Mar 30, 2009
In Explorer's left pane there is a down arrow used I believe to close the Folders. When I click this down arrow the folders become invisible (closed) but I'm unable to reopen them unless I close Explorer and reopen it. Also, without having to to install 3rd party software, is there a way in Explorer tot display ONLY the Folder structure of my drives? I want only to 'see' C: open and the other drives closed. I'm using Vista Home Basic SP1

In an attempt to solve a problem with an MS Office document, I went into Task Manager/Processes and closed Explorer.exe. It closed Office, but more importantly, it also closed my whole Desktop Shell!!! Now everything's gone, including my Start Menu and Task Bar. How can I get it all back?

I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and migrated my old Outlook Express folders and emails as per the Help instructions. All appeared well as all the old folders appear in Windows Mail. However there appear to be NO emails in any of the folders. What is also strange is that some of these apparently empty folders appear in bold displaying the number of unread emails in the folder. Presumably some indexing fault has occurred - repeated attempts at importing have failed.

Internet Explore and Windows Host Process Server on my computer are attempting to connect multiple times a day (20 or more) to numerous google.com ip addresses across a wide viriety of ports in the 45000's. I have been unable to close the processes. The Internet Explorer process has been running as a seperate program that I am unable to see and uses 45,000k of ram. It is also not possible for me to shut the program down. I have nine svchost.exe (windows host process services) running which are also attempting to communicate with google.com. These events are of great concern to me as I work for a financial firm and keep large amounts of proprietary knowledge on my computer.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium edition. Earlier today, a new problem started to occur. Each time I close a folder, I get a message telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working. It then restarts and things appear fine. I can do everything as normal on the computer, but if I try to close a folder again, same error message.

After I close Internet Explorer my desktop Icon's become frozen. The tool bar and start menu work fine. I'm running Windows Vista with IE8. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, have used SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as my malware removal tools. I've used system restore and still having the same problem. I don't have a recovery disk, just the disk that Dell issues with it's new computers.

I'm having a problem with Windows Vista Home Premium, whenever I go to select a profile "Administrator" or "AL". AL gives me a black screen with an error message "Windows Explorer has encountered and error and had to close", it also says "Host Process has encountered and error and needs to close", after opening Task Manager. If I try to open explorer.exe through Task Manager, it stops working, and I can't get anything else working either it just has the same problem.
The only process running are:............

I have just started using M/S Office words. I saved my homework as a docx file. When I went to reopen my saved homework(in Documents), I get a message, docx is not a valid Win32 application'. Why is this? Is it because I am running Vista 64bit on my computer. I moved the homework to a m/stick, put the stick into my laptop (vista 32bit)and the homework opened, good as gold.

I have a multi-boot machine on which I cannot map certain folders to which I have access at work. I can map these folders with no problem when I boot to XP or Vista 64 on the same machine (using the same batch file for the net use commands) but I get a system error 53 (network path not found) error when I try to do so using Vista 32. As far as I can tell the network configurations are identical in the Vista 64 and Vista 32 installations.
In Vista 32 I can ping the servers on which the folders reside and I can map other folders in the same domain. How can this be=97and how can I correct it since Vista 32 is my primary working OS?

I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer. This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead. Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying.

I don't have this problem, presumably due to my using Classic view in Windows Explorer. But a lady whose machine I help with has a behavior that I find infuriating. I think she has a default setup except she uses the single-click setting. The behavior is that I start Windows Explorer, in "explorer view", naturally. But when I click on a drive or folder in the left-hand "folders" column, the folder opens but the left-hand column disappears! Of course, I'm sure you all know that in Vista, in the View menu of Windows Explorer, in the "Explorer bar" sub-menu, there is no longer any "Folders" item to select like there has been for a few previous versions of Windows. Is there some replacement mechanism I can use to restore the column, some mechanism that is so well hidden that this seasoned Windows user can't find it? And is there some way to prevent the column from disappearing?

When I start Explorer it shows various sub-folders for some folders but not for all them though, i.e. all the folders under "Microsoft" for example, and I cannot figure out how to change that so that it only shows the folders under "Local Disk (C. I have tried just about everything but to no avail. When I first open Explorer it always highlights "Start Menu" with its sub-folders. I have read numerous posts and messages but couldn't find the answer.

I created a download folder for gigatribe. From gigatribe I can find the folder and its contents, but not through explorer. A similar issue happened with VuePrint, the photo editing/managing software that I use. If I move something to an existing folder I can find the file. If I create a file with VuePrint then it and its contents remain hidden.

When I bring up Windows Explorer it no longer shows the tree view of folders in the left pane. Actually, there's no left pane at all. And the "folders" button on the toolbar is gone.
I've got Vista Ultimate 32bit on a quad-core 4G machine.
This just recently happened so I'm assuming something got clobbered.

I have moved my Users directory to a separate drive as described here. I did not encounter any serious issue, however my special folders are duplicated in the Windows Explorer. For instance in my user folder I have two Documents folder, one pointing to C:UsersyannickDocuments and the other to D:UsersyannickDocuments. C:Users is a junction that points to D:Users. My media files are duplicated as well in Windows Media Player.

Vista had a freeze up when trying to transfer files from a USB stick - however all seemed normal after a restart. I also "upgraded" to AVG v8.01 (free) I have no idea if either of these actions have caused my problem. Now whenever I open 'any' folder it takes several seconds before the contents appear. After this all other folders open instantly. If I then close all the open folders - this behaviour repeats with the first folder to be opened taking time to open.

What is now called Windows Explorer in Vista has been crippled so that only the files and folders for the current user can be explored. Where is the replacement for Windows Explorer in Vista? I am looking for the tool that will allow an administrator to explore the entire hard drive, create folders and copy files to wherever necessary. I need to create a folder that will contain some executable and configuration files in a location where users cannot accidently find them and delete them.

I am connecting an external hard drive (Acomdata 250G drive - pretty standard) via USB to my HP laptop running Vista. I am able to see the device listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Drilling into Properties, I see that the device is running properly and, having re-loaded the device drivers, I have the most recent drivers. The issue: I am unable to see the device listed in Window Explorer, and thus I can't drill into the folders to get at the content.

I had to re-formal my hard drive due to some difficulties I have been having. When I restored my original OS I found that I had 2 Internet Explorer icons. I would like to be able to use the X32 bit version of IE as my default browser. How can I accomplish this? I have one game provider that runs only on X32 bit, and I would like to be able to download their games. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition X64 bit SP2.

Dirve 0: Primary Partition for current XP, another Primary Partition for a new install of Vista Drive 1: The data drive. I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)
I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.
