My laptop is Dell inspiron 1420, home premium 32 bit. It's about 5 months old. It came with :-
1.) OS reinstallment DVD
2.) Dell Drivers and Utilities disk
3.) Microsoft Works 8.5 disk
4.) Trend Micro Internet Security ( but I have changed to McAfee since)
It's only 5 months ago that I learned how to use computer by reading and asking questions. So please be step-by-step in showing me how to.
I have made a mistake and I am struggling to get out of this mess, I hope Shawn or someone who experienced this problem can help me out.
I was doing the Factory state recovery using Alt+F10 while booting in my Acer Aspire laptop, everything was fine until the "Acer Launch" window appeared. The last process Install eRecovery solution is not completing. The AL window just sitting in the middle of the screen and couldn't be moved. I tried to disable it from startup, msconfig window vanishes behind the Acer Launch window.
I think the cause of this problem is I forgot to create the 2nd(D: data) partition prior to starting the Recovery process.
My original set up was like this:
EISA hidden partition
C: system partition
D:data partition
I have deleted the D: partition and extended the C partition
I have created Recovery disc but I don't have Vista installation DVD as my machine is OEM version of Vista on it. I do have an Anytime upgrade DVD which came with the laptop when I bought.
In Win XP I had an icon in my quick launch bar to return to desktop from anywhere. How can I get such an icon/command in Win 7?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI put my computer put it into what I think is standby mode, the one that "puts your computer in a low power state so you can quickly resume working" (I remember the text, but not the specific name lol). The monitor turned off and I left the room before hearing the computer shut off. I returned to my computer some 12 hours later and it was still on with the HD access light solid red, and with the monitor off and the power button blinking, waiting for a signal. I said to myself, boy thats weird. I held the power button in and shut it down. I pushed to power button to reboot and nothing happened. It didn't turn on.
I pulled the power cord from the back of the power supply and drained any remaining juice from my rig, then plugged it back in, pushed the power button, and voila, on it came. It then booted up like it would if it were fully in standby / sleep / hibernate mode and the power went out starting up with 'resuming windows' and then going insanely slow as it tries to return all programs to the state they were in when the power failed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedForgive my apparent ignorance about this, but I've posted in recent months about my machine waking up on its own while in Hibernation. However, it only happened seldomly --ninety to ninety-five percent of the time it just stayed in its Hibernation sleep state until I reactivated it. Well, that's no longer the case --it's waking up on its own more frequently, and for that reason is beginning to make me a bit suspicious. I should add here that my machine was attacked twice in the last week from an IP Address in China --my firewall intercepted it, and I did a search on the address and saw that a number of people here have been reporting and complaining about that same individual. So my question is this: to what extent does my firewall protect my machine when it's in Hibernation, and can it be woken up by a nosy guy in China that's trying to hack into peoples' machines here in the States?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to open some of my programs I get the error message, "The pipe state is invalid". whenever I leave the computer in Sleep mode and there after retrieve it, my Samsung Printer ML-2240 series stops working. When I give a command, "Find a Printer", the error message appears "The pipe state is invalid". This happens so often that I get very annoyed and am unable to use the computer to its optimum capacity.

When after putting my computer in sleep mode the bluetooth mouse does not reconnect. The only thing I can do is pull the batteries out of the mouse and put them back in and only then it decides to reconnect.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with the latest 64-bit MS Wireless IntelliMouse drivers. When logging onto the computer after completely shutting down the computer (not sleep mode) the mouse reconnects just fine.

The CPU consumes less energy and the fans consume less energy from a cooler thermal load. I've never really understood the need for a "minimum processor state" though or what it even does for that matter.

