Change 32 Bit To 64 Bit Without Losing Data?
Aug 4, 2008i would like to switch from 32 bit vista ultimate to 64 bit because i want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and be able to use all of it to it's fullest. Right now i have 2 paritions on my single HDD. 1 is my back-up windows xp partition, it is also the larger of the 2 so i put most of my data and programs on there. My second partition is my Vista Ultimate 32 bit version on which i use some programs from my windows xp partition that i wouldnt like to lose. Is there any way i can change from my 32 bit version of windows vista to a 64 bit version without losing all of my data... including the data on my windows xp partition if possible.

Jun 2, 2008After posting my original thread and noting probs with start up repair, my local computer man has said he has had a few people with problems with their computers and that he can fix if if i bring it in - this will not involve losing all my data either. So as I know how good he is i will be taking it in for repair. Check out your local repair centres for help. He also advised me never to accept any updates from vista!! How come Microsoft have not even acknowledged there is a problem with these updates yet? Where is their moral responsibility?

Mar 27, 2008I have windows vista ultimate 64.... its on my Ide Maxtor 200GB... which is very noisy and seems to lock up.... So I went and got a Sata Seagate (my prefered brand)... and downloaded the Disk Wizard software from Seagate to migrate drives.... rather than having to lose all my data and operating system etc. In and Ide to Ide situation, this works fine... you simply swap drives over once Disk wizard finishes....
But, when it finished and advised me to swap drives over... disconnecting IDE drive meant when I powered up PC, it would not boot, and gave me error message... NO IDE HDD Found!!! Obviously the boot manager is still looking for IDE drive.... So I then proceeded to use Vista Boot Pro... but this doesnt seem to want to run on my machine?... it shows in Task Manager, but nothing on screen... Not one to give up, I thought I would simply use the Vista Disc to boot to Repair mode....
I diconnected Ide drive... left Sata connected... powered up, disc started, got to Repair window... and it showed a window for drives which was empty... but had two tabs... install drivers and cancel... I chose to install drivers... from my motherboard disc as this contains the Raid drivers.. I assume thats what I need to install.... Anyways... was a waste of time, error message stating they failed... Chose the right ones...Via x64 etc...
Windows Updates: Restore Functions Without Losing Data & Updated Drivers?
Jun 15, 2009It all started with failed updates. Then I discovered that I couldn't run the check disk utility. A friend finally gave me a solution sfc /scannow in DOS which told me I had some corrupted files that windows couldn't fix. It told me to check out the log - but I couldn't find it. Now I discover (Having read a thread in VistaForums about the update error code 80070652) that I no longer have tabs in my Task Manager. aaaoorrrgh! I going nuts. how to restore these functions without losing all my data and updated drivers etc. (I'm not a beginner but I'm a sort of low level intermediate)

Jun 19, 2008I have Vista Ultimate and a new USRobotics PCI FaxModem. WFS faxing works fine if I compose the content of the fax in the WFS New Fax editor window and then click send. But if I try to insert an attachment - a PDF or TIFF document created with my Microtek scanner - the fax fails with an "Invalid Data" error message. Is my scanner creating a file that WFS cannot render? Or is there some other known issue with faxing scanned documents?If WFS is choking on my scanner's output, how do I know which file formats/types WFS can render and which scanners output acceptable formats?

Aug 24, 2009Recently I started getting a black screeen with "Invalid system disk...Replace the disk, and then press any key" error at startup.
What could that mean? And when I just press a key, it starts up normally. Everytime my laptop boots, that error comes up, and I press a random key, and everything runs normally again.?
Dynamic Disk Status Invalid.
Jun 22, 2008Before installing Vista, I tought of making a backup on a second internal hard disk which a bought and installed on the original XP professional machine, I found myself to be very smart doing this. Unfortunatly now that Vista is installed on this machine the disk is not accessible. disk manager says "dynamic disk status invalid"? What can/should I do to gain control over this disk again? I can convert it to a standard disk (only option available in disk manager) beause then I will loos the information it contains.

Dec 18, 2009I used to have 3 USB disks (dynamic GPT) running fine under Vista Ultimate. Then I made a fresh Windows 7 Home Premium install. Noticing that it didn't recognise my disks (and other problems as well), I decided to go back to Vista Ultimate (using Windows.old).
But now the original Vista Ultimate installation didn't recognise them either! They have status Invalid in Disk Management Console. DISKPART sees the disks, and also the partitions, but it doesn't appear to find any volumes. Any command I try to do returns the error message that it is not allowed on invalid disk packs.

Jul 24, 2009I'm currently running Vista Home Premium x64 with SP1 and I am trying to install SP2 but I get this error: "the application binding data format is invalid"
I have uninstalled "Windows Live OneCare" and switched off the firewall and this has had no affect. I have also ran the "System Update Readiness Tool" and this has done nothing to help the situation either. Also tried the "The System File Checker tool". It got to 19% and then said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Also when I try to install IE 8, I get this error code "800736b2". I had to do a system restore earlier today as something was causing Vista to lock up and I could only turn the PC off by holding the power button. This has resolved the issue of the lock ups. Don't know if this could have anything to do with it?
Invalid System Disk Error And Network Drives Is Off
Mar 23, 2008We have the Microsoft corporate program where you get the products to use through the enterprise. I have been trying to setup a test machine with the 64 bit version of Vista so burned the ISO we created for safge keeping off of one of our network drives. Disc seemingly gets created without issue however when I place it in the DVD drive and choose boot from CD/DVD I get the invalid system disk error just after it says this.

