Turned On Computer Password Locked
Apr 24, 2009My 4 year old son turned on the computer when no one was looking and typed in various random entries into the password box and now we’re locked out! How can I reset this?

Oct 3, 2009Vista. When pc sleeps, password is locked. I've tried to change in power options and reboot and works for a few times, then reverts back to password locked.

Dec 11, 2009I have a problem: I have a Windows 7 computer that is part of a Domain. By using System Restore, Windows has managed to ruin the trust relationship with the domain. I use a domain logon and am the only administrator on the machine (the Local Administrator is disabled). I cannot log in normally, due to the trust relationship issue. If I disconnect the network cable while logging in, I can (cached credentials), however I cannot change any UAC-protected settings because if I enter my credentials into it, connected to the network or not, UAC will simply show an error "This operation requires elevation". Nothing I try will work.
I cannot disjoin the domain, because those controls are protected by UAC. Logging in from a remote machine using my credentials will give me "Access is denied". Resetting the computer account in AD has no effect. I cannot format and reinstall because this laptop does not boot from CD by default and requires me to install a program to change BIOS settings (don't ask, it's a Toshiba, the usual way is broken). I cannot install this program because I am faced with yet another UAC prompt. I cannot remove the harddrive because of the laptop's design. how to salvage this computer?
Password Protected Sharing Is Clearly Turned OFF
Apr 3, 2008I am unable to access Vista from an XP computer because apparently Vista is demanding a user name and password to share files. Password protected sharing is clearly turned OFF in the frigging network and sharing box. The computers are in the same workgroup, all sharing permissions have been turned on. SP1 had done nothing to rectify the disaster that is Vista, particularly networking with XP computers, which far outnumber Vista boxes because XP works and Vista doesn't.When you do something as simple as changing the name of the workgroup you have to reboot the computer. How is this any better than Windows 3.x?

then a few seconds latere the monitor turns off and the power button starts to flash, when i push the power button it brings me to a welcome screen and the user icon says locked, when i click that it brings me to the desktop again and then everything is fine....what can i do to stop this as it does this to me everytime i turn off then turn it on the next day......
Frozen, LOCKED UP Randomly The Computer
Sep 3, 2008I recently built a computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit. I absolutley love it and have only had two problems. LOCKED UP Randomly the computer will just lock up. No graphical glitching, no errors, no nothing. In fact if you just came in the room and looked at the screen everything would appear normal. This happens when doing any manner of things. It has happened when playing games, surfing the net, working on a document or even when the computer is left on overnight.
Its very sporatic too. I have gone a whole week without it happening with turning the computer on and off. I have also had it happen a few times within a few hours. Sometimes I can leave the computer on for a few days and it wont happen, sometimes it will happen right after I have signed in..............
DEP Can Be Changed Turned Off Computer
Jun 11, 2008Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? .

Started Computer Can Not Display Working Turned Off
Apr 24, 2008It started two days ago. When I woke up my computer was on but there was no display. I rebooted the machine and it it came up fine but seemed to shut abnormaly. Later that day when I tried to remote control into my machine I was able to get a black screen (so the connection was established but know video.) When I got home it was the same thing: the computer was on but no video and keyboard and mouse did not work. It seemed though, after looking at the logs, that the computer was functioning because there were logs created during the time it was "off." Looking through the logs I could see nothing abrnormal. Truly I don't know what I was looking for? Anyway, in power options I turned off the feature to shut down monitor after certain time. Turned off screen saver.
The sleep mode was already off. I was connected to PC via remote control from work and machine rebooted itself. All it said in log was: The previous system shutdown at 7:30:29 PM on 4/24/2008 was unexpected. Not sure if the reboot and the aforementioned issue is related. Anyway, I am not sure why this started happening. I did install a game call Rome Univerisalus or some such name. I uninstalled the game when I started having problems. It didn't work anyway. I am using Vista 64. I just recently built the computer. Didn't experience any problems until recently. Does anyone know how I can figure out what is going on? And even better, how to fix. I am thinking of using the restore point of before I installed the game.
Wireless Connection Drops When The Computer With The Router Is Turned On?
Oct 26, 2008My friends computer uses a Netgear router and his computer runs on XP to which I try to connect for internet access. When his computer is turned OFF, I can access the internet no problem. However, when his computer is ON, I can not connect!!
-Vista 64 bit, service pack 1 and is completely up-to-date
-All hardware drivers are up todate with no hardware problems
-DLink has good reception with 1.20 driver (D-Link WMA 510)
-Router computer is XP, up-to-date drivers. Computer uses Netgear router