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. In Vista Power options, there are 2 settings under Processor Power Management: Minimum and Maximum Processor State.
What are the optimal settings for these options? I fully understand that one might choose to have a lower maximum state when running on battery power to prolong battery life. I can think of no reason to have the maximum state below 100% when running plugged-in (unless, of course, one is trying to save electricity, keep the laptop cooler...)
How does minimum state work and what is the optimal setting? I know the default is 5% (but I've done a lot of Googling and cannot find an educated reason why 5% is the default.) Would it be correct for me to presume that if I set it at (say) 5%, then the processor will never operate below 5% of its capability (or whatever # of MHz is closest to 5% capacity) and will run all the way to the maximum specified state where needed? In other words, am I simply giving the processor the leverage to pick whatever power is required between its minimum and maximum specified states?
If my above assumption is correct and the processor will pick the optimum speed within the min/max range, why would I ever increase the minimum above 5% - and better still, why wouldn't I go right down to 1%? (Having said that, I read in one post that processors don't run in relative percentages - but 500Mhz, 800Mhz or whatever - so if my processor can only go as low as (say) 600MHz and my max is 1,900, then I guess if I set my minimum anywhere between 1 and 32%, it would never go below 600Mhz...)
ok im tryimg to restore my dell inspiron 1525 laptop to factory settings.(also i run vista home premium 32bit). I have tried the f8 advancted options and people say i should see a command to restore to factory settings but it dosent show up for me. can anyone help me out
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had a HP PC running windows vista home basic, it crashed and was not able to boot in vista. Startup repair or safe mode did not work, so inorder to save data I installed vista business on top of it. The data is recovered and now when I try to boot to the factory restore it does not work, noticed in msconfig under boot.ini tab there is no boot record to the factory restore partition. Is there a way I can add in the record so that If I press F11 my PC will boot into the factory restore partition?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWe've bought an HP 2710p tablet and built up the pre-installed Vista Business OS to work on our network. putting domain, installing bespoke software, taking the pre-installed crap off, etc. A user had it and was working fine for a few weeks and his story was that it was running low on battery, so he plugged it in, then went away for a bit. He comes back and finds the thing re-installing itself to factory settings!
I found that hard to believe, but upon taking re-possession of it, that's exactly what's it done - seemingly no questions asked! A crash is one thing, but a complete automatic factory recover! Have to say we're not best pleased. Why would it do that and how do i stop if from doing anything on its own terms again?
my D drive is in red and apparently full. i am not getting the warning sign yet but was curious if I can somehow just delete this drive. yes i know that it is a recovery drive. we do have a recovery disk handy. when i click on it it says "warning this area of your hard drive comntains files used for your PC Recovery. Do not delete or alter....." so if I were to delete it will is mess my computer up? do i really need to back it up to a cd since i already have a recovery disk? is there a way to just keep the drive but not have the full red bar there?

I then purchased Vista Business and installed without making a backup/recovery disk. I now want to put it back to it's factory condition and get Vista Home Premium back on it but can not seem to find how to do it. There is still 4.46GB of HP_RECOVERY on D:/ that you can not see what is on it. How get it back to factory. I have tried pressing F11 repeatedly on startup - that did nothing, tried repeatedly pressing F8 as well - couldn't work that one out and just do not know what to do now. When I installed Business it has taken away the Recovery Manager and I don't know what to do.

I tried using them today and HP Recovery manager freezes at 33% during the re-install process. Why is it doing this? It's driving me crazy.

The kids use I-tunes, I have folders of music in different formats ( I think), we have Kodak and Olympus picture folders, old email in two different identities, and on and on. Is there a step-by-step on how to do this correctly, so I don't lose stuff and I am able to find and save everything I need? I'm figuring I will burn everything to a DVD or two, but I don't know....

My computer has numerous problems: it won’t load certain websites, windows updates won’t work, I can’t load or re-download windows defender, I can’t download software from Microsoft.com…..and so on and so on. My last resort is to restore the system to factory settings however that too presents a problem. The files in my HP_Recovery drive have been deleted and the recovery disks that I created were lost when I moved. View 6 Replies View RelatedI was talking to Western Digital today and they gave me an RMA to return a "defective" 1 gig hard drive that sounded like a garbage truck for the past 4-5 days. I could hear the drive in the next room while watching television. I'm glad to say I don't have to return the drive. Today I downloaded the beta of Microsoft Security Essentials for testing purposes. I uninstalled Avast and installed MSE. After a reboot (I always do this after an install) the hard drive was quiet! The drive had previously sounded like the heads were slamming into the stops. What a noise. I also checked my processes in Task Manager and found that one Avast process had over 22 **BILLION** read accesses within 1/2 hour after booting up. Anyway, all now seems well. I guess it was an Avast update that started my main hard drive going spastic.

The restore discs that Gateway sent me no longer work (I've had to factory reset previously) and the OS disc that Gateway sent me isn't reading in my T-6835 laptop. Since I reset my hard drive previously, I don't have Gateway Recovery Manager. I do have a recovery partition though, but I can't access it for some reason or another. I have tried tapping alt + f10, f10, and r at the beginning but to no avail.

Say, I go from the Vista premium 64bit that was installed in the laptops stock form, to Xp 64bit from a offical OS disc, back to the Vista 64bit factory install.... lol follow that? It sounds way better inside my head then it sounds read out loud. Maybe thats where it should of stayed...?
Also, the Vista key that is used on my laptop from the factory installed OS, can it be used If I were to try and use the same OS to do a clean install, but from an offical cd? Basicly, would my key that I am currently using, work if I use it on a OS disc install? I just want to make sure I can get this thing back to "fresh out the box" stands if need be. For the windows 7 update, or to return shortly if I can not get issues resolved on my own.
I have used my HP m7763w with Vista Home Premium for more than 2 years now, and finally got to the point of having to use my rescue CDs to reformat the HD and reset to factory setting. Unfortunately, I get frequent error messages now, and missing file notices, and Windows Update refuses to work. I understand that the old factory settings are way outdated by now, but what am I supposed to do to get it all working right, if Windows Update fails?
