Reboot Vista Ultimate Without Losing The Files On My Hard Drive

Jan 9, 2009

I need to reboot my Vista Ultimate (I know how to do this, I'll use the Recovery CD that came with my laptop), but I don't want to lose the files on my hard drive. I also have no way to access my hard drive at the moment (I tried restarting and pressing F8 and all I got was the message I initially got, below).

I got impatient at my ASUS M51 T9500 laptop freezing, so I pressed the "On/Off" button for a long time, got the computer to turn off and then pressed "On" again. The computer started, but Vista wouldn't come up. I got this error message, which I keep getting when I do "Ctrl Alt Delete" (I don't know why I tried that, I just hoped it would help) and when I restarted and pressed F8: Windows Boot Manager. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert the Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

Losing Hard Drive Size

Jun 8, 2008

I noticed something is going wrong with my hard drive. Yesterday I checked my hard drive and it has 577gb free space. Now today I checked and it has only 572gb free space. It seem like every day, it loses 1gb. I haven't install any software when it was losing hard drive. It's like I'm virtually losing hard drive for nothing. Btw, my computer said it came with 750gb hard drive but it only said I have 572gb free of 688 gb hard drive. I think 10gb of them are used for recovery.

Hard Drive Migration Without Losing Data

Mar 27, 2008

I have windows vista ultimate 64.... its on my Ide Maxtor 200GB... which is very noisy and seems to lock up.... So I went and got a Sata Seagate (my prefered brand)... and downloaded the Disk Wizard software from Seagate to migrate drives.... rather than having to lose all my data and operating system etc. In and Ide to Ide situation, this works fine... you simply swap drives over once Disk wizard finishes....

But, when it finished and advised me to swap drives over... disconnecting IDE drive meant when I powered up PC, it would not boot, and gave me error message... NO IDE HDD Found!!! Obviously the boot manager is still looking for IDE drive.... So I then proceeded to use Vista Boot Pro... but this doesnt seem to want to run on my machine?... it shows in Task Manager, but nothing on screen... Not one to give up, I thought I would simply use the Vista Disc to boot to Repair mode....

I diconnected Ide drive... left Sata connected... powered up, disc started, got to Repair window... and it showed a window for drives which was empty... but had two tabs... install drivers and cancel... I chose to install drivers... from my motherboard disc as this contains the Raid drivers.. I assume thats what I need to install.... Anyways... was a waste of time, error message stating they failed... Chose the right ones...Via x64 etc...

I'm Losing Around 5-10gb Of Hard Drive Space Every 2 Days

Mar 13, 2009

I just installed Vista x64 for the first time (first time I use a 64bit Windows OS, I have used Ultimate 32bit before back in 2007) and realized updates are being installed almost EVERY day, the disc I have is already updated with Service Pack 1 so I don't understand why there are so many updates being installed all the time.

That's not the issue, the issue seems to be I'm losing around 5-10gb of hard drive space every 2 days or so, seems vista updates are HUGE, when I installed the first time (I have a 500gb drive, in reality it's 465gb) I had 451gb free fair enough, then after some updates the next day I had 440gb! where did the 11gb go? I mean 11gb in updates? Then a day later I had around 425gb! without me putting all my music, games, pictures etc etc!!, after I installed 2 games I had around 409gb which is fair considering they are big games, then I put my pictures in which is not that much, around 1gb And now, a day later without having any extra files myself I already have 398gb free!!, does Vista install something all the time that takes that much space? I know the OS after updates and such it's supposed to take approximately 15gb or so I should have (providing I had not installed my things yet) around 450gb or so.

External Hard Drive For Ultimate X64

I would like some advice on which external hard drive to buy for Vista Ultimate x64. I am not a techy and have read some posts which have left me more than a bit confused! The external hard drive needs to be easy to set up and use. I just want to be able to (very) easily back up my files on a daily basis and save photos, spreadsheets to the external hard drive.

Missing Hard Drive With Windows Ultimate

Mar 23, 2008

I'm running a desktop system with Windows Vista Ultimate. I have encountered
a problem that I know is being experienced by other Vista users; I'm hoping
there is a workaround. I have an internal 1 TB Hitachi hard drive (not the C drive). This desktop system is only about six months old, and ever since I first acquired it I found that this internal hard drive would go missing after putting Vista into Sleep or Hibernation mode. Restarting the system would always enable Vista to recognize the internal 1 TB hard drive again.

However, about two weeks ago this temporary fix wasn't working anymore -- restarting Vista didn't enable the 1 TB internal drive to be recognized. It's been missing ever since. And yet this drive is working properly according to Device Manager (Including having the latest driver). Doing a Google search has produced a few other threads on the web where Vista users are also experiencing missing hard drives. Supposedly this situation is to be directly addressed by Microsoft with the release of Service Pack 1. Unfortunately, I need access to my internal hard drive now, not weeks from now when Service Pack 1 is finally released.

