DATA PROTECTION Fraud Antivirus: Data Protection Is A Counterfeit Application Which Pretends To Be A Legitimate Security Tool

May 15, 2010

Data Protection is a counterfeit application which pretends to be a legitimate security tool. It is also from the same rogue family as Digital Protection, Your Protection, User Protection, Dr. Guard and Paladin Antivirus. The trojan based software starts its activities as soon as it installs onto your computer. Malware has no ability to detect and terminate the parasite. It only gains that user lose their vigilance and would buy a registered version of Data Protection application.

This is a fraud and dangerous for your computer. Behind an offer stands bad people who will use your money for malicious intentions. This application is not worth spending your money. As any malware this one will scan your computer automatically and will show fake results. You should ignore it. Do not fall for this blatant scam. Data Protection can also redirect your web browser to deceptive web pages that advertises “full” version of the security tool. Do not buy it, but choose decent anti-spyware application and terminate Data Protection upon detection. - the conclusion is that Malware bytes does remove it,, you need to download the lastest malware byte or update the one you got. Data Execution Prevention Or No-Execute Memory Protection?

May 17, 2009

I had DEP enabled in my Bios setup, but have just had my OS reinstalled (Vista Home Premium 32 bit) and now cannot find DEP mentioned by that name in the Bios settings. There is reference to "No-Execute Memory Protection"-is that DEP by another name, and if so do you agree it is a good idea to enable it?

I had something come up on my screen warning me about 2 trojans and I need to install XP antivirus protection..is this part of windows? It is trojan MYtob.mailer and Zlob.z. Is this for real? It has the microsoft logo, and looks official, but I'm always a bit skeptical of these things..I was afraid to click on install, not knowing what it was. I thought it would have already been installed. I have Vista.

I have Kaspersky and it seems to be ok. But it is very weird and pretty hard to use. Im not sure if i want it anymore but i need to be 100% sure of another program before i uninstall the other one. I also wanted to know if it is possible to have 2 security protection on your computer at once. I would only want this because i would never want to have my computer being used without virus protection.

Ownership Of Application Data Folder, Cannot Rename

May 24, 2009

I am trying to help with a Vista Laptop where we are trying to rename a folder located in the users APP DATA folder. I've used the utility by Doug Knox (?) to take ownership and it shows full rights under the "Security" tab. Cannot rename a folder in the "Roaming" section and I need to do that to test a backup file restore. We keep getting "You need permission to do this..."

Copy To Application Data Folders Fails

Mar 23, 2008

I have a user whose PC crashed. The hard drive was corrupted but I was able to salvage most of the data including the Windows XP Profile. On Vista, when I try to copy default.nk2 to the MicrosoftOutlook folder in Application Data, I'm denied access even though I have an administrator account. This makes it kind'a tough to support my users who've moved to Vista for various and sundry reasons. I can import the .PST files but I can't restore the .NK2 files. This doesn't make a heckuva lotta sense to me.

Vista Application Data Folder Repeats Itself

May 15, 2010

I have Windows Vista Home Basic Edition installed. If you should suddenly find that C:Program DataApplication DataApplication DataApplication Data... is repeating itself ad nausium, try deleting either the first or the last of the repetitions. (I deleted the last one and they all disappeared.) Then, go to your Recycle Bin and you will find it there with a folder size of zero, which will seem odd, since when it was deleted mine was nearly one gig and I have heard the size of the repetitions sometimes grow as large as 40 gigs. In any case, restore it. You should find that the repetitions no longer exist and the the folder is back to the size it was originally. The files will show the current date under Date modified and Date created (with several Date modified exceptions). I hope this works for you. I also hope my Application Data folder stays like it is from now on.

Backup And Restore: Hidden Application Data Folders

Jan 27, 2010

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.

I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.

I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

Free Security Suite: Antivirus Application Can Do Wonders In Removing Viruses And Protecting Your Computer

Jun 26, 2009

1. Avira AntiVir Personal - This antivirus application can do wonders in removing viruses and protecting your computer. It has heuristic detection which stands out amongst free antivirus packages and from my personal experience it works well with Windows Vista. Oh and did I mention it doesn't eat up much resources? (Scan once a day)

2. Malware Bytes AntiMalware - This baby is free, reliable and updated every 10 minutes, well maybe not 10 minutes but it is updated at least more than twice a day from my experience. This supplements Avira by removing items that are not detected by Avira. Now, no trojan, virus worm or whatever malicious software will ever cause great damage to your system (Scan once every three days)

3. Last but not least, Windows' default firewall will do the trick. Let's face it, we don't want anything complicated controlling our internet traffic. I mean most of us these days are behind a router which has a built in firewall already. I honestly even didn't run my firewall with xp and was fine with it

"the Application Binding Data Format Is Invalid" While Attempting To Install SP2

Jul 24, 2009

I'm currently running Vista Home Premium x64 with SP1 and I am trying to install SP2 but I get this error: "the application binding data format is invalid"

I have uninstalled "Windows Live OneCare" and switched off the firewall and this has had no affect. I have also ran the "System Update Readiness Tool" and this has done nothing to help the situation either. Also tried the "The System File Checker tool". It got to 19% and then said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Also when I try to install IE 8, I get this error code "800736b2". I had to do a system restore earlier today as something was causing Vista to lock up and I could only turn the PC off by holding the power button. This has resolved the issue of the lock ups. Don't know if this could have anything to do with it?

