View 9 RepliesI have on my PC Vista Ultimate 32. Last night i saw a movie near my PC and left it open (most of the time i locked it when not in use), when suddenly right in front of my eyes - the PC locked him self! It was like i locked it myself - but alone! So, i run AVG scan, W Defender scan and another anti-spy program scan - nothing.
My UAC is on all the time. My Fire Wall is on all the time. I am the only user on this PC, and no one know my password. I check in the Event Viewer and there was no unusual activity. the locked activity was mentioned but in the normal way, as if I was the one that did it. Is it Vista failure? Or maybe someone broke into my PC?
I run a small business and recently had to lay off an employee. The Vista based PC that she was assigned to is screen locked and she had set the password to a value only she knows. Is there a way to bypass this? Ps. We don't know the Admin password.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with 64-bit Home Premium. I'm using IE 8. I have some questions regarding "locking down" Vista with the tools supplied by Vista.
I'm using IE 8. I've read that it uses protected mode & that the IE code is isolated from the OS code. Does that mean that it is impossible for my laptop to be infected by viruses, spyware, etc. ?
The following is from the boook, "Windows Vista Unleashed".
"Administrators group-Members of this group run as standard users, but are able to elevate their privileges when required just by clicking a button in a dialog box.
(That must be why I need to click the button on the dialog box.)
Standard users group-These are the least-privileged users, although they, too, can elevate their privileges when needed. However, they require access to an administrator password to do so."
Well, that's confusing! Administrator runs as standard user. Then why setup a standard account when the administrator runs as a standard user?
What other settings in IE 8 can I set or change to make IE 8 more secure?
My gram asked me to fix her computer.... She let me little cousin try and fix it and he reset the password for whatever god forsaken reason. Now she is locked out.... I could install a second version of an os on her computer but she has almost no space left....
I have tried everything to get some sort of hint. The only thing left that i can do is reinstall everything and she said that is not an option because she has a ton of personal info on there.
I had the surprise this morning of not being able to access my PC;When I booted it, before Windows starting I got the request to enter "system password", I had never came across before. The only password that is set up is mine for the user account but I can't even access it.I tried to enter my password but the system did not recognize it. I switched off and booted again to no avail untill it says seventh attempt.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA client of mine has a Hewlett-Packard laptop with Vista Home Premium. A few days ago her husband used the computer for some web checking and did something to the computer. Neither one of them can figure out what he did, but now all her files seem to be locked or read-only. She can open a file or e-mail, but cannot edit. She was able to forward an e-mail to another computer and from that computer she could use the file. It would seem that something got pressed wrong on the keyboard and that has rendered the files uneditable. I'm new to Vista since I'm much more used to Windows XP, so I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas as to what we can try in order to restore full use of her files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home edition, in the past with XP, I was able to "hide" the Administrator account, so it would not be seen at login. I tried this with Vista and I have locked myself out. Is there anyway I can get back in and change the registry back to it's original configuration? These are the instructions I used to "hide" the Admin account. The administrator on this particular machine is named "Owner". Can I enable the built in "Administrator" account?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, SP1. I purchased my desktop pproximately a year and a half a go and the default Defragmenter was set to once a week for both C: and D: and I have left it that way ever since.
However (and I am not too computer savvy, unfortunately), I have read that since D: in my Vista OS is merely a locked Recovery, it should never be defragged. Is this true, and for all the time I have been defragging it weekly, could this have hurt System recovery should I ever need to use it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm xxp9 at hotmail dot com. I found that one can easily break into a locked Windows XP when a screen saver based on Adobe Flash Player is on. Click your right mouse button you'll get the context menu of the flash player. Then click "about Adobe Flash Player..." from the menu you'll get an IE! Then you can follow the famous "IME security hole". Run "c:windowssystem32cmd.exe" from IE(open another IE window from "File"->"new window" if you failed to run cmd.exe from the first one), input

When my laptop is awakened out of sleep, it should enter right into Windows, but instead comes up to a screen that gives my name and underneath my name it says *locked* --- I click on my name and then Windows opens up.
