Windows Welcome Screen & Network Logon Scripts

Sep 23, 2009

this is what Im trying to get resolved !

1. We are currently rolling out Windows Vista (Business) in my company
2. We have a company logon script , which runs after the user logs onto the pc , and displays current company news , as its maps drives and runs app fixes and some windows updates
3. On our current platform , Windows XP , the users can see this - however with Vista the "welcome screen" sits in there and hids the logon script , so users cannot see the "company news" etc.

Is there a way of removing the welcome screen , or indeed making the welcome screen transparent??? This is a big need for my company , and I need to get it working I have been able to edit the weclome screen to get it changed to a picture of my choosing. By the way , this is not the Welcome Center that appears after logon - and enabling/disabling fast user switching or turning off ctrl&alt&del to logon in the policies, as specified by some other forums does not work.

Logon Screen Won't Appear

Mar 4, 2009

I'm having trouble getting to the logon screen today after I shut it down yesterday last night. My friend's son was using my laptop to write up a research report for class and decided to go -exploring- in the system32 folder. He said all he did was move an authui file? I tried using my vista recovery disks, but I can't seem to locate them with all cluttered junk laying around the room(still cleaning).

Enable Alternative Logon Screen

Dec 12, 2006

Microsoft has removed the classic Windows NT style logon screen in Windows Vista. You can no longer hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to get to a logon box where you can type in the username and password. Instead you have to enable the alternative logon screen to restore this capability.

Click on the Start Button, key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.

Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.

Locate and right click on "Interactive logon: Do not display last user name" and select Properties.....

System No Longer Logon Screen Before BSOD

Sep 22, 2008

I have received the Stop 0x0000000A on my recent build. System was stable for ~ 3 weeks. Specs are as follows: Asus P5Q, Q9550, GTX 260 core 216, 8GB 1066MHz Kingston HyperX, 500GB Seagate, 750 Zalman PSU. First few times I was able to review event logs and check for any application/driver installs that might have caused the problem with no results. System no longer goes past logon screen before BSOD. Tried a new MB with updated BIOS. Tried different modules in different RAM slots. All with no success. I am unable to get into the system to apply any update patches or configuration changes past the BIOS.

Windows Logon:do Not Accept The Password

Mar 29, 2008

I recently set a password for my user account in Vista Home Premium, which worked fine when I locked the account and unlocked it again to try it out. After restarting, however, it wouldn't accept the password! There's only my account and a disabled guest account, and I use the password for some of my online accounts, so I know I got the password right. I got back into Windows by using the password reset on my USB-stick, but it's weird... and it gets better! Today I locked the account while I was in the library, and when I got back I couldn't log back in! Switching users, however, and then logging in with the locked account worked... so password and user account are fine, it just doesn't always get accepted.

Windows Security, Logon To POP.EAST.COX.NET

Mar 27, 2008

Bought a Toshiba laptop 10 months ago and everything worked fine. With MS updates (only downloaded defender and Vista related items) things started to happen. Have worked through every problem except can not recieve emails. (Can send with no problem.) Have Cox internet and they determined I can recieve emails through their website so it is Vista interference. Spent two hours yesterday with Toshiba tech service trying to isolate and repair problem. Was not successful.

The problem is this: When Windows mail comes up, or when I hit send and receive, I get a box that says "Windows Security, Logon to POP.EAST.COX.NET" and the appropraite places to put in my Username and Password. When this is done, It just comes back with the same Windows Security box. The Toshiba Rep tried numerous things with accounts and the usual settings, changing passwords, setting up a new account and trying to use that and all resulted in the same "Windows Security" box. He feels that there is something in Windows Security that is out of whack and said to try to delete that program but could not find it to delete it. (I have router so no firewall is not a problem and AVG antivirus.)

AutoAdminLogon = 1
ForceAutoLogon = 1(Have tried enabling this and disabling it and still no luck)

Also tried making sure "IgnoreShiftOverride" was set to zero and no effect.

Send Emails And Windows Security Logon

Nov 1, 2009

I recently activated Windows email and imported my emails from Tiscali. I have checked 'my server requires authentication', and received the following error message: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'test', Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Sorry, your non-local IP address **** is not allowed to send email via me.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F

I then changed the outgoing server as my ISP is currently BT and this is what theeir website says. When I try to send emails then, I get the windows security logon. When I enter my username and password, it just keeps reappearing as if I have entered it incorrectly. I have rechecked the details in properties and I am entering them correctly. When I cancel the logon screen, I get a blank error.

