i was wondering if someone could tell me if there is a way to go back to the old way my computer was before i installed the update for vista...i hate the new way and lost all my icons and data....
View 8 Repliesyesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista
as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.
here is a small comparison of my situation:
- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old
- Windows.old contains:
-- my old user settings
-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)
-- the old windows folder himself
- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore
so here are my key questions:
1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?
2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...
i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native language...
HP Compaq Desktop - Vista Home Premium. Installed Intel Grapfic update (recomended by Microsoft for SP1 installation. Sure enough, SP1 appeared for download....and downloaded successsfully. Everything working good. But.......now, after the computer has been asleep overnight, when I wake it up, the screen resolution has dropped from 1280-1024 to 800-600.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter inserting the SD card in my computer, I selected to view the files. I stared scrolling down the list of thumbnails. I went to the bottom to view the last picture when explorer froze. I then closed explorer I then removed the SD card from the reader When I inserted the SD card explorer returned the message this drive is not formatted, do you want to format? I answered no. I then removed the SD card from the reader. When I inserted the card in the camera, there were no images on the card. For some reason it seems that exploer marked the files for deletion and perhaps marked the disk as unformatted Is this possible? If so, is there a way to recover?

According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Once again Go figure!! Running Vista Business 32bit here in the good old USA and of course the English versionVista is and has always been updated right on schedule....

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive which i took out of an old computer and which has lots of data on it, i bought an external hard drive case and when i connect it to my computers, i have two one vista and one xp it tells me in computer management that it is unallocated, does this mean that i have lost all my data on the hard drive, also it shows up in device manager but not on my computer on the vista computer , and its the same on the xp computer, the blue led light on the external hard drive case stays blue for about 10
seconds then goes off, the hard drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 ,160 Gbytes, and the case is from ads technologies usbx-834.
As far as I can determine, this update (released 22Oct08) does not work, at least not with Windows Vista Home Premium. I had update 7 running, and got an update notification for Release 10 earlier today. Downloaded and installed the update, tried the Java test page, Firefox (both 3.0.3 and today's Minefield beta-test for Firefox 3.1) hung. Tried the update in IE7, that, too, hung.
Went to Control Panel, clicked on the Java icon, had some problems opening it; when it did finally open, I went into Advanced and found that Update 10 was not recognizing IE. Opened IE, redownloaded the off-line update, to see if that worked; answer is, no, it still did not recognize IE. Back to Java, found the off-line installed for Update 7, removed 10, reinstalled 7; Java works once again. In the midst of this aggravation, trying to figure out what the problem was, I did find one link to an article that said Update 10 had been delayed due to some unspecified problem. Seems to me that, at least for Vista Home Premium, there is still at least one unspecified problem with Update 10.
im not sure if anybodys gonna know what im talking about because im a swedish vista-user and therefore using a swedish usb-modem. i know nothing about computers so i dont know if a modem called huwaei E220 is known outside of sweden. anyway, thats the name of the modem im trying to get to work on my vista laptop. ive called telia (my internet provider) support and ive done everything theyve told me to do. i upgraded the modem accordingly, yet im still experiencing problems. the modem works on my stationary comp, and always has, but when i try to get it to work on my vista laptop it does not. before i upgraded it didnt even recognize that something had been attatched, but now every time i put the usb in it starts to install the proper programs but then after a few seconds it says that the installation failed. it tells me data interface couldnt be installed, and also another program - huwaei modem 'something something' (i dont remember). and i click on 'retry' but no luck. it says i should put my disc for data interface in.. but i dont have one. gee wiz, i dont even know what data interface is.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI run on Windows Vista Business x64 SP1. I was updating a while back, and an update failed with an error code. So I followed the error code in Windows Help and Support, and it asked me to delete all the updates in my update folder and then try updating again. I did that, and now update gives me the 80070424 code, which is access denied.
So, here are the solutions I tried: sfc /scannow (cmd prompt was in admin) It does find corrupt files, except it can't start Windows Repair Service to repair it. So I tried going into Services.msc to turn Windows Modules Installer to Manual. However, since I technically "never updated", that is not in Services..................
After posting my original thread and noting probs with start up repair, my local computer man has said he has had a few people with problems with their computers and that he can fix if if i bring it in - this will not involve losing all my data either. So as I know how good he is i will be taking it in for repair. Check out your local repair centres for help. He also advised me never to accept any updates from vista!! How come Microsoft have not even acknowledged there is a problem with these updates yet? Where is their moral responsibility?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer was infected with Vista Guardian 2010 two days ago. I first ran a full scan using McAfee but didn't detect anything. Following a friend's advice, I then ran Windows Update on the system. After restarting, I lost my desktop, only a small window saying "Personalizing the personal setting of your Internet Explorer" and it stayed there for ever. I managed to get online through Task Manager by hiting ctrl+alt+del. Then I downloaded Microsoft Security Essential and it found two malwares.
I clicked "Remove Now" to the first one and my desktop came back. So when the second message prompted me to "Restart Now", I restared my computer while the scanning was still running. After restarting, everything was fine except a bit slower than before. But when I tried to open any .exe file (like IE browser, Firefox browser, MS Security Essential), none of them would open. The system keeps asking me which software I want to use to open the file, and still wouldn't open. I cannot open any browsers and cannot get online now. What should I do? (I tried in Safemode, and didn't work either).
My last "out of range" recovery attempt caused me to lose some data. I'm using a Compaq SR5410F with Vista and have been dealing with the standard "out of range" message quite frequently. I'm aware of the "out of range" fix but I have a 22" LCD and do alot of graphics, 800x600 doesn't suit me, XP gave me better than 1024x960 and I don't think that Vista is the OS for me but when I bought this computer it was only offered with Vista.
Last night, I could not get to safe mode nor to a command prompt, the only screen available was the recovery utility and the only option was to reformat the Windows partition and once the recovery started, I shut down immediately once I realized that I'd lose my files but it was too late, the only screen that would show up was the recovery screen. I have heard that the data still resides on the drive and now that I've reinstalled all of my software, I need to know whether the lost files can ever be recovered.
I just checked "YES" to accept a dozen updates. (some Windows, some HP). While updating, the updater re*arranged my desktop icons. Before this happens again, where is the utility that stores their position? If Windows provides that function, I cannot find it.

