I have windows vista ultimate 64.... its on my Ide Maxtor 200GB... which is very noisy and seems to lock up.... So I went and got a Sata Seagate (my prefered brand)... and downloaded the Disk Wizard software from Seagate to migrate drives.... rather than having to lose all my data and operating system etc. In and Ide to Ide situation, this works fine... you simply swap drives over once Disk wizard finishes....
But, when it finished and advised me to swap drives over... disconnecting IDE drive meant when I powered up PC, it would not boot, and gave me error message... NO IDE HDD Found!!! Obviously the boot manager is still looking for IDE drive.... So I then proceeded to use Vista Boot Pro... but this doesnt seem to want to run on my machine?... it shows in Task Manager, but nothing on screen... Not one to give up, I thought I would simply use the Vista Disc to boot to Repair mode....
I diconnected Ide drive... left Sata connected... powered up, disc started, got to Repair window... and it showed a window for drives which was empty... but had two tabs... install drivers and cancel... I chose to install drivers... from my motherboard disc as this contains the Raid drivers.. I assume thats what I need to install.... Anyways... was a waste of time, error message stating they failed... Chose the right ones...Via x64 etc...
I would like to copy all the contents from my boot drive to a new hard drive recognized by the BIOS. Easy Transfer Wizard works between two systems not a single system... I want to copy all my data including the hidden and system files to the new drive and then reconfigure the boot sequence to boot from the new drive... Western Digital has a utility that works with XP but not with Vista... what is the best way to move this data... will drag and drop move everything?
I noticed something is going wrong with my hard drive. Yesterday I checked my hard drive and it has 577gb free space. Now today I checked and it has only 572gb free space. It seem like every day, it loses 1gb. I haven't install any software when it was losing hard drive. It's like I'm virtually losing hard drive for nothing. Btw, my computer said it came with 750gb hard drive but it only said I have 572gb free of 688 gb hard drive. I think 10gb of them are used for recovery.
I just installed Vista x64 for the first time (first time I use a 64bit Windows OS, I have used Ultimate 32bit before back in 2007) and realized updates are being installed almost EVERY day, the disc I have is already updated with Service Pack 1 so I don't understand why there are so many updates being installed all the time.
That's not the issue, the issue seems to be I'm losing around 5-10gb of hard drive space every 2 days or so, seems vista updates are HUGE, when I installed the first time (I have a 500gb drive, in reality it's 465gb) I had 451gb free fair enough, then after some updates the next day I had 440gb! where did the 11gb go? I mean 11gb in updates?Then a day later I had around 425gb! without me putting all my music, games, pictures etc etc!!, after I installed 2 games I had around 409gb which is fair considering they are big games, then I put my pictures in which is not that much, around 1gb And now, a day later without having any extra files myself I already have 398gb free!!, does Vista install something all the time that takes that much space? I know the OS after updates and such it's supposed to take approximately 15gb or so I should have (providing I had not installed my things yet) around 450gb or so.
I need to reboot my Vista Ultimate (I know how to do this, I'll use the Recovery CD that came with my laptop), but I don't want to lose the files on my hard drive. I also have no way to access my hard drive at the moment (I tried restarting and pressing F8 and all I got was the message I initially got, below).
I got impatient at my ASUS M51 T9500 laptop freezing, so I pressed the "On/Off" button for a long time, got the computer to turn off and then pressed "On" again. I recently got windows 7 and installed it onto an empty hard drive in my pc. I now have my old hard drive with vista on and my new hard drive with windows 7 on. The only problem is i have hundreds of programs and updates etc on my old hard drive that i really want to use with windows 7 on my new hard drive. Does anyone know how i can transfer over all the programs and data from my old hard drive to my new hard drive? I tryed just copying the files over but i dont have the registry settings on my new hard drive with windows 7, so none of the programs work

