Processor State; Lower Restrict CPU And Gain Battery Life?

Jul 18, 2009

I understand the point of a "maximum processor state." You can lower it to restrict the CPU and gain battery life. The CPU consumes less energy and the fans consume less energy from a cooler thermal load. I've never really understood the need for a "minimum processor state" though or what it even does for that matter.

Battery Life: CD Vs. HD Vs. External HD

Apr 1, 2009

I'm going to be sitting on an airplane for too many hours. I'd like to watch some videos on the laptop and am wondering the best way to maximize battery life. Which uses the least power?

- Playing the DVD in the DVD drive
- Ripping the DVD to the hard drive and playing it from there (if I have enough free disk space)
- Ripping the DVD to an external hard drive and playing it from there
- Ripping the DVD to a big memory key and playing it from there

Loosing Battery Life?

Apr 19, 2008

I've baught a notebook pc. It has T8300 CPU, and Intel GMA 3100 Graphics. The battery has for cells and it says its capacity is 2400mAh. With Windows Vista x64, I did some normal tasks such as surfing the internet a little and some file copying, application installing. But the big problem is the battery life. After fully charged the battery, I could only use about 1 hour and half. I've searched the internet and found that the main culprit is the Aero interface. So, I guess, using Vista Basic when in battery mode, and Aero when in A.C. mode would be more reasonable. Manually changing between them in "Personalization -> Show classic..." is quite a task. Is there any easier way? How do you save battery?

Minimum And Maximum Processor State "Optimal" Setting

Apr 25, 2010

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit and an AMD X2 Dual-Core QL-60 processor (1.9 GHz).

In Vista Power options, there are 2 settings under Processor Power Management: Minimum and Maximum Processor State.

What are the optimal settings for these options? I fully understand that one might choose to have a lower maximum state when running on battery power to prolong battery life. I can think of no reason to have the maximum state below 100% when running plugged-in (unless, of course, one is trying to save electricity, keep the laptop cooler...)

How does minimum state work and what is the optimal setting? I know the default is 5% (but I've done a lot of Googling and cannot find an educated reason why 5% is the default.) Would it be correct for me to presume that if I set it at (say) 5%, then the processor will never operate below 5% of its capability (or whatever # of MHz is closest to 5% capacity) and will run all the way to the maximum specified state where needed? In other words, am I simply giving the processor the leverage to pick whatever power is required between its minimum and maximum specified states?

If my above assumption is correct and the processor will pick the optimum speed within the min/max range, why would I ever increase the minimum above 5% - and better still, why wouldn't I go right down to 1%? (Having said that, I read in one post that processors don't run in relative percentages - but 500Mhz, 800Mhz or whatever - so if my processor can only go as low as (say) 600MHz and my max is 1,900, then I guess if I set my minimum anywhere between 1 and 32%, it would never go below 600Mhz...)

Nvidia Restrict Mointor Resolution Options

Sep 19, 2008

Vista and NVidia are very restrictive about EDID and restrict available Monitor Resolutions, While ATI and NVidia have made options available for over-riding available resolution values...Some may find this resets or your real maximum resolution is completely unavailable

My "PnP Monitor" would get reset to 1024x768 every so often and was a pain in the *** to get the NVidia panel to force the proper resolution even though the NVidia control panel recognizes the display and names ir correctly...I found this Overclockers Article about removing two pins to remove EDID transmitted information...I was shocked to find it does exactly what you want, It will allow you to set any resolution/refreshrate you want! I dont recommend doing this on your monitor cable encase you permanently destroy your monitor cable!!!!!! Go out and buy some DVI adapters... there less than $5!! How to: Set whatever res I want to my monitor? (Disable Edid) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net......

Factory State Recovery

May 2, 2009

I have made a mistake and I am struggling to get out of this mess, I hope Shawn or someone who experienced this problem can help me out.

I was doing the Factory state recovery using Alt+F10 while booting in my Acer Aspire laptop, everything was fine until the "Acer Launch" window appeared. The last process Install eRecovery solution is not completing. The AL window just sitting in the middle of the screen and couldn't be moved. I tried to disable it from startup, msconfig window vanishes behind the Acer Launch window.

I think the cause of this problem is I forgot to create the 2nd(D: data) partition prior to starting the Recovery process.

My original set up was like this:

EISA hidden partition

C: system partition

D:data partition

I have deleted the D: partition and extended the C partition

I have created Recovery disc but I don't have Vista installation DVD as my machine is OEM version of Vista on it. I do have an Anytime upgrade DVD which came with the laptop when I bought.

Computer In A Low Power State

Jan 29, 2009

I put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.

I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.

