So far I tried 5 different delete utilities and nothing worked without a reboot! This Vista64 is a PITA when it comes to locked files. Anyone having any luck with an Unlocker clone that works in 64 bit?
View 7 RepliesIm using a HP Pavilion dv9700 notebook with vista 32bit OS installed. Note that when i did the following i was not connected to the internet: The problem only recently occured after i attempted ot remove Norton security centre from my computer. That uninstalled fine. I also installed tunup utilities 2009 and did a reboot. On reboot the Windows loading bar froze. This kept happening every time a did a restart. So i decided to do a system restore to resolve that problem. That resolved the freezing issue and i figured that i would have to remove internet security again and so tried to unistall it again only for it to say "The system cannot find the path specified." So Norton is now corrupt and i cant run it or uninstall it. But i decided to run registry scans and cleaned up the computer with Tuneup.
After i took the laptop back to where i can use the internet. I plugged in the Lan cable and tried to run firefox but it didnt connect. The only connection i can get is local only access. I live in University halls and i should be on the internet when i plug in the LAN cable. I have since tried a system restore to restore back to a couple of days ago but its no use. I still have the same problem. No internet and no chance of uninstalling Internet security for good. As my LAN network driver is Nvidia netwroking controller I can only assume that its the nvidia controller that is the problem. Even though windows claims there is nothing wrong with it. I have tried uninstalling the driver, but when i confirm it just closes the dialoge box and doesnt uninstall it at all. I cant rollback the driver as its not an option and although i downloaded an older version of the driver and installed it (it said that it installed?), it has no overrun the more up to date driver. I have been trying to fix this for around 6 hours now & its vital that i get back online with the computer as i have assignments due in for tuesday. (im using some one elses computer at the moment)
A client of mine has a Hewlett-Packard laptop with Vista Home Premium. A few days ago her husband used the computer for some web checking and did something to the computer. Neither one of them can figure out what he did, but now all her files seem to be locked or read-only. She can open a file or e-mail, but cannot edit. She was able to forward an e-mail to another computer and from that computer she could use the file. It would seem that something got pressed wrong on the keyboard and that has rendered the files uneditable. I'm new to Vista since I'm much more used to Windows XP, so I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas as to what we can try in order to restore full use of her files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit with Service Pack 1 and all other updates (as far as I can tell). that is, my Avast! Anti-Virus has classified my kernel32.dll and wsock32.dll files as trojans and locked them in the vault. I approved the transfer a long time ago and only recently realized my mistake. When I attempted to restore the files, however, Avast! says that it was able to complete the action "with errors" (the error being that it couldn't move the files).
However, in addition, I think I am missing other .DLL files, such as the Wireless Extensibility Module. I've already tried re-installing the WLAN driver, updating the driver, using alternate Wireless management software, and doing a system restore. Yet the problem persists. I've even tried doing a complete system restore from boot-up, but it says that none exist.
Another problem is that various other .exe files in the /System32 folder won't execute (I am assuming this is because they are missing associated .DLLs). I have all important documents backed up, so it wouldn't be a problem to a total system restore, but, like I said, I can't.
recently any files i either a) delete/move in bulk while holding the CTRL button or b) entire folders i delete, have been reappearing when my computer restarts after shutdown. the deletion shows up in my recycle bin or the destination i moved it to, but it's like another copy appears in its place. these have so far been .mp3 or .jpg files (i haven't tried it on any other kind). i've emptied the recycle bin and they still appear. what could be causing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to reboot my Vista Ultimate (I know how to do this, I'll use the Recovery CD that came with my laptop), but I don't want to lose the files on my hard drive. I also have no way to access my hard drive at the moment (I tried restarting and pressing F8 and all I got was the message I initially got, below).
I got impatient at my ASUS M51 T9500 laptop freezing, so I pressed the "On/Off" button for a long time, got the computer to turn off and then pressed "On" again. The computer started, but Vista wouldn't come up. I got this error message, which I keep getting when I do "Ctrl Alt Delete" (I don't know why I tried that, I just hoped it would help) and when I restarted and pressed F8: Windows Boot Manager. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert the Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

I try to delete them, but I get a message saying Calculating time remaining and it just keeps showing that and never gives me a time or deletes the items. It says the speed is 0 bytes / sec. View 9 Replies View RelatedCertain files (like exe files) and folders (if they contain exe files) just can't be deleted. I get "You need permisson to do this". I'm the Administrator and only user of the machine. I tried activating and logging in a the "hidden" Administrator, but that didn't help at all.
I 've tried with UAC on and off. With it on I get the joy of clicking about 6 times before I end up with the "you need permission" (shouldn't that be checked first??) No wonder people turn that "feature" off.
I can rename the exe files and usually delete them after a reboot, isn't that very strange?
- Media Player was broken, but seems to work now, it actaully stops playing when you close it.
- I've been getting a "Parts of Logos has stopped working" or something like that error message at every startup for the last weeks.
- Sleep mode worked the first week only. Now it never wakes up.
- IE7 crashes at least once a day.
I've used XP for years and it was never this broken.
I have files on desktop but I cannot delete it. Can anyone tell me how I can delete these from my desktop?

1: copy is under: Desktop - Hal, and
2: is under Desktop - Computer - Compaq (C - Users - Hal.
Should I delete one? If so, which one? It appears that they are exactly the same, but I haven't checked every file, and when I add or update/change a file it goes to both places. (I am the only one on the computer) They both have: AppData, and the Green color files, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, etc.
When I use "Search", it appears that the returned files properties are under 1 (Desktop - Hal) and when I use "Save As" for a file, it also goes to 1. Therefore, I think I should delete 2, but would I delete "Users" or just "Hal"? Am I getting into dangerous waters in doing this or should I just leave it alone?
I've noticed this and have seen a couple of posts but it seems most people don't "interpret" the post as intended. I have Vista 32bit. I am an administrator. If a file has the "read-only" attribute checked, I can NOT delete the file. Vista complains that I need "privileges in order to delete the file" and asks me to "try again". I have full permissions on the file, and I am the owner of the file. The issue stems from the fact that it's marked "read only". If I remove the read-only attribute, I can delete it fine!
What gives here? In XP, if you attempted to delete a read only file, it would prompt you telling you the file was read-only and asked if you were sure you wanted to delete it. Vista flat out implies I have no permissions to the file, which is untrue. I sometimes have network directories that contain thousands, maybe millions of files in them. Changing attributes on that many files, prior to deleting them poses significant problems.
I was trying to remove a program file AT&T security Installation Wizard. The folder was corrupted. I was able to delete a few of the files. but two of them kept saying need permission. Now I am the Admin and I do have UAC unchecked. In God's name whose permission do I need to get rid of these 2 remaining files.

I just received an error message telling me that my E: is full, so the most recent backup was unable to be completed. How do I delete old backup files - is it as simple as deleting the particular backup folder and subfolders? Also, can you recommend any strategy on which backups to delete and which ones to keep? I had an incident where I tried to create a desktop shortcut forWindows Explorer. I don't know why but the shortcut had ".exe" at theend. When I tried to rename it, it warned me about something, as if Iwas renaming the actual program and not just a shortcut.
I usually make a shortcut for a program by dragging the name from the Start menu to the desktop. Then it will have the name of the program with no .exe.
