I've had Vista for a while now and out of the blue weird things start happening. Whenever I browse through folders on my hd via an application like Photoshop or Internet Explorer, that application will lock up when I get into Documents. Whenever I make a 'New Folder' the folder icon does not show up and its this weird white thing. Almost all folders in Windows Explorer look like this and it's extremely annoying.
View 4 RepliesIt has some good icons the ones i was interested in was the Blue/Green folder icons similar to the ones installed on my Vista , I downloaded them extracted as advised everything OK but when i tried to us them IE Customise/Change icon/browse route they don't show up in the folder which is strange because i can open the folder normally and see them , they are in PNG format could this be the problem if anybody manages to use them or can shed some light on

Some of my avi files show a picture and some others show a black icon. I did not have this problem before. Before all my avi files show a picture. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (new version). View 6 Replies View RelatedPC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
When i put Cod4 in the cd rom does nothing or on any other game i tryed Blackhawak down i have tryed Joint ops i dont even show the icon like xp would. The driver is working nothing wrong with it. im gonna have this Dang vista for a couple of weeks till my other pc gets out of the shop with xp power surge got to love that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?

I have looked into the properties and location, channel and lun are all at 0. I can get the disk to run if I click on the DVD folder on the left handside.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.

The printer however does not show up under devices and printer folder. I am trying to remove the printer from the system and from showng up as an available printer when I go to print.

Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter spending hours trying to find 20 GB that Explorer reported was on my C:drive that wasn't there when I added up the sizes of all the visible and hidden files and folders, I finally discovered 16 GB of data in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsWERReportQueue folder! 16 GB! This folder is the Windows Error Reporting queue. I have been having some trouble with Windows Update and a few other Vista things, but my problems can't be so interesting that it takes 16 GB to describe them. I only found it with a freeware program called WinDirStat. Explorer didn't show it in any folder. I just deleted it all and so far so good. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive (portable) that I have stored a bunch of digital scrapbooking kits on. When I plug it into my laptop, I can not figure out how to change the view of it so I can just put one "picture" on the folder. I need to know what is in each folder by looking at one picture on the icon and for the life of me, I can not get it to work. I right click, go to customize and choose file. I pick what I want on there and then click apply and it does not work. I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I can get it to work on something that is internal but not the external.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a folder with about 142 gigs of files in it and when I open it up, it takes sometimes 15 sec. before anything shows in the folder, while the little strip across the top of the folder does its "Progress" thing. Yes, I have Indexing on for that partition (this is a partition of my main hard drive; it is a 566g partition used only for archiving and it has 126gigs left).
What strikes me as particularly stupid about this is that it does the "progress" thing EVERY time, even if I close it and open it again 10 seconds later, it does not "remember" the indexing or whatever it just did! Is there any way to fix this? Seems absolutely ridiculous to have a super fast computer that can't find files in a folder without waiting 15 seconds!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
I would like to set some key folders to have icons that identify what is inside. So my Windows install folder would show a folder with the Windows logo in front. (I have the ICO for that.) But how do you do that? I found a folder that has such a specific icon, but I wasn't successful getting it to work. My example used an icon inside an EXE. My icon is a stand-alone ICO.

See attachments for images. To try and fix the Shortcut Icons i have installed FxVisor32 for 32-bit Vista.
