Vista Application Data Folder Repeats Itself
May 15, 2010
I have Windows Vista Home Basic Edition installed. If you should suddenly find that C:Program DataApplication DataApplication DataApplication Data... is repeating itself ad nausium, try deleting either the first or the last of the repetitions. (I deleted the last one and they all disappeared.) Then, go to your Recycle Bin and you will find it there with a folder size of zero, which will seem odd, since when it was deleted mine was nearly one gig and I have heard the size of the repetitions sometimes grow as large as 40 gigs. In any case, restore it. You should find that the repetitions no longer exist and the the folder is back to the size it was originally. The files will show the current date under Date modified and Date created (with several Date modified exceptions). I hope this works for you. I also hope my Application Data folder stays like it is from now on.

I am trying to help with a Vista Laptop where we are trying to rename a folder located in the users APP DATA folder. I've used the utility by Doug Knox (?) to take ownership and it shows full rights under the "Security" tab. Cannot rename a folder in the "Roaming" section and I need to do that to test a backup file restore. We keep getting "You need permission to do this..."

Data Protection is a counterfeit application which pretends to be a legitimate security tool. It is also from the same rogue family as Digital Protection, Your Protection, User Protection, Dr. Guard and Paladin Antivirus. The trojan based software starts its activities as soon as it installs onto your computer. Malware has no ability to detect and terminate the parasite. It only gains that user lose their vigilance and would buy a registered version of Data Protection application.
This is a fraud and dangerous for your computer. Behind an offer stands bad people who will use your money for malicious intentions. This application is not worth spending your money. As any malware this one will scan your computer automatically and will show fake results. You should ignore it. Do not fall for this blatant scam. Data Protection can also redirect your web browser to deceptive web pages that advertises “full” version of the security tool. Do not buy it, but choose decent anti-spyware application and terminate Data Protection upon detection. - the conclusion is that Malware bytes does remove it,, you need to download the lastest malware byte or update the one you got. I have a user whose PC crashed. The hard drive was corrupted but I was able to salvage most of the data including the Windows XP Profile. On Vista, when I try to copy default.nk2 to the MicrosoftOutlook folder in Application Data, I'm denied access even though I have an administrator account. This makes it kind'a tough to support my users who've moved to Vista for various and sundry reasons. I can import the .PST files but I can't restore the .NK2 files. This doesn't make a heckuva lotta sense to me.

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.
I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.
I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

I'm currently running Vista Home Premium x64 with SP1 and I am trying to install SP2 but I get this error: "the application binding data format is invalid"
I have uninstalled "Windows Live OneCare" and switched off the firewall and this has had no affect. I have also ran the "System Update Readiness Tool" and this has done nothing to help the situation either. Also tried the "The System File Checker tool". It got to 19% and then said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" Also when I try to install IE 8, I get this error code "800736b2". I had to do a system restore earlier today as something was causing Vista to lock up and I could only turn the PC off by holding the power button. This has resolved the issue of the lock ups. Don't know if this could have anything to do with it?

I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for more than a year now and this just came up. i realized that i cannot connect to the internet using any x86 programs. my usual firefox 2.0.x would not load any webpage but instead stay on a blank page with the correct address in the address bar. whenever i quit firefox it crashes, and similar thing happens for safari, or IE7 x86. i can only access the internet with IE7x64. i did not do anything between the last time i could access the internet with other programs fine, and the first time i come across this problem. my windows updater is turned off and no updates have been installed during either. and i dont know if this is the same problem, the just-in-time debugger keeps coming up and ask if i want to debug. if i close the window it reopens, and if i say yes a message box says "cannot create appication folder" or something like that.wonder if anyone knows what the problem is? another problem, this one with IE7:since first day using IE7 i have had problem installing plugins to it. everytime i visit a page with a adobe flash file on, IE would prompt me to install the flash player plugin, sometimes twice in a row, while nothing actually happens. same goes for java.

My APP folder under my user folder and the Program Data folder on Local C: Computer, both just disappeared. They are missing and not showing. My folder options check marks are where they should be. I tried Brink's solution in the registry and my missing folders as well as folders that are showing all look the same as far as data and pathes and stuff.
In other words, the missing ones look the same as the ones that are showing, so what is there to change? They all show %userprofile% in front of them. I don't know what made these two important folders disappear. I just don't know how to get them back. I have Vista 32 bit.

I think I've found why my hdd inexplicably has 20gb less hd space available than it should... it's in the AppData folder of my older user profile that corrupted and has since been replaced. And now I can't the profile folder or the AppData within it, and i really do need that 20gb as i'm on my last .7, and certain programs have decided they don't want to work under such paltry conditions. It stopped showing up in the UA window in the control panel when in corrupted, but it's still there in c:/windows/users, so I can't remove it the 'right' way. i've tried unchecking the read-only box, but progress stopped about halfway through. (An error occoured applying attributes to the file: xxxx. Access is denied. Ignore?) Also, is it normal for AppData to be ~20gb on a non-corrupted profile? I'm running Vista 32 home basic

I have purchased a new desktop (a 64 bit Dell XPS 430)that will come with a Vista Home Premium. The desktop will have one user.
I plan to partition its HD using a tool like pmagic. Partition C will have the OS. The new partition D will be for user data.
I would like to move the /user folder that contains users files (e.g., documents, audio, video, downloads, etc) to the new partition D. (This is how I maintained my many XP systems: alluser data, except settings, were on partition D).
What is the most optimal approach? I have read Microsoft article73760 entitled "Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide."