Ultimate Installation Crashing Hard Drive

Aug 17, 2009

My husband and I just bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965. It comes installed with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit (SP1). We tried installing an upgrade of Windows Ultimate using the 64-bit disc. It crashed our hard drive. We took it back to Best Buy and they told us that the computer just had a bad hard drive. They gave us a new computer (exact same model). We went home, tried installing, same thing happened. Called Toshiba. They don't know why it would be doing that. Called Microsoft. They don't know why it would be doing that either.

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

Can't See .swf Files Saved To Hard Drive

Jun 17, 2008

I have a program which enables me to save embedded flash files to my hard drive. I just got a lap top, with Vista installed, and for some reason I am unable to see swf files that I save. They *are* there, because if I try to re-save the same file to the same folder, I get the file already exists message.

I never had this problem with XP, so I'm thinking it's something about Vista settings. I've already tried enabling show invisible files and checking "read only" in folder options.

Files To Encode And Hard Drive Is Noisy

I have some files to encode and when I do that, it just sounds like it's full speed ahead. Maybe its nothing but it scares me a little. Is this normal? And im assuming it's the hard drive, I guess im not really sure. Like a car revving up it's engine is the best way I can describe it.

Can Save Registry And Files For Restore To Another Hard Drive

Aug 6, 2009

I backup up data to a remote Western Digital drive using the Vista Backup verything seems fine. I selected to backup all files on the "Back Up Files" menu except TV Shows, Compressed Files and Additional Files. My question is, If this hard drive dies and no longer lets me access it (which is what happened to my last XP computer) can I save registry and all other files that will let me restore to another hard drive with the least amount of hassle? Also is there anyway I can save profiles and passwords and the like. Ideally, I'd like to backup my entire hard drive and be able reinstall it to a new hard drive if this one dies. When my XP hard drive died I had my documents saved but had a real problem with this other information.

Unable To Find Files On Removed Hard Drive

Nov 22, 2009

My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).

The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.

Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.

Hard Drive Trashing: Hard Drive LED Light On My Sony Vaio Keeps Blinking EVERY SECOND

Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.

The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.

Should I Partition? (new To Vista With New 750 Gig Hard Drive)

Mar 21, 2009

I am getting a new HP today with a 750gig hard drive. Vista Home Premium. 64 bit SP1. I've never used Vista. I seem to recall hearing in the past that partitioning a drive so large is better than having it be just one 750 gig unit. If so, I want to partition it optimally from the outset. So:

1) SHOULD I partition my 750 gig C drive?
2) If so, how is it done? Do I go to Computer > Manage > Disk Management like in XP? (I've never used Vista.)

If I should do it, will I need to reformat to NTFS or will it already be NTFS? And should I use the "Quick format" option or the slow version? (Never did know the difference when I reformatted external drives, but I used the fast version.)

On my external drives I erased everything and then reformatted. Obviously I won't want to do that here, as it comes loaded with the operating system and MS Works, etc. So how do I partition without erasing files?

Run Vista Backup, Can't See Hard Drive

Apr 7, 2008

I installed Vista Ultimate about a year ago, and a few months later also installed Suse 10.2 and I know dual boot, GRUB handling the boot. I have no problems whatsoever running either OS, and they are both installed on the same physical disk, just different partitions. Now, here's the strange thing: If I open disk management, the C-drive is visible and listed as healthy. If I run the Vista backup app, it can't even see the hard drive it itself is Installed on! A while back I had problems installing a patch, and through Googling it started having suspicions that the patch problem could have to do with my dual boot setup (the patch had to do with the disc encryption thing), so I thought I'd restore Vista's boot record and delete the Suse partitions, but when I start from the DVD and select repair, it can't see the OS.

Vista Hard Drive Unusual Problem

Jan 26, 2010

I haven't been able to figure out something with the Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system.

My other non-booting hard disk (IDE) of 300 gb recently died, so I got a SATA Segate Barracuda 1.5TB disk. It is working fine. I formatted it without problems. Under the properties box it shows Capacity: 1.36TB, and the drive is indexed for faster searching. As far as I know too, there is nothing set up on it for System Restore.

However, I am now running into a very strange problem copying files to this disk. Even with 1.36TB on it, I can only copy up to 131 gb of data to it. After that Vista refuses to copy anything. I am very suspicious about the 131 gb limit that I am finding, that must be significant. I have also tried to search in the BIOS choices, but couldn't find anything there. It is an ASUS M4A79 Deluxe motherboard, with 5 SATA ports, which I am using #1, #2, #3, and #5, if that matters. I thought about switching the SATA cable for the Seagate drive from #5 to #4, but since Vista sees it as 1.36TB it seems that there wouldn't be any difference.