Apr 12, 2009I have a "Lenovo SL500" thinkpad laptop, Running Vista Business 32bit. And a costum built Desktop PC running Vista Ultimate. Both password protected, but with the same password. I would like to transfer files vire the network. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the Reciving computer was not password protected. All I would do is open "Network" located in the start menu and then do the folowing "Network\". To find computers name: open start menu, right click on "computer" and press "properties" But because the reciving computer is password protected I can only see "Printers" I need security so I cannot remove passwords OR open my computer up for file sharing!
The only other options I have got are: Bluetooth: This Ok but is slow and you are needed on both computers for accepting, entering passes etc. (I would preferrer not to!) Server: We have a Server but this means uploading to the server(could take ages), Then Downloading the server(thats double the time). (Again I would preferrer not to!) Memory sticks: Basically a simaller problem to the server! (Once again I would preferrer not to!) So basically what I am asking is: Does anyone know an application/progam that deals with network file sharing (That will do what I am asking for) Or a hidden option in vista to allow this Or something?

I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.

Sep 4, 2009My gram asked me to fix her computer.... She let me little cousin try and fix it and he reset the password for whatever god forsaken reason. Now she is locked out.... I could install a second version of an os on her computer but she has almost no space left....
I have tried everything to get some sort of hint. The only thing left that i can do is reinstall everything and she said that is not an option because she has a ton of personal info on there.

The only password that is set up is mine for the user account but I can't even access it.I tried to enter my password but the system did not recognize it. I switched off and booted again to no avail untill it says seventh attempt.

Aug 8, 2008A client of mine has a Hewlett-Packard laptop with Vista Home Premium. A few days ago her husband used the computer for some web checking and did something to the computer. Neither one of them can figure out what he did, but now all her files seem to be locked or read-only. She can open a file or e-mail, but cannot edit. She was able to forward an e-mail to another computer and from that computer she could use the file. It would seem that something got pressed wrong on the keyboard and that has rendered the files uneditable. I'm new to Vista since I'm much more used to Windows XP, so I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas as to what we can try in order to restore full use of her files.

Jan 16, 2009My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, SP1. I purchased my desktop pproximately a year and a half a go and the default Defragmenter was set to once a week for both C: and D: and I have left it that way ever since.
However (and I am not too computer savvy, unfortunately), I have read that since D: in my Vista OS is merely a locked Recovery, it should never be defragged. Is this true, and for all the time I have been defragging it weekly, could this have hurt System recovery should I ever need to use it?

Toshiba Laptop Comes Out Of Sleep - Locked
Nov 29, 2008When my laptop is awakened out of sleep, it should enter right into Windows, but instead comes up to a screen that gives my name and underneath my name it says *locked* --- I click on my name and then Windows opens up.

Mar 23, 2008We have a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain, ISA server with VPN, and one Windows Vista client. The Vista owner calls me every time he wants to connect with VPN, and tells me that he cannot. Looking in Active Directory shows me, that his domain user account is locked out. When I unlock the account he is able to login. It seems that something (a service? office 2007?) does try to authenticate with wrong credentials, and locks his account every time it can.
I have the default settings for the account lockout policy, threshold of 3, and 0 for lockout duration. This problem is really annoying so much, that I think about to tell him to uninstall Vista and install XP again. The XP users don't have this problem at all. I've looked around in the web and found some other users that have the same problem. But I found no solution for it.