Access Protection Won't Start Up

Apr 4, 2008

I turned my computer off the night before but then when i turned it on the next morning my Avast On Access Protection won't start up.. and also my wireless network connection won't connect. only a few programs start up. now i figured a way to fix this but not permanently.

i would have to log into another Administrator account then do a system restore on with that account because on the regular Administrator account it wouldn't open and everything seems to work fine, Shuts down then restores and files and settings then restarts and from there i am able to log into the first Administrator account and everything starts up fine but then when i shut the computer down and start it back up the problem just happens again.

What i also noticed is that when i click shut down from the start menu that is when everything seems to load up like normal but the system is already about to shut down so it just closes again. now this only happens in XP and my vista partition is perfectly fine but i figured i'd post this problem in here

I'm not offered Vista SP1 from Windows Update. I have Windows Vista Premium installed and use Symantec Endpoint Protection. I know the wgx.sys is stopping delivery of SP1 for older version. I have about two weeks ago upgrade Symantec to the new version compatbile with SP1.I have also downloaded the MS readiness tool. There is no hardware driver shown in Windows Update for my computer, which could cause stopping SP1. Is there a way to find out, why I don't get SP1 via Windows Update delivered? All updates are coming through. The last ones was on Tuesday.

Starforce Protection Not Work

May 8, 2009

I bought Dreamfall The Longest Journey yesterday and although its installed fine, a copy protection program it forces you to install adds a driver to the windows directory. A driver that someone decided would be better if it weren’t digitally signed... Anyway my computer is now spitting it's dummy out on boot unless I tape it in with the advanced boot menu. Is there anything I can do about this? or do I just have to put up with pressing F8 every time my pc starts until I get bored and uninstall the game. The driver is called sfsync04.sys. I heard there is a way to make Vista always forego driver checking on boot but I'd rather not do that as I don’t see the point of compromising my pc's security for the sake of one game.

Media Center DVR TV Copy Protection Unnecessary

Jun 20, 2008

Media Center recognizes copy protection on recorded TV. You can record and play a TV movie in Media center, but you cannot burn a DVD copy. You also cannot open, edit and save Media Center recorded movies in Movie Maker. Movie Maker only imports the commercials before the movie starts then stops. Shows like local news programs are fine, but who wants to save those? Media Center's DVR-MS files of movies are too large to copy to a data DVD to save and remove. (I haven’t looked at lowering the recording quality yet.). I’d like to trim the ends off of DVR movie recordings and edit out commercials. I don’t intend to distribute these to anybody, but I would like to make a DVD that I could watch on any player in my house, not just the Media Center computer where the movie was recorded. In the days of VHS taping we could do this. There must be a way to do it now. It is probably even legal under fair use or if not, it should be. I hope Microsoft reconsiders their copy protection scheme.

Password Protection Turn Off Both Vista Machines

Mar 23, 2008

Why is Vista asking for a username and password everytime I try to access shares with password protection turned off on both Vista machines? Damn if I know. I can use the XP Pro machine to access the shared files on either Vista machine and don't get asked for a username/password. Vista's networking is flaky to say the least. The whole idea of small office networking is to be simple, Vista has tried to complicate this with password protection. Why should I have to have all users on every machine? That's just more network maintenance I don't want in a small home office. Besides some users may not want other people's accounts on their machines but they'd still like to share files and Vista has made this a nightmare.

Checklist:
File sharing : On (check)
Printer sharing: On (check)
Public sharing: On (check)
Password protection: Off (check)
Workgroup name the same (check)
Private network (check)

Logon to the router and I can see the Vista machines and the XP machine and the network printer. On XP machine access the shared printer on Vista 1, works like a charm. On XP machine open a shared folder on Vista 2, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on XP machine, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on Vista 2, sorry....do not pass go do not collect $200 until you enter a username and password. EXCUSE ME! Oh well, so much for progress. Not a firewall problem, get the same result whether or not a firewall is enabled or not. Haven't tried a crossover cable between the 2 Vista machines to see if it's the router but I have my doubts because XP works fine. Solution: Move all shared printers and files to XP and forget Vista sharing.
