Does Take So Long To Delete Files?

Feb 8, 2009

When I'm deleting a large number of files, it takes forever. Why is this? This a new laptop which is supposed to be faster. It has 4 gig memory & a large hard drive. It is also very slow when emptying the recycle bin. In fact, everything in Vista seems to be slower than in XP, even though the older computer was 4 years old. What's the big deal with Vista supposed to be better? IMO it's not at all

How Long Do Files Stay In Recycle Bin

Feb 25, 2009

I'm using Vista Home Premium, 64bit, with SP1 update. Problem: I have "recycled" several files thinking that they would stay in the recycle bin until I emptied it.... like in XP. However, the Vista Recycle Bin seems to empty itself. When I go back a few days later, the bin is empty, though I did not empty it. Hence my question: How long do files stay in Vista Recycle Bin? Is there a setting to keep it from auto-clearing the Recycle Bin?

Folder Takes A Long Time To Show Files

Mar 20, 2010

I have a folder with about 142 gigs of files in it and when I open it up, it takes sometimes 15 sec. before anything shows in the folder, while the little strip across the top of the folder does its "Progress" thing. Yes, I have Indexing on for that partition (this is a partition of my main hard drive; it is a 566g partition used only for archiving and it has 126gigs left).

What strikes me as particularly stupid about this is that it does the "progress" thing EVERY time, even if I close it and open it again 10 seconds later, it does not "remember" the indexing or whatever it just did! Is there any way to fix this? Seems absolutely ridiculous to have a super fast computer that can't find files in a folder without waiting 15 seconds!

More Memory: Does Seem To Take A Long Time To Start Up And To Load / Run Large Files?

Feb 3, 2010

I have a Toshiba laptop with 2Gb Ram, running Vista. I have no major problems, but my pc does seem to take a long time to start up and to load / run large files, and sometimes seems to go into a coma. I use CCleaner and Defraggler, and I uninstall/delete anything that I dont need. But my pc does seem to be struggling sometimes. I could add another 2Gb Ram, or I could upgrade to Windows 7 (which I read has much lower overheads??). Or perhaps I should buy a new PC? My question is, how do I decide what the best route is??

Explorer Files Dont Work And Can't Delete Files

Jul 14, 2009

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.

I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

Undeletable Files :: Unable To Delete 0 Kb Files

Aug 27, 2008

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!

I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

So I figured that I'd delete the whole folder........or not:

Won't Let Me Delete Files And Folders.

Mar 23, 2008

Certain files (like exe files) and folders (if they contain exe files) just can't be deleted. I get "You need permisson to do this". I'm the Administrator and only user of the machine. I tried activating and logging in a the "hidden" Administrator, but that didn't help at all.

I 've tried with UAC on and off. With it on I get the joy of clicking about 6 times before I end up with the "you need permission" (shouldn't that be checked first??) No wonder people turn that "feature" off.

I can rename the exe files and usually delete them after a reboot, isn't that very strange?

- Media Player was broken, but seems to work now, it actaully stops playing when you close it.

- I've been getting a "Parts of Logos has stopped working" or something like that error message at every startup for the last weeks.

- Sleep mode worked the first week only. Now it never wakes up.

- IE7 crashes at least once a day.

I've used XP for years and it was never this broken.

Copies Of Files; Delete One?

Jun 23, 2008

Somehow, I have created two copies of all my files. (I have Vista Home Basic) I have no idea how I did this or when, or if this is what Vista does.

1: copy is under: Desktop - Hal, and
2: is under Desktop - Computer - Compaq (C - Users - Hal.

Should I delete one? If so, which one? It appears that they are exactly the same, but I haven't checked every file, and when I add or update/change a file it goes to both places. (I am the only one on the computer) They both have: AppData, and the Green color files, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, etc.

When I use "Search", it appears that the returned files properties are under 1 (Desktop - Hal) and when I use "Save As" for a file, it also goes to 1. Therefore, I think I should delete 2, but would I delete "Users" or just "Hal"? Am I getting into dangerous waters in doing this or should I just leave it alone?

Cannot Delete Read-only Files

May 5, 2008

I've noticed this and have seen a couple of posts but it seems most people don't "interpret" the post as intended. I have Vista 32bit. I am an administrator. If a file has the "read-only" attribute checked, I can NOT delete the file. Vista complains that I need "privileges in order to delete the file" and asks me to "try again". I have full permissions on the file, and I am the owner of the file. The issue stems from the fact that it's marked "read only". If I remove the read-only attribute, I can delete it fine!

What gives here? In XP, if you attempted to delete a read only file, it would prompt you telling you the file was read-only and asked if you were sure you wanted to delete it. Vista flat out implies I have no permissions to the file, which is untrue. I sometimes have network directories that contain thousands, maybe millions of files in them. Changing attributes on that many files, prior to deleting them poses significant problems.

Not Allowing You To Delete/rename Certain Files

Jul 29, 2009

Are there certain files crucial to Vista, that you are not allowed to delete/move/rename?

If so, would explorer.exe be one of them?

I had an incident where I tried to create a desktop shortcut forWindows Explorer. I don't know why but the shortcut had ".exe" at theend. When I tried to rename it, it warned me about something, as if Iwas renaming the actual program and not just a shortcut.

I usually make a shortcut for a program by dragging the name from the Start menu to the desktop. Then it will have the name of the program with no .exe.

Where Files Go When Delete Them Over A (wireless) Network?

May 27, 2009

On the desktop side: WinXP Home, all updates etc in place On the laptop side: WinVista Home Premium, all updates etc in place. I have a wireless ADSL router connected by cable to the desktop machine. The laptop connects to the router via a wireless connection. The laptop has full access to everything on the desktop machine. The desktop machine has limited access only to certain folders on the laptop because that's the way Vista is. I have things set up so that from the laptop (Vista) machine I can open, run, copy, move, and delete files on the desktop (XP) machine.

The recycle bins on both machines work properly. If I delete files on the XP side they go to the XP recycle bin and if I delete files on the Vista side they go to the Vista recycle bin. I noticed yesterday however that when I delete XP-side files from the Vista side, they aren't sent to the recycle bins on either machine. This seems very strange. Is it by design? Is there a setting I need to set to have such files sent to a recycle bin? Where do files go when you delete them over a (wireless) network?

Not Authorized To Delete Or Rename Own Files

We're new at working under Vista Home Premium SP1. My daughter was working as a standard user and found that she was not authorized to delete or rename her own files. She had to log off, then switch to an dministrator in order to do this. (Administrator couldn't do anything either until standard user logged off.). It makes sense that a standard user should not be able to manipulate files of another user, but you'd think that she should be authorized to deal with her own files. Is there a parameter to allow this?

Delete Files Recycle Forever

Mar 28, 2008

so when I delete something it goes to the recycle bin. When I delete something from the recycle bin it is gone forever. -THINK AGAIN- I deleted somthing from the recycle bin and got it back a few days later...I also found a ton so stuff I was told was "deleted" forever by Windows. I brought it back (using some uber-simple free program) just to see it it was really there (not just a file name) I was able to open it and read it as well as continue to edit it... This is PROBLEMATIC; some of these files contain sensitive data such as SSNs', medical info, and other stuff that I had believed to be "deleted" and wasn't. Why is it still on there and how do I delete it FOREVER? (Without drilling holes in my HD) >>I'm packing a Dell XPS 1530 running a home edition of Microsoft Vista
