I had a power failure today, and was completely pleased with Vista SP1, about to write a favorable review over the previous Ubuntu install that was on this machine until the power went out. Now it's a brick. Restore doesn't work, and I'll have to reinstall everything...why build restore points and backups if they don't work?All I got was chkdsk autorunning and a blank screen... total BS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was going to get the Antec 900, but I went with the Cooler Master 690.. and I'm very happy that I did.. cuz my brother got the Antec 900 and it's been nothing but a Nightmare, wire management blows, the Power buttons are Ghetto.. So here it is, When you take the top off.. the way the power buttons are attached are very cheaply done, and then they are Hot Glued on with a cheap glue that snaps off very easy.. or it was on his, someone was sleeping on the job with Quality Control..
so, at some point of his build he broke the power button.. it doesn't work. so we've tried to re-attach it.. and it's not workin very well, the entire module is very cheap, he was very careful and personally I think it was broken from the Very beginning... If anyone has an Old Antec 900 case.. or parts to there antec 900.. or anything like that.. Please feel free to PM me. I'm hoping to find the entire top part.. with the top 200mm fan. the power button and reset button and the I/O ports.. The Entire top. if anyone has an old 900 and would like to sell some parts, or make a lil money on there old tower they don't use.
I was taking a nap and when I woke up the power supply was dead. I replaced the power supply and have it all hooked up, but I now can't get my computer to boot up. The light on the MOBO is on, and everything seems to be good. One thing I noticed is the CPU fan no longer goes on where it had been previously plugged in. However, if I plug it in elsewhere, the fan works. So, now the question seems to be, is the CPU bad or is something wrong with the MOBO? Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can test either or any other thoughts on troubleshooting?

Also, I tried to access System Restore in safe mode and can't find it. Can someone tell me what to try? My Device Manager doesn't indicate any problems.

It's just that I can't see it.Because Vista has been causing me so many problems (blue crash screens, system restore doesn't work etc) I must restore to factory settings, wiping the c: disk and starting again. I have backed up all files on an external drive. The problem is that I can't see how to import all my mail accounts and mail history back into Windows Mail which will have been reloaded from new.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Home Premium, and after installing an update to my ethernet card that killed my internet connection, I decided to do a system restore. After the restore, and reboot, Vista came up with an error/blue screen, and told me to insert my install disc and perform a repair. I did that, but of course, my DVD-Rom ate the Vista disc, destroying it.
So, after rebooting once more, I get no prompt to repair. I now get a black screen, where I can see my cursor and can move it with the mouse, but absolutely no response from the OS. All I see from the Vista is when it's booting, I get the green progress bar, but after that disappears it goes right to the black screen with moveable cursor. Does anyone have a clue what's happened? With my DVD drive eating discs, and unable to boot the OS, I'm really at a loss of what to do.
If someone could direct me to where that information might normally reside in Home Premium Vista.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.
I have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
i had to do a system restore which i've done before with no problems, this time however when the comp started back up we had a power cut and now when i turn on comp all i get is a black screen even starting in safe mode etc all i get is the microsoft logo at the bottom of the screen and it just goes back to the black screen, the only thing working is the cursor can anyone.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI unplug AC and USB devices in order to work outside my working station... After some time, when I replug the laptop to AC and replug the USB devices they don't work... No mouse, no printer, no smart card, no usb at all. Also I can't restart the computer as it freezes, so I have to shut it down "violently". I noticed that this always occurs when the battery is under 50 %. But sometimes it happens even at higher percentages. I've installed sp2, I've disabled the USB selective suspend both in power options and in registry.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy ASUS laptop is nearly a year old & running Vista home premium, but it`s never kept restore points for longer than two or three days.
I recently started the Volulme Shadow copy, which was stopped, & set it to manual; later I tried automatic, but none of that seems to work. Still no restore points kept for longer than three days.
I`m not dual booting with windows XP, & this is the amount of space allocated to restore points:
Used shadow copy storage space: 924.293 MB
Allocated shadow copy storage space: 1.172 GB
Maximum shadow copy storage space: 4.434 GB
I don`t use diskeeper defragmenting tool at all, I use the disk clean up & defragmenter that came with windows vista. I do have Ccleaner, which has a disk cleaner & registry cleaner. I practically don`t use the registry cleaner, & sometimes I use the disk cleaner, but I haven`t used it at all for the last couple of months, & the problem persists. I use as well: Spybot-search & destroy; Ad-aware & my antivirus, which is Mc Afee, does defragment & clean up on a schedule.
I used to have the Norton Antivirus for three months last year, but not anymore, but I realized yesterday that I still haven`t uninstall the Symantec liveUpdate. I don`t have any other Symantec products running on my laptop.
The other day i was sitting next to my mate who was making notes on his MacBook. The cool thing i saw on that Mac was that, when not in use for a few seconds, the screen saver or the power saver doesn't appear, but first the brightness of the screen got to its minimum and then the screen went into power saver mode.
Is there a way to make my Vista do that as well? So instead of a screen saver, it would just turn the brightness to its lowest point and after a few minutes, it would go completely dark to save energy?
I just bought a Hp 8300 with the Windows media center running Vista. If I try and watch the TV, it will pause and need to restart the computer to use the computer. It just locks up. Hp Tech support had me install new drivers, then they had me do the reinstall to original settings.. It worked until I tried to record, then it locked up again and the TV doesn't work again. It will lock up after watching the TV about 15 seconds. I returned the computer and got another one, it does the same thing, Tech support told me I had a bad tuner (on 2 computers?) they sent me a new tuner, that didn't work. Then they said I needed to reinstall the factory settings from the disk, they sent that to me and that did not fix the problem. The computer did not come with a new monitor and I am using a Sony flatscreen, its about 4 years old. Is that my problem? I'm going to take the computer to the store and let them see if they can make it work with a new monitor.