Does anybody out there know if there's a free antivirus app that works with Vista? My Norton subscription ran out and don't think Norton is worth what Symantec charges. I know Computer Associates had a very good app for winxp, can't seem to find the same for Vista.

Running Vista Ultimate on a Dell laptop. Suddenly all names show as date modified. Tried the registry 'bags' resets and checking folder type under 'Customize This Folder...' When i right click on the columns, the name column (and a few others) are not available... anywhere. All file and folder names show as the Date modified, except for folder names which show in the Navigation Pane. Tried creating a new Administrator account - same thing, safe mode - same thing. Copied files to another computer and they are fine. Also can access files round about through explorer and then typing in a file name. Tried SFC/scannow - ok. Full virus and spyware scan with AVG AV and AS and Hijack This - clean. System Restore and disk cache are turned off because of good speed increase, so needless to say i cannot go back. Even if i could i would rather know what is causing this issue. Is there an area of the registry which holds the column names? Also not sure if this is related but Search fails to initialize.

I am running a small home network. Configuration: My DSL WLAN router Zyxel Prestige 660HW-67 acts also as a 4-Port switch with 100 Mbits/s. Attached to this router are
1. Vista Business x86 SP1 with RTL8139/810x-Family onboard
2. Dell T105 server running Windows Home Server SP2 (Windows 2003)
3. Windows XP SP3 using WLAN
Problem: The Vista PC will transfer data to WHS or XP with very low bandwidth (150 kbits/s) The other way round will work with more than 10 Mbits/s from the WHS. Transfering data betwee WHS and XP will work fine in bot directions. So it looks like Vista is blocking outbound traffic. The Vista PC also runs F-Secure Internet Security 2009. But te firewall allows all traffic in my home domain (mask 255.25.255.0). I uninstalled the network adapter, installed the newest driver from Realtek but no change in the low outbound traffic.

I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.

Running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on HP Pavilion TX 1250ee laptop. I have a problem logging into Windows Vista. I get the screen up which allow me to select my account and enter a password. Then I get a welcome message. Trouple is it goes no further. The Screen went black with only a white cursor showing. Seconds later, an error showed up saying failed to set data for 'Shell' I've left it for few hours but nothing changed. I did some troubleshooting like testing the Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test in BIOS and everything was pass. I tried to login through safe mode and fortunatlly it's ok. but I don't exactlly know what's the problem? Before it did happen I was creating CD recovery for my computer using the Recovery Manager. Also, there was some updates from Windows which I think what cause the problem. I'm still troubleshooting and waiting for any respond from you guys.

I installed Vista home premium OEM about 9 months ago and today I got a balloon message saying "I have 8 days left to install Vista. Back up all important data" The balloon messages have appeared recently, but I wasn't quick enough to read it all and I didn't believe it anyway. Just to see, I went through the process of reinstalling, but it was going to be a new install wiping all files and data from my C drive, so I cancelled the install. Would anyone know why this is happening after 9 months and is there anyway I can get around a new install? I have been using Acronis to back up, can I use it to put my settings/files/data back, or will I end up with balloon messages again?

I get following error message when at XP and trying to see a shared folder on Vista: "HPdesktop not available. You might not have permission." "Logon failure: user account restrictions. Possible reasons are passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions or a policy restriction has been enforced." I do not use passwords and have not set any hour restrictions, therefore, only thing remaining is policy restriction.

In XP the backup feature was very extensive, highly configurable and trustworthy. It was the only OS in each I had to do disaster recovery and I can prove from experience that it works (Windows Server versions use the same). You could schedule several types of backup (Normal, Differential, incremental, etc) and could get NT backup to compress the catalogue, which if you have lots of highly compressible documents (DOCs, etc) can reduce the size of the catalogue quite considerably.
Yesterday I asked Vista to do a full backup on the new HD. It only gave me 1 option, which was to choose the destination (the new HD). I did not find options for scheduling, types of backup and compression. This morning after the backup has finished the backup folder that Vista created was 138 MB.
Now please tell me, how come Vista creates a 138 MB backup folder if I now only have 110 GB of data in the disk? Where did it get the extra 28 GB from? If you are going to justify saying I now need to buy a backup application, don't bother. It was there in XP and it worked. It would have cost MS absolutely nothing to leave it there. I don't even trust the backup that Vista did, so I am left with the feeling that I ended up wasting 138 GB of space for nothing.

When I go into the C: Drive.. it shows program files.. and then it also shows a Program Files (x86) folder.. why do I have both, and one is 32 bit. Whats it for, what should I use it for. or do the things you try and install that are 32 bit go in there, and the others go in the normal file?? Please let me kno what the deal is with that.
One last question, I just got a new system built.. and now I wanna take the HD from my old system, add it to my new one.. and move everything over, is it just that simple. plug it in.. let my computer see it. open and drag everything. or is there ways to do it. Like I don't wanna just drag everything or I'd have 2 of everything. and it would take forever to do it all folder at a time. So what should I do. Open my Music and drag it all into My music new system. so the folder stays and stuff inside get transfered. or what?
whats the best way to just get all my programs, and all my files over..Should I transfer over all the install files.. or should I redownload and reinstall all the stuff I need online.. to make sure i get 64 bit ones if available..?? Let me kno please!! I'm going to do it tonight.
