Dual Booting With Ubuntu

Mar 23, 2008

I have been playing with Ubuntu guest virtual machine on Vista host.I am toying with the idea of dual booting and installing it properly. Can I run an Ubuntu Live CD on a Vista machine (to check whether all my hardware is compatible, etc) without it affecting my Vista installation in any way ? As I understand it, I will just be booting from the CD without putting anything on my hard disk at all.But I would seek assurance that it really isn't going to do me any harm.

If I decide that my hardware is OK (its a fairly high spec machine running Vista Ultimate 64 bit) what is the best way to go about it? I have a 750Gb disk which I reckon I can afford to give 200Gb to Ubuntu. Should I repartition from windows? Do I need another program (if so what?) or does Windows itself handle this? How do I install Ubuntu but still retain control over which operating system I want to run? Vista will still be my main OS. I don't particularly want ubuntu to have control of the booting process.....

Dual Booting With 32 Bit After 64 Bit

Jul 6, 2008

I just purchased a machine with a 64 bit OEM. I have created another partition because I want to install 32 bit on there. However, it is not working so I was wondering if there was something I am not doing right here. I want to use the 32 bit for internet access and itunes and the 64 bit for gaming. I do not have any discs with the 64 bit OS on it either everything I have here is 32 bit.

Setting Up Dual Booting

May 26, 2008

I've just got a new computer with Vista. I want to set up a dual boot system so that I can also access XP.

I have read that this is much easier to do if XP is the first OS, followed by installing Vista, but I can't do that.

I have also read that it can still be done by creating a new partition from within Vista, then installing XP into that. I understand that this process will overwrite the Vista boot loader and the computer will then only boot into XP, but that a programme called VistaBoot PRO can then be used to reset that, and you are then left with dual-booting.

But has anyone had any experience of doing this? Or are there any foreseeable problems.

E.g. - when I start installing XP, will it need access to the motherboard/graphics card drivers?

One thing I'm wondering about is, at the stage where I can only boot into XP, the hard disk is a SATA one (no RAID set up) and I seem to recall XP having issues with these at boot-up?

Dual Booting And XP, Invisible?

Jun 22, 2008

Dirve 0: Primary Partition for current XP, another Primary Partition for a new install of Vista Drive 1: The data drive. I absolutely must have the data drive, Drive 1, be the D drive. I have a lot of applications that expect to find the data there and I need to switch between the two OS's seamlessly (I am a software developer and testing in both OS's)

I have tried installing Vista twice now and both times the D drive is the XP primary partition. It looks like Microsoft is using the XP partition as the boot partition, even when booting Vista. The XP partition is first, so I am not surprised. What I need is some way of booting up so that the partition that XP is on is hidden, which I know is one of the states a Primary partition can be in. Back in years gone by, I did this with System Commander, but there has to be a less expensive (free) way of doing it today.

Dual Booting: No Option For Loading Xp

May 26, 2008

I have had visa and xp in a multi boot configuration. However, decided that I do not need xp any more. I have vista and xp on two physically seperate hard drive. So I used 'Vista boot pro' to delete the windows xp MBR. When I reset the computer it worked fine and their was no option for loading xp. Than I decided to erase the drive that xp was on (not vista), using East-Tec Eraser 2008 to wipe the drive. This took 5 hours as the drive was 100 gb. When it finished I then reset the computer and the screen said 'No operating system found'. I then used the original visa dvd to fix the boot record, however, when I tried there was no record of any operating system. I know that the installation is still there as I saw it using the find driver dialog box.

Dual Booting And Ghost Imaging

Apr 13, 2009

I normally work in a straight Windows Vista Business environment on my laptop using Ghost 2003 to image my setup (which occasionally causes problems with the image files but that is another issue) - I was trying to setup a dual boot - XP SP3 and Vista SP1 environment with XP as the primary boot partition installed (20 GB) and the rest of my laptop's HDD for Vista (130 GB approx) I got the dual booting done with BCDedit to fix the Boot Manager but after I ghosted the image (successfully), verified the image (successful) and did a test restoration (successful) - I was unable to boot into XP or Vista - XP would complain at NTLDR and Vista at first about WINLOAD and after repairs with my Vista DVD, would BSOD during boot - what did I do wrong and/or how can I fix it?

