Now it's a brick. Restore doesn't work, and I'll have to reinstall everything...why build restore points and backups if they don't work? All I got was chkdsk autorunning and a blank screen... total BS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't track down the exact thing that changed, but many of my internet plug-ins (QuickTime, Silverlight, Air) won't work properly. I will install the plug-in, then when I go to a site that requires it, it says it's not installed, despite clearly being the Program registry.
When I use QuickTime, I can go to various sites that have QT movies and they load fine, but if I go to Apple.com, it says I need to grab the newest QuickTime. Silverlight apps won't load at all. Any time I go to Adobe's marketplace for AIR apps, despite having one running, it says that I need to install Air. This is in both IE7 and Firefox.
So I am goofy and want my Vista Ultimate to play my own wav files instead of the ones it came with. but they simply don't play at all. I have done everything I know how to get this to work. I go to control panel sounds and the sound tab and have put the .wav files i want to use into the C:/Windows/Media folder and am able to select them through the sound menu... but the test option plays nothing for my wavs and it doesnt do anything when the system is supposed to make said sound...
I even checked all the properties to make sure they were the same the only differance I can see is that the sound files that work are owned by the system and the ones that dont are owned by administraitor. I do know how to change the ownership of files through the properties menu but even in Administraitor mode there is no option for system... I do not however think that it is the cause... is it that vista just doesnt want you using your own sound files?
i installed Windows vista from xp. The sound don't work anymore. In the device status it says this device is working properly. What should i do to fix this? Please help me.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Home Basic, and randomly my internet browsers just totally stop trying to connect and just spit out error messages, but everything else still works (usually). MSN, Steam, my antivirus updates on time, everything that isn't HTTP pretty much. The internet browsers will last anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours before keeling over. I've done a pretty thorough Google search on this and I'm at least not alone, but in another sense I am...
A lot of people have said "oh I disabled/uninstalled ZoneAlarm or Bitdefender or so and so a program and it worked" but I don't run those. Never have had ZA or anything on my computer. The only program I have in common with the most common ones is Spybot S&D, and I disabled that on startup and sure enough, didn't work. I do not have any Vista service packs, I don't think. Nothing explicitly called that anyway. I have a bunch of updates that I installed when I got the computer, so I can't uninstall SP1 to fix it since I don't think I even have it.
There are websites that i visit that dont work right and i dont know if it is Vista or just my computer. I just got this computer, it is brand new. My old computer had XP. There is a site called BabyCenter.com. When i comment in the forums, it wont let me change my font size, color or anything. I could do all of that on XP. And when i go to game websites like playtopia.com, the game will load, but it wont show up. Is this Vista doing this, and if so how can i fix it??

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and after installing an update to my ethernet card that killed my internet connection, I decided to do a system restore. After the restore, and reboot, Vista came up with an error/blue screen, and told me to insert my install disc and perform a repair. I did that, but of course, my DVD-Rom ate the Vista disc, destroying it.
So, after rebooting once more, I get no prompt to repair. I now get a black screen, where I can see my cursor and can move it with the mouse, but absolutely no response from the OS. All I see from the Vista is when it's booting, I get the green progress bar, but after that disappears it goes right to the black screen with moveable cursor. Does anyone have a clue what's happened? With my DVD drive eating discs, and unable to boot the OS, I'm really at a loss of what to do.
I disabled my microphone. Now I can't start the wizard to re-enable it.It fails to start stating no device found. How do I get it back?

Using Windows98 when surfing, one did not have to save every picture (a sometimes laborious process), as they could be easily recovered from the Temporary Internet Files folder. One just searched the T'I'F' Folder for jpg's of a certain approximate size and date/time (and name), and then copy/pasted them into wherever. Also, saving individual pictures whan surfing was easier as a "save" icon appeared at the top left corner of the picture when the mouse pointer passed over it. How do I use these facilities in Vista?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWill some kind person advise on how to remove fonts from the file in Vista Home? I am running Office 2003 on my laptop, and the Fonts file has MANY fonts installed, the vast number of which I do not want. Simple things in life are generally best. In XP I could simply click on any font, check to see if it was required, then delete, keeping the numbers down to a select few. Now in Vista, I am informed that it is not allowed to remove most of the fonts in the file for some unknown.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was taking a nap and when I woke up the power supply was dead. I replaced the power supply and have it all hooked up, but I now can't get my computer to boot up. The light on the MOBO is on, and everything seems to be good. One thing I noticed is the CPU fan no longer goes on where it had been previously plugged in. However, if I plug it in elsewhere, the fan works. So, now the question seems to be, is the CPU bad or is something wrong with the MOBO? Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can test either or any other thoughts on troubleshooting?
View 4 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I upgraded my system to aforementioned specs. I needed to copy data from old Seagate 80 GB IDE drive to my new 160 GB SATA drive. What was really annoying that when I tried to copy a file from IDE drive to SATA drive for example a file of 650 MB started with great copy speed but gradually slowed to a crawl and it took a long time for me to transfer data.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have fixed a few problems with my computers based on the information here. This is my first post. Last night, while playing Sims 2: Apartment Life, my moniter flickered a black screen twice and then froze. Almost immediately after I got a blue screen of death, however the computer shut off faster than I could read. So, this morning I turn on my computer and nothing. I got the white text and the nice big 'e' for emachines with the Boot and Bios keys listed. Then the monitor went to standby. I turned it off and then back on and tried to get boot settings so I could start up in easy mode - thinking something happened to my drivers, but same thing happened, monitor went on standby.
So, I turned the computer off, opened it up and took a look inside. A little dusty, but everything was plugged in right and I made sure the video card was secure. I took the plug out of the video card and put it in the default on board thingy. Started it up, same thing. So, now I'm thinking, '****, my card died'. 'Cept when I turn the machine on the fan starts up. So, I'm confused. I take the card out and start up the computer and BAM, it works. So, I'm still thinking its a dead card. Well, I try a few things, like uninstalling the old video card drivers, restarting and plugging the card in during restart. WIth the moniter still plugged into default and working correctly, I check Device Manager and what do you know?! It lists my card and starts trying to install the drivers. So I go ahead and reinstall the drivers. Says I need to restart, so I do. Sure enough, the monitor just goes to standby like before. Doesn't matter what I plug it into. So I take out the card, plug it into default, and go into my BIOS. I make sure it's reading my video card from the PCI-e slot and such, which it says it is. So, now I'm just confused......