Hibernation Sleep State Until Reactivated

Aug 1, 2009

Forgive my apparent ignorance about this, but I've posted in recent months about my machine waking up on its own while in Hibernation. However, it only happened seldomly --ninety to ninety-five percent of the time it just stayed in its Hibernation sleep state until I reactivated it. Well, that's no longer the case --it's waking up on its own more frequently, and for that reason is beginning to make me a bit suspicious. I should add here that my machine was attacked twice in the last week from an IP Address in China --my firewall intercepted it, and I did a search on the address and saw that a number of people here have been reporting and complaining about that same individual. So my question is this: to what extent does my firewall protect my machine when it's in Hibernation, and can it be woken up by a nosy guy in China that's trying to hack into peoples' machines here in the States?

Consider Life Without The Power Of Speech

May 19, 2009

Mankind uses speech extensively to communicate. Imagine how your life would be affected if you did not have the power of speech. You would carry your handy dandy keyboard and instant printer around with you daily. If a friend were about to step off the curb and get run over by traffic, you would frantically whip out your keyboard, type WATCH OUT! in big bold letters, and wave it in front of his face. Imagine your frustration at the local grocery store, as you and the checker exchange notes about the on-special price of an item, while the line builds up
behind you..............

Circles Of Life And Death

Jun 13, 2009

Is anyone as tired as I am of staring at the Vista Spinning Circle of Microsoft Incompetence? From boot-up to shut-down and everything in between I am utterly tired of staring at this spinning circle. Vista, SP1, SP2: nothing changes. The best anyone can say about Vista is that at least it works, sort of. The computer I write this on boots to XP, Vista and Win 7: only the middle OS spins and spins and spins waiting to do anything while the hard drive thrashes like a an out of balance clothes dryer.

Vista apologists need not respond. If you only run Vista on a machine you cannot see how utterly lousy it really is and what you are missing in performance from your hardware. Linux propeller heads can sit in a corner and spin their beanies. Some of us have to accomplish real work instead of endless futzing with an OS. On this machine Win7 has become my default OS and I will gladly pay for the final version when it goes on sale so I can recover the hard drive space wasted on Vista. The performance of the XP virtualized OS in Win7 is nearly as fast as Vista on its own.

If Microsoft had any honor (or business acumen) they would offer Win7 for a limited time as the free service pack it should be for users stuck with the utter kludge that is Vista. However Microsoft has demonstrated it would prefer to pay billions to the EU in fines rather than treat its customers fairly. It is indisputable that dead and buried General Motors executives from the 60s and 70s psychically control Steve Balmer. There is no other rational explanation for the performance of Microsoft under his direction.

Restarting And Rebooting Can Not Lower Tempature

Nov 10, 2009

One of my Intel Core 2 Quad processor cores has a temperature consistently lower than the other 3 cores, WHY? I have a question. I need to know the reason why one of my cores (Core 2) is running about 3-4 degrees below the temperatures of the other 3 cores on my Intel Core 2 Quad processor. Restarting and rebooting seems not to help, it is always the same core with the lower temperature. Is there something wrong with that particular core or something overly defective with the processor itself??? It rarely ever fluctuates and stays at 33 degrees Celsius. The other core temperatures are around 36-37 degrees at rest/idle and do frequently go up when an action is performed on the computer.

Please let me know what is going on with this consistent core 2 temperature and please provide me with a reason why this is happening. Is it something that is beginning to go with this processor? Is there anything that can be done about it to get all four (4) core temperatures in balance.

Half Life: GOTY Edition

Apr 20, 2009

I bought the Half Life: Game of the Year Edition off of Amazon a few days ago. I didn't go the Steam or Source route, because I need a game I can play via LAN and not have to be connnected to the internet. I'm not 100% on how either of those work, but after talking to a few guys, I decided to go with what I know.

So I got the game today, and installed it without issue. I was excited and went to open the game to give it a run through. Then. it happened. The first error said something to the affect "you only have -6242.00K of physical memory, Half Life requires 16MB to run." Now I have 4GB of RAM. and wasn't running anything else, so I didn't know what was going on. I looked around and found out that if you have over 2GB it rolls over or something. Solution? Either run it in XP Compatibility mode or shut off the DPE off for Half Life.

After trying both seperatley and even at the same time, nothing works. I don't get the error message any more, but the screen flashes like it's going to start running, then the screen goes black. and that's it. CTRL+ALT+DEL, hl.exe is "Not Responding". That's all that happens.

I've tried restarting the computer, I've tried uninstalling it, then putting the setup.exe in compatibility mode then running it (also stops responding) and nothing works. Can anyone offer up another course of action or help me out?
