Tried To Do A Vista Repair Install - Lost User Settings, Installed Programs Etc.
Sep 26, 2008
yesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista
as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.
here is a small comparison of my situation:
- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old
- Windows.old contains:
-- my old user settings
-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)
-- the old windows folder himself
- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore
so here are my key questions:
1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?
2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...
i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native language...

I installed Vista Ultimate about 8 months ago. This was an upgrade from XP. I just now have had the need to do an uninstall. I went to my Admin User account (although my normal user account has Admin privileges) and when I go to Add/Remove programs, there are no command lines for Uninstall/Remove/Repair programs.
I verified that my normal user account had Admin privileges. Logged into it and it does not have the capability to do any of the above. I even added a new user with Admin privileges, no success. I then re-installed Vista Ultimate as an "upgrade" again, still the same problem. All my user accounts have full security access, so I know that's not it. I've read through the threads and although there are similar admin issues, I haven't seen this specific one. I have tried a couple of the suggestions for other Admin problems to no avail.

I installed a game that had the starforce driver as a requirement. Afterward my computer became unbootable as Vista x64 requires all signed drivers and this starforce driver wasn't. So following the advice of both Windows Vista's error message and some documentation online I did a Repair from the Vista DVD.
After the repair the computer booted but now my profile is severly messed up. I already had to reinstall my antivirus, firefox reverted back to a previous version and lost my profile. and now the buttons that link to my profiles folders (i.e. Documents, Pictures, etc...) on the start menu won't work at all............

I had to install a new Motherboard. The CPU, Hard drive and all the other
hardware are the same. Is there a way to get Vista working again without doing a totally new installation of Vista and all other programs?

They were there just there a couple of days ago, each forum have a very unique, vista like icon and, all of a sudden...I don't think I have changed anything on my USer CP, nor have I installed anything new on my pc (Vista updates today) and yet... they are gone. Not really a big deal but is just a bother to be loosing some things with my Vista x64 OS. I feel like the computer is either hunted or I have been hit with a virus/spyware/malaware but I did a whole check-up and the pc is clean.

I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:
* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.
* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.
* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.
* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW
Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?

I have a retail version of Vista Home Premium Upgrade which I used to upgrade XP home edition OEM around 6 months ago. Tomorrow I`m upgrading my Processor and Motherboard and would like to do a fresh install of Vista if I can. The problem is I have lost my XP serial key (was stuck to the case as a sticker and was peeled off and chewed up by my 2 year some months ago). What options do I have to do a fresh install? Am i better off reinstalling Vista over the top of my old version? I would though really like to do a Format C: though and get a nice fresh install for my nice new system.

As SP1 looms, it's probably time to go back to Vista after I tried it when on the Beta and RC releases and had a few problems with compatibility with other bits of kit. In November I upgraded my system with Vista Ultimate. When it was returned to me I followed each prompt and did everything during installation it asked of me. Now 5 months later is states that I need to validate. I guess whatever was running on my system was temporary. Does anyone know that if I purchase a new product key this will solve my issue or do I have to purchase a full version? If I do have to purchase a full version can it be installed over my already installed and running vista on my system?

When you install Vista, you get to a point where you enter and user name, a pc name and set the background etc.. Immediately after it performs a performance profile and it asks you to wait. While you wait some messages display about the new features of Vista... The first line of the first message displayed reads.. "Time is precious" .... yet its asking you to wait while it checks your pc's performance

Running Vista Home Premium on my laptop. Worked fine. I bought a new LCD TV which has a VGA input on it. I connected a VGA cable to TV and to my laptop. Turned laptop on. It must have recognized my new TV/monitor. When I selected the input source on the TV/monitor as "PC" the pc output went to both my computer and the large TV.
not knowing when to leave well enough alone, I got into the personalize display section and started fooling around with resolultion settings, lost video to both screens, got it back, not sure how, but just to the laptop. The personalize display program can recognize both 1 and 2 monitor for me. 2 is the TV/monitor. As a setting in this program, I have the monitor 2 (TV) checked to "send desktop to the monitor" and unchecked "this is my main monitor. Well the background of the desktop goes to the TV but other than the background, nothing else. No icons, no program output, e.g. pictures I plan to show via the TV etc