Vista And Ubuntu?

Feb 23, 2009

Without trying to create controversy, but simply with the desire to use both
OS's on the same machine:

Installed: Dell motivated Vista Home Premium, SP1, 32 bit.

Capacity: Dual core Inspiron & 300GB HD, w. MS Virual PC (39MB, I believe),
290 GB C: w. Vista installed and 10 GB D: for recovery.

My question is: can I safely install ubuntu, v.7.10, in the virtual pc, with
the intention to dual boot?

Ubuntu Under The Spotlight

Oct 7, 2009

Ubuntu, it is generally well known, as being behind Windows Vista or 7 in the sales department, possibly on a scale of about 50-1. Normally, sales indicate popularity on a product. We can also assume from these figures that volume of sales could also indicate a certain quality of that product.

Therefore, on that assumption, the 50-1 deficit that Ubuntu lags behind in the sales department, is possibly not even the 2nd best nor even the 3rd or 4th best OS come to think of it. I therefore pondered on this question. Why on earth should I settle for second best, let alone third or fourth best? If they can afford it, most people in life want the best. That is why I will be buying Windows 7 this month...........

It seems that people who troll here have nothing better to do. They think Ubuntu is the greatest product since sliced bread. Yet they come here day after day, trying to get people to switch to that inferior product. Ubuntu is for nerds. The reason they come here is they can't use Ubuntu so they do the next best thing. Come to the vista group and try to get people to convert. Most people are smart enough to see through all that crap. People want to use their Windows Vista or Windows XP. They don't need or want some stupid piece of crap like Ubuntu.

ALIAS & UBUNTU TWO-FACES

Oct 3, 2009

Alias is quite a two face. Shame on the corporations making money, while he yachts it away on monies made installing Ubuntu. ITN News: MADRID - Air pollution has long been a fact of life in Spanish cities, but scientists now say it is not just smog that chokes people as they walk to work or stroll through the park. A new study has found the air in Madrid and Barcelona is also laced with atleast five drugs - most prominently cocaine.

The Superior Council of Scientific Investigations, a government institute, said on its Web site Thursday that in addition to cocaine, they found trace amounts of amphetamines, opiates, cannabinoids and lysergic acid - a relative of LSD - in two air-quality control stations, one in each cities. With the amount of WEED Alias smokes and the drugs in the air, Alias' brain has been fried. No wonder why Ubuntu does well in Spain, they are too stoned to know any better. My mom has recently returned from France & Spain, and is not too impressed. Homeless, poor and one woman tried to snatch my mom's purse in daylight. Congratulations Alias. Yours is a truly developed country.

Ubuntu 8.04 What A Piece Of Junk

Apr 30, 2008

I thought I would download the new Ubuntu 8.04 and give it a try because all the Ubuntu nut jobs were saying how cool Ubuntu is with their new release. I installed Ubuntu on my machine. I tried Open Office Spreadsheet. I thought I would try to enter a Macro then run it. I then had to install Java to be able to run a macro. If I didn't know that I needed to use Synaptic to figure out how to get the Java update, I would be screwed along with many others who try this crap. Just FYI

OK, so Java installs. BFD. It works but it isn't that good. Now, lets play some music. I navigated to bobrivers.com to play a tune. I was prompted to install some more updates. Fine. Did that. The install went OK. Then I had to install a couple more updates. That went fine. Now I clicked on the song to play and the page just froze.

No wonder why Ubuntu is such a piece of crap. Can't play a simple tune from a web page. Now in Vista, I could navigate right to the page, play the song and I would be as happy as a clam in a whorehouse.