2. Update changed my desktop giving me new icons and a new wallpaper. But my files in My Pictures and My Documents were missing.
3. I used the Start Search to locate them and cut-pasted them into the My Pictures and My Documents folders in the new interface.
4. I shutdown my computer after I was done using it.
5. I turned on my computer again and Windows reverted back to the older (pre-update) interface.
6. I checked and to my luck the My Pictures and My Documents folders were empty again........
I've been having update problems with my Vista Home Premium x64 the last few months. Basically what is happening is that there are multiple installs of the same updates, and then once in a while update will ask me to once again install said updates. This happens on and off, randomly it seems. Until the other day, when I downloaded some new updates. Now one continually wants me to update even though its been "successfully" installed according to the update manager. The update in question is KB937287 a prerequisite for SP1 it seems. Viewing update history indicates this update has been installed 3 times, and all are successful - but I've just checked again and once more its asking me to download and install this update.
The previous updates I had trouble with are:
windows live mail x 3
windows photo gallery x 3
windows live toolbar 3.01 x 3
windows live writer x 3
I was using remote desktop from my win2000 to my vista yesterday completely fine. however id been having some trouble with the vista machine and reinstalled vista. Today I allowed remote assistance on my vista machine and found i couldnt connect. I looked it up and realised that the remote desktop, usually under the remote assistance option, was gone. I had set vista to install the recommended updates only, but being vista, about 5 out of the 25 didnt install. Im guessing the remote desktop functionality is in one of these updates i have not installed, my question is: which one. Or is it not in the "recommended" updates, and if so, could you give me a clue which updates i should be installing to return remote desk... However if there is some kind of command that unlocks it or something, even better! This forum looks great, im sorry to start with a qustion though D;!!!

Now I have these issues: My computer will come on but the mouse won't move. A keyboard appears on my screen (right under the box where I enter my password) I don't know if I have a bug or if the updates did this. What does it sound like to you? Now 5 months later is states that I need to validate. I guess whatever was running on my system was temporary. Does anyone know that if I purchase a new product key this will solve my issue or do I have to purchase a full version? Here's my dilemma: I installed Service Pack 1 via Windows website download manager, and after a fashion, it appeared to have installed and it rebooted my system. It clearly shows as having been installed according to Windows Update History. [Additionally, Service Pack 2 is not offered as a download, but the rest of my query, please.] HOWEVER, according to Microsoft, when I click START > right click COMPUTER, at the top of that resulting page and beneath my version of Vista it should show "Service Pack 1."
In my case, it does not! FURTHER, I downloaded and ran Windows 7 Update Advisor, the results show I need to download and install Service Pack 1. I'm aware that I can download. or order on CD, each of the Service Packs and install, starting with Service Pack 1 before attempting to install Service Pack 2. Why does Service Pack 1 show as installed in Windows Update History, but does NOT seem to be installed according to the two other instances/sources I've mentioned above?

View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning Vista Ultimate on a Dell laptop. Suddenly all names show as date modified. Tried the registry 'bags' resets and checking folder type under 'Customize This Folder...' When i right click on the columns, the name column (and a few others) are not available... anywhere. All file and folder names show as the Date modified, except for folder names which show in the Navigation Pane. Tried creating a new Administrator account - same thing, safe mode - same thing. Copied files to another computer and they are fine. Also can access files round about through explorer and then typing in a file name. Tried SFC/scannow - ok. Full virus and spyware scan with AVG AV and AS and Hijack This - clean. System Restore and disk cache are turned off because of good speed increase, so needless to say i cannot go back. Even if i could i would rather know what is causing this issue. Is there an area of the registry which holds the column names? Also not sure if this is related but Search fails to initialize.

If you should suddenly find that C:Program DataApplication DataApplication DataApplication Data... is repeating itself ad nausium, try deleting either the first or the last of the repetitions. (I deleted the last one and they all disappeared.) Then, go to your Recycle Bin and you will find it there with a folder size of zero, which will seem odd, since when it was deleted mine was nearly one gig and I have heard the size of the repetitions sometimes grow as large as 40 gigs. In any case, restore it. You should find that the repetitions no longer exist and the the folder is back to the size it was originally. The files will show the current date under Date modified and Date created (with several Date modified exceptions). I hope this works for you. I also hope my Application Data folder stays like it is from now on.

If I force to install the new drive, Vista Update still inform the best drive is the older, and the CCC (Catalyst control center) still not installed.
