May 2, 2009I have made a mistake and I am struggling to get out of this mess, I hope Shawn or someone who experienced this problem can help me out.
I was doing the Factory state recovery using Alt+F10 while booting in my Acer Aspire laptop, everything was fine until the "Acer Launch" window appeared. The last process Install eRecovery solution is not completing. The AL window just sitting in the middle of the screen and couldn't be moved. I tried to disable it from startup, msconfig window vanishes behind the Acer Launch window.
I think the cause of this problem is I forgot to create the 2nd(D: data) partition prior to starting the Recovery process.
My original set up was like this:
EISA hidden partition
C: system partition
D:data partition
I have deleted the D: partition and extended the C partition
I have created Recovery disc but I don't have Vista installation DVD as my machine is OEM version of Vista on it. I do have an Anytime upgrade DVD which came with the laptop when I bought.
Computer In A Low Power State
Jan 29, 2009I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.
I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.
Return To Factory State?
Mar 28, 2008My laptop is Dell inspiron 1420, home premium 32 bit. It's about 5 months old. It came with :-
1.) OS reinstallment DVD
2.) Dell Drivers and Utilities disk
3.) Microsoft Works 8.5 disk
4.) Trend Micro Internet Security ( but I have changed to McAfee since)
It's only 5 months ago that I learned how to use computer by reading and asking questions. So please be step-by-step in showing me how to.
Windows Logon:do Not Accept The Password
Mar 29, 2008I recently set a password for my user account in Vista Home Premium, which worked fine when I locked the account and unlocked it again to try it out. After restarting, however, it wouldn't accept the password! There's only my account and a disabled guest account, and I use the password for some of my online accounts, so I know I got the password right. I got back into Windows by using the password reset on my USB-stick, but it's weird... and it gets better! Today I locked the account while I was in the library, and when I got back I couldn't log back in! Switching users, however, and then logging in with the locked account worked... so password and user account are fine, it just doesn't always get accepted.

Mar 27, 2008Bought a Toshiba laptop 10 months ago and everything worked fine. With MS updates (only downloaded defender and Vista related items) things started to happen. Have worked through every problem except can not recieve emails. (Can send with no problem.) Have Cox internet and they determined I can recieve emails through their website so it is Vista interference. Spent two hours yesterday with Toshiba tech service trying to isolate and repair problem. Was not successful.
The problem is this: When Windows mail comes up, or when I hit send and receive, I get a box that says "Windows Security, Logon to POP.EAST.COX.NET" and the appropraite places to put in my Username and Password. When this is done, It just comes back with the same Windows Security box. The Toshiba Rep tried numerous things with accounts and the usual settings, changing passwords, setting up a new account and trying to use that and all resulted in the same "Windows Security" box. He feels that there is something in Windows Security that is out of whack and said to try to delete that program but could not find it to delete it. (I have router so no firewall is not a problem and AVG antivirus.)
By Pass Windows Auto-Logon
Apr 11, 2008I have successfully setup a lab of computers to auto-logon using the below registry keys. My problem is I am unable to bypass the auto-logon now. You can bypass it by holding down shift in Windows XP but that does not work in Vista Business.

Hibernation Sleep State Until Reactivated
Aug 1, 2009Forgive my apparent ignorance about this, but I've posted in recent months about my machine waking up on its own while in Hibernation. However, it only happened seldomly --ninety to ninety-five percent of the time it just stayed in its Hibernation sleep state until I reactivated it. Well, that's no longer the case --it's waking up on its own more frequently, and for that reason is beginning to make me a bit suspicious. I should add here that my machine was attacked twice in the last week from an IP Address in China --my firewall intercepted it, and I did a search on the address and saw that a number of people here have been reporting and complaining about that same individual. So my question is this: to what extent does my firewall protect my machine when it's in Hibernation, and can it be woken up by a nosy guy in China that's trying to hack into peoples' machines here in the States?

I then changed the outgoing server as my ISP is currently BT and this is what theeir website says. When I try to send emails then, I get the windows security logon. When I enter my username and password, it just keeps reappearing as if I have entered it incorrectly. I have rechecked the details in properties and I am entering them correctly. When I cancel the logon screen, I get a blank error.
Windows Mail Login: Asking Logon Name And Password?
Feb 17, 2009I have never had to use a password to get or send messages. Today I logged on after not being on for a week and now windows security is asking for a logon name and password. What the heck happened? I have been slowly downloading the updates and yes I am behind in downloading them. I am on dialup so it takes a while to download them. Is this some type of new security? I don't want to lose the emails I have by setting up a new account.

