i have and use my pc entirely for a MEdia Center. I created a 40 Gig system partition which is now down to its last GB which i find ridiculous seeing i have minimal applications installed. I have deleted the memory dump file and disabled this function, and run a defrag which now has given me 4GB of space. Now a quick check shows about 22 GIG of installed apps including the OS and a 5 GIG pagefile.

It use to be windows xp as a second OS but i deleted it and it left me with 15 gigs of space. I can format it and shrink it just to test if it functions and it does. oh I also tried using partition wizard home edition, it did not work, and i tried to use EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition free edition but it said that its no compatibale with 64-bit even though i got it from the 64-bit section.( and yes just incase, I right clicked and ran as administrator )
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
I've got a Hp computer that has Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it and I want to remove the partition D which is the recovery partition. I have factory backup dvd's, made my own backup dvd's and have a True Image of the drive with both partitions, so I think I'm covered. Anyone know how to go about removing the complete partition?

I'm looking for a Free Partition program to partition my external hard drive into at least 2 partitions. Does anyone know of such a program that's straight forward without all the bells and whistles? Also, would I set the partitions as Logical or Primary? Currently the drive is a Primary but if I partition it into 2 partitions what should they be?
My C: drive is 1Tb in size (931.43Gb), with Used Space of 73.8Gb and Free Space of 857.65Gb. I want to shrink the C: partition down to 200Gb, and use this just for my OS and App files - I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. This would then leave me with a new partition of c. 750Gb for my data files and documents etc. However, Vista will only offer to shrink the C: partition by around 260Gb as a maximum. It will not allow me to select a larger size than this. I've tried turning off System Restore / Shadow Copies, but this makes no difference. Any ideas why this should be, and what can I do? p.s. I've tried using Acronis Disk Director as well, but whilst I can select a new C: partition size of 200Gb, when the system reboots, nothing has changed, so ADD won't work either.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen starting up Vista, my display is always off to the left of the screen, meaning my start button is way off the screen and there's a black space on the right, like the display has simply been moved 2 inches to the left. I can fix it, by entering NVIDIA Control Panel and switch connector: back and forth between HDMI-HDTV (audio disabled) and HDMI - HDTV (audio enabled). but if the pc enters sleep or I reboot the problem is back.
Now I know the general problem because I had it with xp also, seems my monitor likes to tell my pc that it's a tv (I'm sorry I'm not into the tech lingo). And I've fixed it previously by changing codes in .ini files and ect. but I'd rather not do it on a new crisp clean first time install of Vista, anyone know of this problem and how to fix it for good?
Turned off UAC in Vista x64 Ultimate, Received an e-mail that appeared to be my CNN alerts. It was Antivirus XP 2008 virus. Avast Pro 4.8 has been finding viruses in both Safe Mode and regular. Search and Destroy can't seem to deal with them. Backing up my data right now. Ready to reinstall everything. S&D reports clear. IE7 does not always work. I reset and internet connection gets blocked.

I just noticed that the audio from the left comes from the right speaker and vice-versa. This happens randomly and the problem suddenly disappears. The problem is happening again and I don't know how to swap the two speakers. A restart will temporarily fix the problem but later on it gets swapped again. I can't switch the position of the speakers because this is a laptop. This gets very annoying when I'm playing games such as CS.

Not sure what you call the panels that ariced when you push the logo key between the left Ctrl & Alt, but things have disappeared over the past several months. The first I noticed was that the DOCUMENTS sign no longer took me to my documents folder, as it used to do. The other things have been happening (or not happening) in the past few weeks. I don't recall everything that used to be on the right side panel, but here's what's left:........
Is there any way to stop the navigation pane from shifting left/right when opening/closing folders. It is VERY annoying. On a positive note, I have found several fixes for problems in these forums.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy acer 5335 is brand new and has vista basic. when i first connected to the internet i installed all available updates including explorer 8 and vista service pack 2. i also downloaded avg anti virus and sunbelt firewall. the problem i have is that some links in some sites will not open at all, some need a right click to select 'open' from the menu, and others open as they should with just a single left click. examples, on my hotmail page, mails will open with a single left click, but the reply or new mail controls will not respond to right or left.
i can left click to view details of cars from the listings, but if i want to view the extra pictures i need to right click and select open. google search works fine and most forum sites as i've been looking for a fix have been ok too. the having to right click isn't too much of a problem but not being able to reply to mail is going to be a pain.
I keep getting a message flash up on my screen saying I have almost no space left on my Vista (C drive. In the 'Computer' section it says I have 4.40 GB free out of 116 GB and the whole bar is coloured red (which I assume means critical!) I really have no idea why I would be using so much space, I don't really download anything, I have programmes such as Spotify and Itunes but even they don't get used often. I got rid of things like Google Earth but it's made no difference. I have a Toshiba Laptop and I seem to remember that almost half the space was taken up the first day I took it home, could it be that Toshiba have filled it with unnecessary programmes?!

