Factory Restore Does Not Work
Dec 28, 2009
I had a HP PC running windows vista home basic, it crashed and was not able to boot in vista. Startup repair or safe mode did not work, so inorder to save data I installed vista business on top of it. The data is recovered and now when I try to boot to the factory restore it does not work, noticed in msconfig under boot.ini tab there is no boot record to the factory restore partition. Is there a way I can add in the record so that If I press F11 my PC will boot into the factory restore partition?

I am using a HP Pavilion dv6000 running Windows Vista Home Premium. My computer has numerous problems: it won’t load certain websites, windows updates won’t work, I can’t load or re-download windows defender, I can’t download software from Microsoft.com…..and so on and so on. I have searched and searched the internet and tried many solutions from many different forums with none of them working. My last resort is to restore the system to factory settings however that too presents a problem. The files in my HP_Recovery drive have been deleted and the recovery disks that I created were lost when I moved. I know it’s a long shot, but is there any way I can restore my system to factory settings without the HP_Recovery partition or recovery disks?

I need to do a complete factory reset on my Gateway. The restore discs that Gateway sent me no longer work (I've had to factory reset previously) and the OS disc that Gateway sent me isn't reading in my T-6835 laptop. Since I reset my hard drive previously, I don't have Gateway Recovery Manager. I do have a recovery partition though, but I can't access it for some reason or another. I have tried tapping alt + f10, f10, and r at the beginning but to no avail.

A few weeks ago my computer died from a windows update it automatically did, i managed to get back onto the computer by booting my OS disk to save my files and now i need to completly restore my computer back to factory settings. I Don't want to restore it back to a certain point, or repair my system as i log on, which is all i seem to be able to find in other posts, i just want to completly restore it back to day 1. F11 doesnt work when i turn my computer on (yes im doing it right and ive tried it LOTS of times), F8 brings up a screeen i dont want, booting from teh OS disk just boots the pc normally and alt F10 doesnt seem to be bringing the page that i need up, just an editing page.

I was recently given a Medion desktop pc (its a second hand one), and i want to recover it back to factory settings. I got nothing with the pc, no disks or anything. It has one HDD which is partitioned into two drives, one of which is called "recover" and contains what i assume to be files that will reset the pc to factory settings and install all of the orginal content again. This drive has no .exe file in it, or any other file extention that i can do anything with. The appears to be no program that i can find that will recover the pc.
how i restore it factory settings? Confused_ms p.s. The DVD-rom is not working at the min, so even if i did have a disk i wouldnt be able to use it. p.p.s. The pc has 2.8ghz processer (pentium D), 250gb HDD, 1GB RAM, Vista home prem OS Btw, the pc also has no internet connection, however i do have another computor so i can download things and transfer them over. (i cant set up my internet connection because they drivers i need to run the wireless adapter are on a CD and i currently cant run Cd's) edit: I think i might be making progress (assumin im heading on the right track?), when i press F10 during start-up i get the following come up on screen: EDIT BOOT OPTIONS Edit Windows boot options for: Microsoft windows Vista Path: windowssystem32winload.exe Partition: 1 Hard Disk: cb352c78 [ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN ] Then is says ENTER=submit ESC=Cancel Now am i right in thinking that the partition needs to be changed to 2? if so how to i do it, becasue it wont simply let me change it as the only thing i have acess to is the bit in [](thats the only bit i can change or type in).

Western Digital SATA Hard Drive - 640GB
Vista Home Premium - 64Bit
Gateway desktop.
Would someone know of any utility or method to restore a SATA hard drive's factory full capacity size? During partitioning my drive, it went from 595GB (640GB Drive) to only 32GB. Since it is a 64-Bit system, I can't find a utility to restore the drive's full capacity.

My OS is Vista Home Premium 64 bit. On a couple of occasions I've tried to action "System Restore". So far I've met with NO success. It seems to go through the motions OK ( if you believe what you see on the moniter) but when the comp restarts I am bluntly informed that restoration has NOT taken place. Doesn't seem a lot of point having a facility like this when it simply will NOT work! Is this some sort of glitch with Vista 64 bit?

I recently bought a laptop that did not come with any restore disc. I plan to create a back up of my current vista so in case XP somehow fails, I can return to vista. My question is, how do I create a back up that will work when I am on XP? I know the Vista "system restore" does not work on XP. I read somewhere else that I can copy paste my windows folder from C: drive directly onto an external harddrive, but if XP fails how do I put that onto my computer?

System Restore will not restore my HP laptop to ANY point in the past. I get a message which says it encountered an unspecified error (VISTA). Also, I tried to access System Restore in safe mode and can't find it. Can someone tell me what to try? My Device Manager doesn't indicate any problems.

I have task scheduler set up to create a restore point once a day. The history panel shows that the restore point is created on schedule, yet it does not show up in the system restore panel under system properties/system protection. Nor does the free space on the hard drive shrink by a gig or so, as I'd expect. All the settings in task scheduler seem to be correct, and I can create restore points manually. It's just that the automatic feature does not work. Has anyone experienced a problem like this? I'm using Vista Home Premium. Oodles of space allocated for restore points.