Instead, I would like to see the machine come out of sleep mode and go instantaneously into Windows.
I joined a vista laptop to a SBS 2008 domain & after logging on, I just get the spinning wheel next to the cursor & everything is pretty much locked up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWe have a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain, ISA server with VPN, and one Windows Vista client. The Vista owner calls me every time he wants to connect with VPN, and tells me that he cannot. Looking in Active Directory shows me, that his domain user account is locked out. When I unlock the account he is able to login. It seems that something (a service? office 2007?) does try to authenticate with wrong credentials, and locks his account every time it can.
I have the default settings for the account lockout policy, threshold of 3, and 0 for lockout duration. This problem is really annoying so much, that I think about to tell him to uninstall Vista and install XP again. The XP users don't have this problem at all. I've looked around in the web and found some other users that have the same problem. But I found no solution for it.
I recently built a computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit. I absolutley love it and have only had two problems. LOCKED UP Randomly the computer will just lock up. No graphical glitching, no errors, no nothing. In fact if you just came in the room and looked at the screen everything would appear normal. This happens when doing any manner of things. It has happened when playing games, surfing the net, working on a document or even when the computer is left on overnight.
Its very sporatic too. I have gone a whole week without it happening with turning the computer on and off. I have also had it happen a few times within a few hours. Sometimes I can leave the computer on for a few days and it wont happen, sometimes it will happen right after I have signed in..............

The problem is I am on holiday at the moment and I don't really want to strip it totally as I am in a hotel, but I really need to get this going.asap
I have tryed some default password for the bios manufacturer, but nothing. I wiped my laptop before and put on vista 64, but when I redownloaded the acer empowering support wiget(that would let me change the order their) that does not work and I cannot find anything on google about the issue. Is there any programs that can do this from windows?
Customer locked out of her Acer Aspire 3680.
I hope no one minds me posting this question here but I am at a loss to solve this issue and hope someone here can help. My customer is locked out of her Acer Aspire 3680. She hasn`t used it for a few months and has forgotten the password. I have searched the net for possible solutions and tried everything I came across that appeared to make sense but other than sending the laptop to Acer for them to unlock it at approx ??100 plus postage and VAT
I have no idea.
I have tried and had no luck with the following:
?I have opened up the back to try and find the CMOS battery
?I have disconnected 4 connectors that look like they could lead to a CMOS battery for more than 30mins?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit with Service Pack 1 and all other updates (as far as I can tell). that is, my Avast! Anti-Virus has classified my kernel32.dll and wsock32.dll files as trojans and locked them in the vault. I approved the transfer a long time ago and only recently realized my mistake. When I attempted to restore the files, however, Avast! says that it was able to complete the action "with errors" (the error being that it couldn't move the files).
However, in addition, I think I am missing other .DLL files, such as the Wireless Extensibility Module. I've already tried re-installing the WLAN driver, updating the driver, using alternate Wireless management software, and doing a system restore. Yet the problem persists. I've even tried doing a complete system restore from boot-up, but it says that none exist.
Another problem is that various other .exe files in the /System32 folder won't execute (I am assuming this is because they are missing associated .DLLs). I have all important documents backed up, so it wouldn't be a problem to a total system restore, but, like I said, I can't.
Today my screen saver locked up and I had to shut down via the on/off button. On reboot the screen was covered in rows of " l "s and then a blue screen that was only on for a moment but said something about "graphics driver and timeout". I can get into Safe Mode. The drivers are up to date. Now I don't know what to do next.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI run some CPU intensive processes (video encoding using X264) in a command shell. Since I don't want it to affect my normal foreground applications, I set it to IDLE/BELOW_NORMAL priority using Process Explorer. However, when I lock my screen (manually or automatically after some idle time), the encoding virtually stops. When I unlock my screen, I can see from recent history that CPU was idle instead of being utilized to run the encoding process. What can I do to ensure that my background encoding process continues to run even when I am away from the computer (the screen is locked), but at the same time not affect any foreground applications if I happen to be using the computer?