When im playing games and running my benchmark system i get invisible lines going from left to right on my display. i can see the lines whenever my player moves. i have also seen a decrease in frames per second. its a sony vaio laptop. the drivers are the most updated and changing stuff in the 3D section of the control center DOeSNT.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Touchsmart PC, running Vista x64 and using Internet Explorer 8. Recently we had a malware virus which was successfully removed by the computer technician. Everything is back to normal and when we run a virus scan it is now all clean. However, when we are on the internet the mouse now can't click with the left button
on websites and we can't use the left button to click to navigate around the site. The only temporary way I have found (which is very difficult and limiting) is to right click on the site and scroll up to "Open" or click on the site with the left button and hit "enter" which sometimes works.
I have replaced the mouse and ensured all the mouse setting are correct. This problem doesn't happen in emails only on Internet Explorer.
Vista 64 installed fine however it will give a bsod when booting. The strange thing is it happens at the exact same spot every time. While booting the first low res green bar appears the slides left to right. THen the screen goes black. Instead of displaying the vista logo in the middle I see a bsod flash up and the system reboots. After a few goes it will boot properly and then run fine for hours. I've tried 2 different sets of RAM and both do the same thing. If I go down to 2gb it seems to be fine. I've seen the other thread, but its over 60 pages long!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI previously had a problem on my Gateway Laptop Computer - Gateway Core2 Duo Centrino, that came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I could not fix. I had to do a System Recovery using the on-screen program and did not back up any of my files, in attempt to clear out everything that I had on the computer. After I completed this process, I set up my desktop and internet, and started over. When reviewing my Hard Disk Drives on my "Computer" menu, I notice that my C: Drive is almost all the way full (8.55 GB free of 139 GB).
Although I downloaded a few programs and set up my Internet Security, I am sure I did not install anything large enough to use up almost all of the computers storage space for programs and files. By doing the System Recovery I thought that it would erase everything so that my computer would be back to it's factory condition. Could my previous files still be in the computer? After searching this forum, I did not find any information on the specific question that convinsed me of the soultion,
or a course of action.
I created a restore point and went into the System Tools menu and attempted the disk cleanup on the recovery drive C: where Windows Vista is stored and then cleaned up the up the Shadow Copies, and nothing helped. I went through many windows folders and found nothing that would amount to the vast amount of space that is apparently taken up.
I only use Windows Mail to handle my MS newsgroups (it does an excellent job of this). I have now subscribed to 10 newsgroups, and am finding it harder to find the few I usually go to, compared to the ones that I only go to once or twice, whenever I have a rare question. Is there a way I can manually change the order in which they appear (in the left pane--I see "Local Folders" and "Microsoft Communities" as the two major sections)? It looks like Windows Main arranges them in alphabetical order. Is there any way I can drag-n-drop, or change them in any other way?
View 8 Replies View Related*I have recently installed a new Canon MP620B color printer to print mostly correspondence coming and going on Windows Mail, running on a Vista Home Premium OS. The Canon replaced a HP Photosmart that started leaking ink.*
*My problem is when printing email the far left edge of the copy (type) does not print. The From: To: Cc: are missing the left half of the F, T and C letters all the way down the page as well. It's as if the page is not centered in the print area.*
*Under the print preferences I have tried "print to fit" and all the options to get that left edge to come out. This does not happen on Word docs however there is a left margin set on those.
I do not use the documents folder nor the desktop for data storage. My data is always on another hard drive and I an extra internal and several external hard drives. Everytime I open explorer, the folder list shows with Documents expanded. I have to minimize that, then scroll up and minimum my user name folder, then maximize the Computer folder. That is what I want to see when I open explorer.
It is possible to save that setting. I have seen a lot of posts on folder view, but I am not sure if anyone actually talks about the left half of this view setting. Why is My computer now part of the desktop and sub of user? Already in XP I hated that the C drive always opened explanded.
When using Windows Mail, I have a series of folders and sub-folders on the left side. It used to be that the sub-folders were always closed. Now, for some reason, the sub-folders are always open when I open up Windows Mail.
This is regardless of how I exit Windows Mail. In other words, when I'm all done with Windows Mail, I leave it with all sub-folders closed, but the next time when I open and use it again, I find that all the sub-folders are open again.
I m looking for the correct way of displaying all my email addresses on the left payne underneath - the Local Folders, inbox, sent, drafts etc.. instead of going up to the toolbar and going through that procedure looking for the correct addresses for an email.
I just want it the way i had it on my old pc when i used outlook express. Also currently when emailing - the persons name and email address both appear in the 'to' box, which i cant seem to fix to just the persons real name. Both of these question are real headscratchers for me and have spent many hours on them already.