1. We are currently rolling out Windows Vista (Business) in my company
2. We have a company logon script , which runs after the user logs onto the pc , and displays current company news , as its maps drives and runs app fixes and some windows updates
3. On our current platform , Windows XP , the users can see this - however with Vista the "welcome screen" sits in there and hids the logon script , so users cannot see the "company news" etc.
Is there a way of removing the welcome screen , or indeed making the welcome screen transparent??? This is a big need for my company , and I need to get it working I have been able to edit the weclome screen to get it changed to a picture of my choosing. By the way , this is not the Welcome Center that appears after logon - and enabling/disabling fast user switching or turning off ctrl&alt&del to logon in the policies, as specified by some other forums does not work.
Open Programs: The Pipe State Is Invalid
Apr 25, 2009When I try to open some of my programs I get the error message, "The pipe state is invalid". whenever I leave the computer in Sleep mode and there after retrieve it, my Samsung Printer ML-2240 series stops working. When I give a command, "Find a Printer", the error message appears "The pipe state is invalid". This happens so often that I get very annoyed and am unable to use the computer to its optimum capacity.

Mar 23, 2008I have a very annoying problem with my Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth. When after putting my computer in sleep mode the bluetooth mouse does not reconnect. The only thing I can do is pull the batteries out of the mouse and put them back in and only then it decides to reconnect.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with the latest 64-bit MS Wireless IntelliMouse drivers. When logging onto the computer after completely shutting down the computer (not sleep mode) the mouse reconnects just fine.

Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:
The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem
Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load?

Processor State; Lower Restrict CPU And Gain Battery Life?

The CPU consumes less energy and the fans consume less energy from a cooler thermal load. I've never really understood the need for a "minimum processor state" though or what it even does for that matter.

Minimum And Maximum Processor State "Optimal" Setting
Apr 25, 2010I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit and an AMD X2 Dual-Core QL-60 processor (1.9 GHz).
In Vista Power options, there are 2 settings under Processor Power Management: Minimum and Maximum Processor State.
What are the optimal settings for these options? I fully understand that one might choose to have a lower maximum state when running on battery power to prolong battery life. I can think of no reason to have the maximum state below 100% when running plugged-in (unless, of course, one is trying to save electricity, keep the laptop cooler...)
How does minimum state work and what is the optimal setting? I know the default is 5% (but I've done a lot of Googling and cannot find an educated reason why 5% is the default.) Would it be correct for me to presume that if I set it at (say) 5%, then the processor will never operate below 5% of its capability (or whatever # of MHz is closest to 5% capacity) and will run all the way to the maximum specified state where needed? In other words, am I simply giving the processor the leverage to pick whatever power is required between its minimum and maximum specified states?
If my above assumption is correct and the processor will pick the optimum speed within the min/max range, why would I ever increase the minimum above 5% - and better still, why wouldn't I go right down to 1%? (Having said that, I read in one post that processors don't run in relative percentages - but 500Mhz, 800Mhz or whatever - so if my processor can only go as low as (say) 600MHz and my max is 1,900, then I guess if I set my minimum anywhere between 1 and 32%, it would never go below 600Mhz...)
AppHang B1 :: Often Lock Up
Nov 19, 2008I lock up often... randomly. To unlock, I have to activate task manager and then click "look for solution" which re-starts IE losing in the process whatever work I am doing.
I have run antivirus many times and found none (Window defender, Norton and McAfee), I ran (twice) SFC /scannow and did not find corrupted files, I have run diagnostic hard drive and memory test more than twice and passed all each time.
What's the reason for these frequent lock ups? How do I correct this problem?
How To Lock Without Sleeping?

Like there a sleep button on my keyboard, but when i use it, it sleeps, dissconecting me from the net and etc so my downloads will stop.

Num Lock Stays On When PC Is Off
Jan 24, 2009I had this horrible problem of my KB (NUMlock) light staying on after my PC (Vista Ultimate 86x SP1) was completely shut down.
My KB was plugged into the PS2 port. After I took out the PS2 adapter and plugged the cable into a USB port the problem was fixed.
Lock Down Business
May 21, 2008Anyone tell me how to restrict a user on Vista Business to only run one single program? I'm talking no control panel, no search, nothing except my program, log off, shutdown, and restart. Have basically gotten all programs taken off the start menu and am stuck. Need to disable the access to the user account and the search box.

Oct 31, 2008I built two of these systems around may2008, one for me and one for my wife. The only difference between the two is she has 2 sticks of ram (I have 4 but same memory) and her video card is different (EVGA 640-P2-N829-CR GeForce 8800 GTS SSC Edition 640MB). From the get go we both had problems with usb devices not waking up after sleep mode. That was fixed by using a usb to ps2 adapter.
Over the course of the past few weeks both of the systems were freezing (locking up might be a better word since everything stops working mouse, keyboard etc etc) and a hard boot was the only way out of it. This seemed to occur around the same time as the latest vista security update (possibly a coincedance). This week the problem persisted for both pc's and then wednesday night when my wife's went down she hard booted to find that her registry was corrupted (I'm guessing this happened as a result of the hard boot) she put in her windows disk to repair the error only to find that the kernel was then corrupted as well. Windows seemed to fix the kernel problem during repair and she was able to use her system all day the next day with only a minor freeze untill vista installed the update again at which time her pc became hosed once again on reboot..........

The notebook itself is about 14 months old, but was only running for about 3 before it began giving him problems. He shelved it and bought a new one, and recently offered it to me if I could get it running..but post 12 month warrenty and lack of startup/backup discs is giving me hell.
