Computer In A Low Power State

Jan 29, 2009

I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.

I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.

Turn Off The Power, Computer Goes To Sleep

May 4, 2008

The 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.

Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.

Power Fluctuation Computer Refused Boot Up

May 22, 2008

I have a computer that was working very well, but lately when I was working on a important project, there was a power fluctuation for a couple of times (I thought that was normal) but after the last power fluctuation my computer refused to boot up. There seems to be a failure of some kind?..but I need to get the projects back that are still in that disk.

Power Outage During Computer Wake-up Stops 32-bit Processes From Running

Apr 16, 2009

Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.

I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.

I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.

I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?

Set The Power Options For The Computer To "go To Sleep" In 20 Minutes

Dec 5, 2009

I've Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba P200 Laptop and here's the tummy-turning experience I'm having. I've set the power options for the computer to "go to sleep" in 20 minutes. I've gone to the Power Options then "change power options" and there have set the "sleep" for twenty minutes. The weird and wonderful thing is, if I reboot the computer, this will work for say, three or four times, then it doesn't after that. I've set the "when sharing media" in the Multimedia Settings to "prevent idling to sleep" - but again, it refuses to work until I reboot the machine. Then again, it will work several times and then it doesn't. how to set this unit to sleep when left unattended after so many minutes.

Factory State Recovery

May 2, 2009

I have made a mistake and I am struggling to get out of this mess, I hope Shawn or someone who experienced this problem can help me out.

I was doing the Factory state recovery using Alt+F10 while booting in my Acer Aspire laptop, everything was fine until the "Acer Launch" window appeared. The last process Install eRecovery solution is not completing. The AL window just sitting in the middle of the screen and couldn't be moved. I tried to disable it from startup, msconfig window vanishes behind the Acer Launch window.

I think the cause of this problem is I forgot to create the 2nd(D: data) partition prior to starting the Recovery process.

My original set up was like this:

EISA hidden partition

C: system partition

D:data partition

I have deleted the D: partition and extended the C partition

I have created Recovery disc but I don't have Vista installation DVD as my machine is OEM version of Vista on it. I do have an Anytime upgrade DVD which came with the laptop when I bought.

Hibernation Sleep State Until Reactivated

Aug 1, 2009

Forgive my apparent ignorance about this, but I've posted in recent months about my machine waking up on its own while in Hibernation. However, it only happened seldomly --ninety to ninety-five percent of the time it just stayed in its Hibernation sleep state until I reactivated it. Well, that's no longer the case --it's waking up on its own more frequently, and for that reason is beginning to make me a bit suspicious. I should add here that my machine was attacked twice in the last week from an IP Address in China --my firewall intercepted it, and I did a search on the address and saw that a number of people here have been reporting and complaining about that same individual. So my question is this: to what extent does my firewall protect my machine when it's in Hibernation, and can it be woken up by a nosy guy in China that's trying to hack into peoples' machines here in the States?

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with the latest 64-bit MS Wireless IntelliMouse drivers. When logging onto the computer after completely shutting down the computer (not sleep mode) the mouse reconnects just fine.

Processor State; Lower Restrict CPU And Gain Battery Life?

Jul 18, 2009

I understand the point of a "maximum processor state." You can lower it to restrict the CPU and gain battery life. The CPU consumes less energy and the fans consume less energy from a cooler thermal load. I've never really understood the need for a "minimum processor state" though or what it even does for that matter.

Minimum And Maximum Processor State "Optimal" Setting

Apr 25, 2010

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit and an AMD X2 Dual-Core QL-60 processor (1.9 GHz).

In Vista Power options, there are 2 settings under Processor Power Management: Minimum and Maximum Processor State.

What are the optimal settings for these options? I fully understand that one might choose to have a lower maximum state when running on battery power to prolong battery life. I can think of no reason to have the maximum state below 100% when running plugged-in (unless, of course, one is trying to save electricity, keep the laptop cooler...)

How does minimum state work and what is the optimal setting? I know the default is 5% (but I've done a lot of Googling and cannot find an educated reason why 5% is the default.) Would it be correct for me to presume that if I set it at (say) 5%, then the processor will never operate below 5% of its capability (or whatever # of MHz is closest to 5% capacity) and will run all the way to the maximum specified state where needed? In other words, am I simply giving the processor the leverage to pick whatever power is required between its minimum and maximum specified states?

If my above assumption is correct and the processor will pick the optimum speed within the min/max range, why would I ever increase the minimum above 5% - and better still, why wouldn't I go right down to 1%? (Having said that, I read in one post that processors don't run in relative percentages - but 500Mhz, 800Mhz or whatever - so if my processor can only go as low as (say) 600MHz and my max is 1,900, then I guess if I set my minimum anywhere between 1 and 32%, it would never go below 600Mhz...)

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

HUGE Ram And GPU Power?

Is there a way to tune down Vista's hunger for RAM and GPU power? I could play Counter Strike: Source better on my laptop which had a single core AMD Turion 1.8ghz cpu, 1gig ram and X1600 gpu than my brand-spanking new Asus laptop which has a 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 2gig of ram and ATI HD 3470. This is just plain ridiculous that a newer laptop and newer software give me WORSE performance for a relatively old game. And it just isn't CS:S that's a problem either. Startup and shutdown time is WAY too long
