"Search" Entry In Windows Vista Start Menu
Nov 7, 2008
As you can see in this image my "Search" selection (I don't know what can I call it) is GONE. It's not in my "Start Menu". Can anybody please tell me how can I get it back, and where did it go in first place?

In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft removed the option for the Search button on the right side of the start panel. If you used that button frequently it is possible to bring it back by replacing the Help and Support button....

my Recent Items list has disappeared. I've been to the Start Menu properties window, and under Privacy, I only have a single entry, "Store and display a list of recently opened programs". The corresponding entry for documents is missing. Furthermore, although I can check the one-and-only tick-box, the setting doesn't hold, and it's unchecked again next time I open Properties. I have a Recent Items folder (with the correct icon), deep in my User folder, but it's empty. I tried restoring the desktop.ini file from an early disk image, but although the restore appears to work according to the image program, the folder remains stubbornly empty. It's as though some system setting registry value has been set prohibiting the use or display of this Recent Items folder.

This is a small thing but still something that bugs me. I was watching one of the Vista demo videos and it seems there is suppose to be a link to the search folder on my start menu. The first time I used the "windows/f" shortcut it brought up google search (google desktop came preinstalled with my computer) so I went to "default" programs and made windows search the default program and now the search folder comes up but I can't find a way to put a link to it on my start menu. I have tried going through the list on the start menu "customize" section but it's not on the list. I have Vist Home Premium if that makes any difference.

Is there any way to change the default action when a person hits 'Enter' inside the Start Menu's search text box? I would rather "Search the Internet" when I hit Enter rather than having VISTA search my hard drive (index).

When a users enters text in the search box on the start panel Windows automatically searches the file index as well. The file index includes all of the searchable files on your hard drive and can be quite large. One way to speed up searching through your start menu applications is to narrow the scope of the search so that it does not include hard drive files.
Prevent Start Menu Searches from searching the File index:
1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer and finally Advanced.
3. Find and right click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify....

I am REALLY mad to read (winsupersite.com) that Vista Service Pack 1 R E M O V E S the instant search field from the start menu! I use the instant search often, finding it the easiest way find a single file that i'm not certain where lies. And now MS will punish me as a customer by withdrawing one of the useful features of vista (instead of the many useless ones) just because Google complains. Microsoft, shame on you for NOT focusing on delivering a good product to your customers, but continuing with silly stuff like RED or Version N or 8 different kinds of Vista SKU's......

The search box on the new Start Menu in Windows Vista can be very useful for everyday tasks. This search box is very powerful because not only does it search the start menu and control panel, but it also searches your pictures, documents and even your e-mails. The scope of the search is very wide and you can see some performance benefits if you narrow it down to just searching the start menu and control panel. Follow these steps to optimize your start menu search:
Right click on the start button and select Properties.
Click on the Customize button.
Remove the check from Search Communications....

Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 item on Searching from Search Folder states the Search Folder (Figure 7-22) can be opened from the Start menu. "To get to the Search box, open the Start menu and choose Search." When I open the Start menu, I do not see a "Search" to choose, other than the search box at the bottom left which does not open a Search Folder. What am I missing?

Reading the latest Computer Shopper, one of the tips was using the Vista snipping tool. The article says it is in the accessories folder on the start menu. For the life of me, I can not see it. How do I make it show up?
For Vista users you can just type "Snipping Tool" in the search bar in the windows menu. The first time you run it it will ask if you want to add it to your quick launch bar. I selected yes keeping in mind it is always easier to remove something from it than to add to it.

I can't seem to find Newsgroups for Windows 7, so I'm hoping to find an answer for my question here! I've installed Win7 on my laptop and want to customize the Start Menu's All Programs windows. I normally consolidate like programs/folders into one common folder to minimize the number of items on the All Program window (i.e. all Microsoft related items in one folder called something like Microsoft Programs). I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Windows 7.

In XP I could use Classic menus and put the programs I wanted into my start
menu and launch them by pressing the Start Key and then the first letter of
the program. If I do that now, it seems to do a search of my HD for items
with that letter in it. Can someone tell me how to get this function in Win
7.

I want to reorganize some of the items on the Windows Start Menu to make it more streamlined and functional. I am right clicking the Windows Start button and choosing "Explore All Users" as directed. It works fine for 85% of the items on the Start Menu but there are still several items on the menu that don't show up in the Start Menu/Programs directory that comes up to edit the menu. How do I access these other items? They must be listed somewhere.

In XP, I used my Windows Key to map to Ventrilo speak (I used Litestep, not Explorer). In Vista (and Windows 7) this little bug is proving to be quite annoying. I've love to be able to just disable to Start Menu pop-up, or at least disable it when in game, but still maintain it as a normal key.

I'd like to get "Windows Mail" back into the top of the menu that comes up with clicking on the Start globe in the taskbar. I deleted it thinking it would confuse the 92 year old client whose machine this is, as she was going to use AOL webmail. However, most webmail applications are so frought with garbage on the screen, that the appearance of Windows Mail (uncluttered) seems a good alternative for one with macular degeneration (she can't see at all well).

Is the Start Menu in Vista Premium 64-bit supposed to be transparent? If so, mine is not, and I would prefer that it was. Is there some tweak that I am missing? I am running the Aero Glass desktop, but my Start Menu is still opaque. I have tried a dozen 3rd party programs, to no avail. WindowBlinds from Stardock wreaks havoc on my desktop settings. Does anyone have a clue as to how to make and desktop (and perhaps the right-click context menu) transparent?

Could it be possible to disable/re-enable "Windows" key or any combinations of keys such as "Windows" + "Esc" via registry, using VB6?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).
The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:
Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900
I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Installed SP1, now when I right click on any folder in windows explorer, the search option is missing from the context menu? Tried all my drives and a bunch of
different folders, still no search. I enabled Windows Search service again, had it disabled since it eats to many resources, still no search. Pre-SP1 of course did not do this.