You have bought a PC / Laptop which came with a preinstalled Copy of Windows Vista (OEM Software) and your system won't boot up anymore. trying out options from F8 Boot Menu don't solve the problem. you don't have a recovery CD/DVD. you don't have any backups (or you just can't access them). system restore doesn't work / has been deactivated. you simply want to do a fresh install of Vista.Your system provider / Computer Manufacturer (Acer, HP, Toshiba...) may have set up a hidden partition on your harddisk(s) with a recovery disk of Vista on it. This partition is not visible in Windows Explorer nor in My Computer/Device Manager. The hidden partition's volume label (address) is most commonly X: To access it, please follow these steps*: Press ALT + F10 during your Computer-Logo-Flashscreen at bootup. You are then offered a choice to do a full recovery of Vista from the hidden partiton (in this case X: or access data on a Disc.....

I am currently using Vista Home Premium. I had a problem with one of the current updates and had to use system restore. After the restore everything worked fine except that Mc Afee Security would no longer function, with the exception of the Firewall. Mc Afee indicated that the secuerity center was more than 30 days out of date. My system restore was set for less than 24 hours. Is this a normal situation and is there any way to prevent it in the future?

I had a power failure today, and was completely pleased with Vista SP1, about to write a favorable review over the previous Ubuntu install that was on this machine until the power went out. Now it's a brick. Restore doesn't work, and I'll have to reinstall everything...why build restore points and backups if they don't work? All I got was chkdsk autorunning and a blank screen... total BS.

This is a tough one for me to explain but I will try very hard. I guess this started around late summer 09. I turned on my computer and it would run chkdsk over and over again. I let it go over night once and it was still scanning the hard drive over and over. Around Christmas time I reinstalled vista and still it would run chkdsk on every boot. Only this time, it ran once and then vista loaded fine. It would stop responding often and run slow but it was better. I manually turned off chkdsk but it made the computer run worse over time.
It would just not do anything so i would have to hold on the power button and turn it back on. The hard drive light will just stay on and the drive will sound a little different than usual. No clicking or metal on metal noise, just a different type of busy noise until you open something. Also you could use the disk clean up but not the defrag. It will say you should defrag volume so i would click defrag now. It would just show you the spinning blue circle and say analyzing but then say you should degrag volume again. So it won't defrag either. System restore also does not work.........

I'm sure this problem is easy to solve. It's just that I can't see it.Because Vista has been causing me so many problems (blue crash screens, system restore doesn't work etc) I must restore to factory settings, wiping the c: disk and starting again. I have backed up all files on an external drive. The problem is that I can't see how to import all my mail accounts and mail history back into Windows Mail which will have been reloaded from new.

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

I recently added some new hardware to my 6 month old computer (2x2 gigs of ram and a 1T hard drive). I had my computer off and unplugged, added the ram and hard drive, then plugged my computer back in. I started my computer and while Vista was loading I all of a sudden got a BSOD saying: Stop: C000021a {fatal system error} The initial session processor system terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0Xc0000001 0X00100490) The system has been shut down After a few more tries of starting it normally, I tried it once with safe mode and it stopped loaded at "crcdisk.sys" and after a bit it would BSOD to the same screen After starting it up again I selected the option to run the comouter with a previous setting that had a succesful boot, and it went to an error saying that the NLS data was missing or corrupt with an error saying "0Xc0000225"
After I went back to the screen where you have the option to start in safe mode or normal mode, and it said at the top that Windows had failed to load and that if it was due to a hardware change to put in the Vista CD and click on fix my computer, so I tried that. After it tried to fix itself it said that it couldnt automatically fix it. I tried doing a system restore to several differnt points which all didnt work because the system restore couldnt find the file "0X80070002" If anyone has a solution to help me I would be very grateful. I was thinking that I could try re-installing vista, but I dont want to lose all of my personal files, so could I just install vista on my other hard drive, look on my original hard drive, and from there move all of my personal files?

I have made a mistake and I am struggling to get out of this mess, I hope Shawn or someone who experienced this problem can help me out.
I was doing the Factory state recovery using Alt+F10 while booting in my Acer Aspire laptop, everything was fine until the "Acer Launch" window appeared. The last process Install eRecovery solution is not completing. The AL window just sitting in the middle of the screen and couldn't be moved. I tried to disable it from startup, msconfig window vanishes behind the Acer Launch window.
I think the cause of this problem is I forgot to create the 2nd(D: data) partition prior to starting the Recovery process.
My original set up was like this:
EISA hidden partition
C: system partition
D:data partition
I have deleted the D: partition and extended the C partition
I have created Recovery disc but I don't have Vista installation DVD as my machine is OEM version of Vista on it. I do have an Anytime upgrade DVD which came with the laptop when I bought.

We've bought an HP 2710p tablet and built up the pre-installed Vista Business OS to work on our network. putting domain, installing bespoke software, taking the pre-installed crap off, etc. A user had it and was working fine for a few weeks and his story was that it was running low on battery, so he plugged it in, then went away for a bit. He comes back and finds the thing re-installing itself to factory settings!
I found that hard to believe, but upon taking re-possession of it, that's exactly what's it done - seemingly no questions asked! A crash is one thing, but a complete automatic factory recover! Have to say we're not best pleased. Why would it do that and how do i stop if from doing anything on its own terms again?

Do not delete or alter....." so if I were to delete it will is mess my computer up? do i really need to back it up to a cd since i already have a recovery disk? is there a way to just keep the drive but not have the full red bar there?