I have a question about Vista. I currently have XP installed however it seems to be a corrupted install as software, i.e. Internet Explorer, downloaded software, etc, gets uninstalled and won't work everytime I turn off the PC. I was wondering do I need to purchase the full version of Vista Basic or can I use the upgrade. I have read on one website that the upgrade won't work but on another website it states that corruptions will be repaired with the upgrade. Which is correct?

One machine is a recent build, the other I have just rebuilt this morning - so it's a brand new install of Vista, with nothing else installed as yet. There is no Anti-virus software installed on either machine and, on each machine, I have switched off Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.
I have not yet installed the wireless adapter driver, and on the other machine I have disabled it. There is a folder on each machine's hard drive, called C:Somename (different names on each machine) and these are marked as shared, with Everyone set as Co-owner. I have also been into the advanved sharing settings and set the permissions for Everyone to full control...............

I've been using an administrator account for all my daily computing needs. I understand that this is a bad idea so I created another account, standard account, to use. Is there a way to transfer all my settings and program shortcuts etc to this new account or does everything have to be done individually. If this is the case then it's way too much fooling around for my liking and I'll stick with the administrator account.

I have windows vista premium and there are 2 users on our computer. Whenever I load any software on my side, it also goes on to the other side and visa versa. When we had xp, this was not a problem as our settings were saved after each session. So my question is, how do I keep our settings separate in vista?

Vista Home Premium, began getting message that c:users(user name)AppDataRoaming is corrupt and unreadable. Used Dell online technical support. They copied all the files under the username to a backup location, created a new username, and then copied the files back in. Basically copied the directory C:users(user name) to C:users(user name2). Then deleted the user name that wasn't working in the control panel. Looks great except all my wife's emails are now gone - and she had multiple folders with emails stored in them and thousands of deleted emails she referred to. Mad as a hornet!
Is there any way of recovering the deleted email files and then getting them back into Mail? I am trying Pareto Logic Data Recovery Program to search for the directory that was deleted that stores the emails C:users(user name)AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows MailLocal Folders. So far it is only finding folders with (user name2).I realize now I should have exported all the mail to a backup file before deleting the username, but the tech guy didn't tell me to do that before we deleted the old user name.

I am having a problem with programs that I had downloaded, installed and used disappearing on me the next time I turn on my computer. When I go to the shortcut and click on it, it tells me "the program or file this shortcut refers to has been changed or removed". This is getting extremely annoying. I am unsure what is going on. I am running Windows Vista Basic and Norton 360. This is a brand new laptop (purchased in the last month).
This has been going on for about a week or so now. When I first brought it home, I had no problems whatsoever with downloaded and installed files disappearing, now it seems that every time I download a program this happens. What can I do to fix this? I also have installed Norton 360 on my Windows XP laptop and haven't had this problem there. I am guessing it is a Vista-only problem.

I have an HP notebook with Vista Home Premium and after running SFC I have a few corrupted files.
Question is there a way to bring in the original files when the OEM didn't send an install DVD or will offer one at all?
All I have is the recovery partition with the option to "repair to original factory condition" which from what I gather means erasing all my settings and personal files.
I have made a recovery disc (from the partition) and I have the "Anytime Upgrade DVD," and I'm curious is there any way to access the upgrade DVD to get to those files or even do a real repair of Vista without losing settings and personal files?

In wanting to do a repair install (keeping existing programs etc), on running Recovery CD, I get the message.
"Upgrade has been disabled vand cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent than the versiopn you are currently running"
I'm running Vista Home Premium (fully updated) but suspecting that I may have a problem, I thought I could do a repair install but it seems all I can do is either a clean install and thus lose everything or upgrade to I assume Business or Ultimate Editions of Vista. Why can't I do a repair install from Vista Recovery CD?