I wanted to buy an external hard drive to transfer my family pics and vids from my XP box to my Vista box. Been reading about some external hard drives not working with Vista x64. I've also read that I might ned to re-install Vista with the external hard drive connected. Can anyone recommend an external hard drive that will work with Vista x64? I have a hard drive which i took out of an old computer and which has lots of data on it, i bought an external hard drive case and when i connect it to my computers, i have two one vista and one xp it tells me in computer management that it is unallocated, does this mean that i have lost all my data on the hard drive, also it shows up in device manager but not on my computer on the vista computer , and its the same on the xp computer, the blue led light on the external hard drive case stays blue for about 10 seconds then goes off, the hard drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 ,160 Gbytes, and the case is from ads technologies usbx-834.
I went to Fry's to have my computer (HP Windows XP) looked at because it wouldn't turn on. I was told that my mother board was fried. So, I bought a new computer (HP pavillion with vista) and a hard drive enclosure and the guys at Fry's put my hard drive in it and told me that I would just need to hook it up, turn it on and drag and drop my files. I've tried that but it's not working.
Ive been using my 500gb hitachi hard drive for along time now and its just about full, i have a new 1TB hard drive which is also more powerful.M Does anyone know how i can transfer all the contents from my old 500gb hard drive onto this new 1TB hard drive, as its running slow with only half a gb free space on it. I have hard drives from both Win 98 SE and XP machines. I currently use a system with Vista 32. Is it possible to hook up these drives to my Vista machine and transfer the data to the Vista drive?
I had my hard drive from my laptop die a few days ago. I was able to recover almost all of the files except for a few Windows file to an external hard drive enclosure. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.
I can't gain permission to access a hard drive that has back data on it. Tried to upgrade BIOS success! Killed my OS? Reinstalled my OS success! Now I can't access my 2nd HDD? I am willing to format and start with a clean HDD but I need to get some files off of it first. I have tried several things but none see to work.
i would like to switch from 32 bit vista ultimate to 64 bit because i want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and be able to use all of it to it's fullest. Right now i have 2 paritions on my single HDD. 1 is my back-up windows xp partition, it is also the larger of the 2 so i put most of my data and programs on there. My second partition is my Vista Ultimate 32 bit version on which i use some programs from my windows xp partition that i wouldnt like to lose. Is there any way i can change from my 32 bit version of windows vista to a 64 bit version without losing all of my data... including the data on my windows xp partition if possible.
After posting my original thread and noting probs with start up repair, my local computer man has said he has had a few people with problems with their computers and that he can fix if if i bring it in - this will not involve losing all my data either. So as I know how good he is i will be taking it in for repair. Check out your local repair centres for help. He also advised me never to accept any updates from vista!! How come Microsoft have not even acknowledged there is a problem with these updates yet? Where is their moral responsibility?

Following an unfixable error with the Vista Backup & Recovery program I've decided that my first Vista installation has reached the end of its natural life.It was an upgrade from XP Home Edition (which came with the PC) to Vista Home Premium on the original C partition. Not ideal, but now I would like to start afresh with a clean install.I have purchased a second faster SATA2 drive, which I have partitioned in two: G drive with 58.5GB (intended for the new Vista installation), and Z drive with 238GB to which I will copy all my data before the reinstall. The drive is formatted as a basic disk and both partitions are NTFS primary partitions (I found previously that Vista install doesn't accept dynamic disks for the OS partition).As my copy of Vista is an upgrade, the reinstall has to be initiated from within the existing Vista installation for the key to work.
My question - will Vista reinstall cleanly onto the G drive without problems? I have found that the install commences properly (I quickly stopped it from proceeding as it was only a test). My concern is that the migration could fail half way through if the machine reboots and doesn't know which disk/installation to boot to!Anybody with experience of this scenario? Also, if it does install correctly onto the G drive, am I right to assume that the original C drive partition on the old drive then becomes inaccessible? (Hence the need to copy files across before the install attempt).
It all started with failed updates. Then I discovered that I couldn't run the check disk utility. A friend finally gave me a solution sfc /scannow in DOS which told me I had some corrupted files that windows couldn't fix. It told me to check out the log - but I couldn't find it. Now I discover (Having read a thread in VistaForums about the update error code 80070652) that I no longer have tabs in my Task Manager. aaaoorrrgh! I going nuts. how to restore these functions without losing all my data and updated drivers etc. (I'm not a beginner but I'm a sort of low level intermediate)
The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:

The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
I have a ASUS laptop running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I have several programs that I use but no loner have the insall disks for. Should I have to reformat in the future I would hate to lose them. Here's what I'm thinking: Buy a extrenal hard drive. Seagate, 1Tbit, usb, cost $90.00. Copy my hard drive to it. If I need to reformat. Reinstall Vista from my recover disk that came with the computer. Then copy files from external drive. Bingo. All my old programs would be there and working. Question is: Can this be done? What file/folders do I need to copy to the external drive?
My understanding is that a ready boost drive is a usb drive that vista uses to dump data to, rather than a hard disk as the readyboost drive is considered to be faster than the hard disk. So if my comment above is true, and I can now buy a 32gb readyboost drive for $70, is it a good idea to install games such as FsX onto a readyboost drive, and get better performance than using a HDD...

I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup.Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. I have a Vista Ultimate operating system. I have two partitions: C and D. In C I have my windows and in D i had my documents. Last times the computer booted from the hard disk I had to repair my Vista to let me enter in the windows. Because of that I formatted my C partition, by deleting it and creating it again. And when I logged in my fresh Windows surprize. All the info in the old C partition was now in my D, and the old D is missing. Those were my documents! Is it possible for me to recover the data in the old D drive? I really need those. Can you recommend me a software program that can recover that data? I don't mind the price of the licence, as far as it works with great results.
Medion Windows home vista; saved photos/files to D drive (recovery) by accident. Medion support said too complicated to do over phone, ask someone who knows about comps. I need to retrieve only my saved files, and not interfere with recovery files on D drive. I cannot clean up or retrieve data on D drive.
And I'm ready to make Vista my only OS. Is there a way to migrate, r copy, Vista 64 from my D artition to my C partition without re-installing? I have Norton Ghost 14. Which doesn't run in Vista 64, but it does run in DOS. And I suppose I can use the disk clone feature?