Vista search doesn't seem to work at all on my computer. Indexing Options (from the Control Panel) says that 34,894 items are indexed and Indexing Options lists Microsoft Office Outlook, Offline Files, and Start Menu and Users in the Included Locations and the Exclude column shows "Default" Opposite Users in the Included locations. If I go to Advanced in Indexing Options and check various common file types like .doc and .xls they are marked (the box is checked) for index file names and contents. if I go to a folder that has a bunch of .xls file and type in the search box the start of a file name that I can plainly see in the list of files in that folder, the full list of files in that folder collapses to a list of one extraneous file that isn't at all what I'm looking for. I have just re-built
the index and still have the sam problem. Needless to say search for file content doesn't work either - since I can't even search for file names.
if I click on Start > Control Panel -- click on Programs -- under Programs and features -- click on. Turn Windows features on or off" -- the box next to ???Indexing Service??? is unchecked. That doesn't make sense to me because the Indexing Options has indexed things.
I just did a clean install on my dell with vista home premium (32). Everything works fine except no music CDs, DVDs, or software CDs will autoplay. I've changed the settings in CP to different selections and it still doesn't work.

I keep getting an error message (Microsoft Windows Fax and Scan Has Stopped Working) and then it shuts down without any chance to look at Tools. The only changes that have been made that I know of is a bunch of MS Security updates that had been failing for some unkown reason. I had to update them manually one at a time.

WinRAR It just doesn't work!!!Everytime I try to extract files it says : " No archives found" or that it cannot create folder. I installed it all over again but it still doesn't work! BTW I have MS Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 OriginPro 8 Cannot open a file that is not in the folder that was created when the program was installed. Well, that wouldn't be a major problem if I could open that folder or, for that matter, if that folder really existed outsidse the program.
I have onboard sound with an asus m2n sli deluxe mobo. I am dual-booting xp and vista and my speakers work on my xp partition. I have them set as the default device and when I test them they work but when I try to listen to music or any audio it doesn't work.