Apr 2, 2009I recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium (I like it) but I can not for the life of me figure out how to reactivate my IIS server. I installed IIS 7 and have opened port 80 and done all of the port forwarding and pass through on my Linksys that is necessary (this worked very well under XP and IIS 5.5 with the same Linksys settings on the same physical machine). The second issue may be related. I can not get to any external web sites via IE 7 when I am connected via Cisco VPN to any of my clients' sites. This was never an issue under IE 7 and XP and I can not seem to figure out what setting to change.

Working in a window, pause for a few seconds and the title bar dims and and the window becomes inactive and another open window title bar or a desktop icon will become highlighted ("active"). I have to mouse click in the window I was working in to reactivate it. This will keep repeating until I reboot. Any ideas on why this is occurring and how to keep it from happening in the future?

Vista Keeps Losing Network
Mar 23, 2008Vista Ultimate notebook. XP Pro desktop. Both in same workgroup and
network. Both have Netbios over TCP enabled. Vista has Network discovery
ON, private network. XP has LLTD installed, both have it enabled. Vista can
ping XP's IP or "desktop". Cannot ping \desktop.
Works for a few weeks then suddenly Vista can't see Desktop in network map, or network.
How to fix?

Losing Restore Points!
Feb 6, 2009For about a month now,I have been losing restore points every 2-3 days. I am set up for automatic Windows Updates and any restore points that appear over a 2-3 day period completely disappear after that period-(I can only hold restore points for 2-3 days in other words). I do have plenty of storage left on my hard drive-243 GB free,so I have plenty of room on my hard drive. I use to retain at least a whole month's worth of dozens of restore points,but now I can only retain 2-3 days worth. I wonder if it could have something to do with Norton Internet Security-I activated the 60 day trial about a month ago on my laptop computer and it seems like my system restore points have only been disappearing since I activated the trial. But,the same thing happened with my Windows Update History about 2 months ago-I had completely lost my update history,but that was before Norton Internet Security.
When I go to System Restore after the 2-3 day period,the system restore window says that no system restore points have been created on your disc-something to that effect. I do receive Windows Updates almost on a daily basis,so I know that I receive restore points almost everyday. I check system restore everyday and there is always restore points,but any restore points that I receive disappear usually after 2 days. Also, that box that you check to see system restore points older than 5 days is no longer on the system restore window. I'm open to any suggestions. Don't be afraid to get too technical with me.
Losing Internet Connection
May 15, 2010This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now. Namely the dropping of the internet. I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX". At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet". Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period. To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC. I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

It seem like every day, it loses 1gb. I haven't install any software when it was losing hard drive. It's like I'm virtually losing hard drive for nothing. Btw, my computer said it came with 750gb hard drive but it only said I have 572gb free of 688 gb hard drive. I think 10gb of them are used for recovery.

I recently got a new computer with Vista and every time I try to import my photos I get many warnings that some of the photos can't be imported due to errors. In the dialog box that lets you watch the progress of your photos being imported the photos that are OK have little thumbnails and the photos that have errors appear as tropical landscape animations or something.
I'm losing so many photos? At first I thought it was the card - I formatted it and tried again to no avail. I switched cards and the same thing happened.
Keeps Losing Dual Monitor Settings
Jun 10, 2009Maybe there's a fix this somewhere deep in the forums - I just can't find it. And I've read in other forums the same problem but no one seems to have the fix. Just got a new computer - HP with Vista Home Premium 64bit. Video card is ATI Radeon HD4850 with two DVI outputs. I have twin Acer V223W monitors connected with DVI cables.
I can figure out how to set them up in Vista, and also in ATI Catalyst, setting the default and extending the desktop and all that. I had been running dual monitors like this for years on my former XP machine. My problem is, each time Vista goes to sleep, or hibernates, and even on some restarts it reverts back to clone mode. HUGE pain in the butt.
Losing Internet Connection - Repeatable
Jul 6, 2008Starting my machine yields complete internet access. When I put it in a low-power state (Start | icon left of lock) and then revive with mouse movement, I have lost internet access (double monitor icon in system tray reports "Access: local only". No internet dependent program (email, browser, etc) functions.
I then have to go to Network Sharing Center | Diagnose and Repair to find that the Network Adapter is "Local Area connected" and must be reset. That resetting does restore internet access as demonstrated by full function of the programs and icon in system tray now reporting "Access: Local and Internet". How do I fix this? I much prefer putting the machine in low-power state during brief departures from the computer. Turning off and rebooting is a time consuming process. Vista is Home Premium. Box is Gateway GM5478