Windows Smart Card Logon On Stand Alone Machine

Mar 23, 2008

I just want to share with you my thoughts about smart card authentication implementation in Vista. I know that smart card logon, also known as strong authentication or two- actor authentication, can be performed on a machine that is connected to a domain. And in Vista SP1 it's been added the support for biometric factor authentication so that, with the appropriate security tokens, strong three-factor authentication can be performed through Kerberos on machines connected to a domain.

Said that I really can't understand why Microsoft doesn't give a standard option, included natively in her oss, to enable strong authentication in stand alone machines that are not connected to a domain. I try to explain in details what I mean. It happens often, for security reasons, that companies have stand alone pcs not connected to the internet and to the company domain. From my point of view achieving a strong authentication on a stand alone machine is not so complicated; Let's think at this scenario:.................

Windows Search 4 Update Profile Service Has Failed The Logon

Apr 2, 2009

A few days ago, Windows Update Automatic updates installed an update on my computer called:

Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)

When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:

The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem

Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load?

Blue Screen Of Death And Network Is Not Working

Apr 11, 2008

I started out with Vista Ultimate on my new PC i get every now and than the famous BSOD. My PC is running 24x7 so most of the times it happens when I'm not sitting behind the pc. in the beginning (2 months ago) it happend about once a day, after a few later updates is only happend about once every 4 or 5 days. The only thing noticable I see is that after the PC rebooted from the BSOD the wireless network is not working (Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 108) that is easily resolved by unplugging the USB connecter and plug it in again.

Yesterday I installed the Windows Updates that where published on April 8th, with the result that the BSOD now occured every 2 hours (not exactly but more or less) and after the third time I decided the uninstall all the security updates from that batch that i could uninstall. There were a few other updates but Office related that I left installed and on security update that I was unable to uninstall (the prereq update for SP1: KB938371). After rebooting the pc it has so far worked perfectly again for approx 20 hours.I have no clue of what migth be causing the problem,

Logon Unsucessful

Mar 23, 2008

I have a little workgroup. I have a printer server running 2000 Pro, 5 PCs running XP, and 2 Laptops running Vista. I can print and access the files in the 2000 Pro server from any XP PC. From both Laptops running vista I can see all the computers in the workgroup, I can also see the files and use the printer of any PC running XP. The problem is between Vista and 2000 Pro. I can access files in the Vista Laptops from the 2000 Pro Server, but I can not see any shared folder or use any printer in the 2000 Pro Server from the Vista Laptops. Each time I try to connect to the 2000 Pro Server from the Vista laptops I get a logon dialog box; I defined in the 2000 Pro server the same users I have in the Vista laptops (I did't do so for the XP PCs and they work just fine) and no matter what user I use to logon (I try to use also the 2000 Pro administrator user) I always get a "Logon Unsucessful" error.

Printer Logon Script

Apr 30, 2008

Domain/AD environment where dcs are Win2k3 and print server is Win 2000 Server. The following logon script is used to map HP Laserjet 4200/4250 printers:

Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection \printserverprintername

This works fine on all our XP clients but not on our Vista clients, even though the printers have been configured with vista drivers on the print server. When logging on to a Vista client, the printers are not installed and the following message is displayed:

"To use the shared printer \printserverprintername, you need to install the printer driver on your computer. If you do not recognize or trust the name and location of the printer, do not install the driver." The user then has the option to Install the driver, but it requires administrative access to do so (our users are not admins).

How Change The User Logon?

Mar 23, 2008

Just starting to look at Vista, but one thing that I haven't figured out is how to change the login. In XP Pro, if you went to user accts in control panel, you could choose to change the way users log on and log off, that way it didn't come up with the list of users on the machine, but worked like a domain login where you had to input your username and password.

I can't figure out how to change this on a stand alone Vista machine. I don't want the list of users, I just want to hit ctrl-alt-del and get a sign on screen where I input the username and password. Is this possible, and how/where do I make this change? Again, it is Vista Ultimate.
