Defragging D, Locked Recovery?
Jan 16, 2009
My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, SP1. I purchased my desktop pproximately a year and a half a go and the default Defragmenter was set to once a week for both C: and D: and I have left it that way ever since.
However (and I am not too computer savvy, unfortunately), I have read that since D: in my Vista OS is merely a locked Recovery, it should never be defragged. Is this true, and for all the time I have been defragging it weekly, could this have hurt System recovery should I ever need to use it?

I keep trying to defrag my laptop but files are still on there fragmented. On my C drive the system volume is loaded with fragmented files. I shut down restore 2-3 times rebooted and checked again and it still comes up with fragmented files. On my D drive the folder MFT won't defrag either. I did the same thing with restore on that drive too. How do I get these darn files to defrag?

I may be flamed "for not using the search" on this one, but I did. I didn't scour, as I'm about to go to sleep, but I did notice the mention of Auslogics quite a few times. That's my current defragger, as the default defragger in Vista, I'd say, is pathetic. My question, though, is: Is there anything else? What is the best way to defragment Vista? I don't know if it's a juvenile idea, but in XP, I was always comfortable using the defragmenting tool the OS came with because.. it was for XP, and it worked. You saw the progress. As for Vista's, it shows nothing, there's no visual progress, and every time I use it, it stays on for days on end if I do not end it myself. Auslogics seems to work alright, I see the progress, but I can't verify it's potency and power myself. Plus, I didn't pay. Seems to good to be true. Can someone point me in the right direction, or correct me if need be?

I'm sure this subject is beat to death, but I've been searching and cant find a thing, is registry defragging the same as registry cleaning, as far as effects of course. I know they perform different things but are they both harmful to the system?

My gram asked me to fix her computer.... She let me little cousin try and fix it and he reset the password for whatever god forsaken reason. Now she is locked out.... I could install a second version of an os on her computer but she has almost no space left....
I have tried everything to get some sort of hint. The only thing left that i can do is reinstall everything and she said that is not an option because she has a ton of personal info on there.

A client of mine has a Hewlett-Packard laptop with Vista Home Premium. A few days ago her husband used the computer for some web checking and did something to the computer. Neither one of them can figure out what he did, but now all her files seem to be locked or read-only. She can open a file or e-mail, but cannot edit. She was able to forward an e-mail to another computer and from that computer she could use the file. It would seem that something got pressed wrong on the keyboard and that has rendered the files uneditable. I'm new to Vista since I'm much more used to Windows XP, so I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas as to what we can try in order to restore full use of her files.

I have Vista Home edition, in the past with XP, I was able to "hide" the Administrator account, so it would not be seen at login. I tried this with Vista and I have locked myself out. Is there anyway I can get back in and change the registry back to it's original configuration? These are the instructions I used to "hide" the Admin account. The administrator on this particular machine is named "Owner". Can I enable the built in "Administrator" account?

I'm xxp9 at hotmail dot com. I found that one can easily break into a locked Windows XP when a screen saver based on Adobe Flash Player is on. Click your right mouse button you'll get the context menu of the flash player. Then click "about Adobe Flash Player..." from the menu you'll get an IE! Then you can follow the famous "IME security hole". Run "c:windowssystem32cmd.exe" from IE(open another IE window from "File"->"new window" if you failed to run cmd.exe from the first one), input
net user xxp/add*net localgroup administrators xxp /add to get the administrator's permission. I also post in my blog, though, in Chinese, at xxp9 dot spaces dot live dot com This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. When my laptop is awakened out of sleep, it should enter right into Windows, but instead comes up to a screen that gives my name and underneath my name it says *locked* --- I click on my name and then Windows opens up.
Instead, I would like to see the machine come out of sleep mode and go instantaneously into Windows.

We have a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain, ISA server with VPN, and one Windows Vista client. The Vista owner calls me every time he wants to connect with VPN, and tells me that he cannot. Looking in Active Directory shows me, that his domain user account is locked out. When I unlock the account he is able to login. It seems that something (a service? office 2007?) does try to authenticate with wrong credentials, and locks his account every time it can.
I have the default settings for the account lockout policy, threshold of 3, and 0 for lockout duration. This problem is really annoying so much, that I think about to tell him to uninstall Vista and install XP again. The XP users don't have this problem at all. I've looked around in the web and found some other users that have the same problem. But I found no solution for it.

I recently built a computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit. I absolutley love it and have only had two problems. LOCKED UP Randomly the computer will just lock up. No graphical glitching, no errors, no nothing. In fact if you just came in the room and looked at the screen everything would appear normal. This happens when doing any manner of things. It has happened when playing games, surfing the net, working on a document or even when the computer is left on overnight.
Its very sporatic too. I have gone a whole week without it happening with turning the computer on and off. I have also had it happen a few times within a few hours. Sometimes I can leave the computer on for a few days and it wont happen, sometimes it will happen right after I have signed in..............

I have on my PC Vista Ultimate 32. Last night i saw a movie near my PC and left it open (most of the time i locked it when not in use), when suddenly right in front of my eyes - the PC locked him self! It was like i locked it myself - but alone! So, i run AVG scan, W Defender scan and another anti-spy program scan - nothing.
My UAC is on all the time. My Fire Wall is on all the time. I am the only user on this PC, and no one know my password. I check in the Event Viewer and there was no unusual activity. the locked activity was mentioned but in the normal way, as if I was the one that did it. Is it Vista failure? Or maybe someone broke into my PC?

The problem is there is a password on the bios (where this came out of i don't know) and I need to boot from CD but I cannot get in to change the order, also this means I cannot use bios clearing password tools as they are off a cd. I think the laptop holds the bios password in the eeprom and not the bios battery.I have striped down the laptop a far bit but could not find the bios battery. The problem is I am on holiday at the moment and I don't really want to strip it totally as I am in a hotel, but I really need to get this going.asap
I have tryed some default password for the bios manufacturer, but nothing. I wiped my laptop before and put on vista 64, but when I redownloaded the acer empowering support wiget(that would let me change the order their) that does not work and I cannot find anything on google about the issue. Is there any programs that can do this from windows?
