrs later. It's happened about three/four times in the last week. There's obviously some app either not working or having a fit of some kind.
when i upgraded to SP2 my start button stopped responding to my mouse click. i tried goin back to SP1 but it still didnt work? when i try to right-click on the start orb it comes up but with three black rows at the bottom of the right-click menu? i had to download that "Vista Start Menu" just to use it again but i'd rather have the normal start menu.
This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........
When I click on Help and Support in the start menu, Help is started, but I get a message like this: The topic you are looking for is not available in this version of Windows.
i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...
I just installed SP 1 and now the Start Menu and Task Bar are gone. It was a lot of work to install. I'd hate to have to take it back out again. Task Bar wasn't locked but wasn't set to hide either.
