I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.

Trying to move MS Word shortcut icon from Start Menu "All Programs" area, I deleted it - oops! How to find/create or otherwise return the icon? Now, to use MS Word, I must open a past Word document, delete all contents and begin my new Word document.

I have a problem accessing some programs in my start menu. I use Windows Vista Home Premium. Some programs are accessible (such as iTunes) and some are not (such as Nero ShowTime). When I compare the properties of the Start Menu links for the accessible and the nonaccessible programs, I notice differences: In the Properties windows of the nonaccessible programs, there is no "Compatibility" tab and the "Target field" is grayed out, as are the "Open File Location" and "Change Icon" buttons. I don't get an error message when I click on the non-accessible links, I just get nothing. btw, I can access the programs from the Quick Launch bar or from Windows Explorer, but that is a hassle.

I recently had to reinstall Vista Windows and had to copy some of my program files across from the 'Old Windows' program file to the new Windows program file and they are now not all showing in the Start - All Programs menu or in the Programs and Features 'Uninstall or Change a program' list. How can I get all my programs into these two locations?

I'm having some start menu trouble. Newly installed programs usually dump their icons here "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms" for some reason anything that is placed in this folder won't display on the start menu, but does via explorer, Has anyone got any ideas to overcome this?

When clicking the same program from the start menu -> program folder, it will run. What could be? I am not using the classic menu. I have tried to re-pin them, but still they will not open??, all other programs are ok.

On my laptop, the Start Menu/All Programs items are listed with the Single Program items first and the Folders after them. Normally on the Start Menu/All Programs, the Folders are listed first and the individual programs after them. How do I get this order back? I tried going to Start/properties/start menu/customize and click and unclicked the "Sort All Programs...." feature and the order remains the same.

I installed Photoshop CS3 today on Vista x64 Ultimate and gave it whizz to see if it worked ok - which it did - but i noticed that the start menu headings for the Photoshop programs are highlighted in yellow. Here's a screen grab:
The thing is, when i right-click on the yellow highlights to send the Photoshop icon to my desktop as a shortcut, i get no menu just the Aero mouse cursor rotating for a split-second and then the right-click doesn't work at all nor the shut-down button doesn't work! Now, i got the program off a mate who assured me it was from an original disc, but now i'm not too sure as it has all the hallmarks of a copy with a dodgy attachment - and no, i didn't see the disc in question as i just transfered the data from a folder on his drive onto a USB pen.

I just started with a new Vista Laptop and need some help setting up some account info. Using WinXP I simply accessed the other users Start Menu (Programs) and edited what shortcuts would appear for each user. This was a simply way to control the Start menu by keeping the "heavy" stuff out of view for inexperienced users. Can't seem to do this using Vista - the Documents and Setting folder is not accessible even to administrator accounts and even the users own account. How do I edit the Start/programs menu for a user under Vista?

Most of the items on the right of the Start Menu have special attributes, in that they show an info tooltip on mouseover and have specially tailored right-click menus. My Recent Files item seems to have lost its special attributes and the right-click menu is now just a standard one, with no option to clear the list (if I want to do this, I now have to go to my roaming profile and delete the shortcuts manually). What caused this, and how do I fix it? (I searched for a sample of tooltip text like 'See the disk drives' in the registry, but nothing came up)

yesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista
as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.
here is a small comparison of my situation:
- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old
- Windows.old contains:
-- my old user settings
-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)
-- the old windows folder himself
- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore
so here are my key questions:
1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?
2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...
i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native language...

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bits installed on my computer. Along with installing this, I also installed tons of drivers etc. however I do not need all of them at the start of every boot. So I wanted to delete them from the startup list, but this is not possible. When I go to Windows Defender > Launch programs, and click on the programs I want to disable from launching along with Windows, the options to Delete or Disable go grey.

I can't get access to certain folders, everything was fine until my HD went KaPuT, so I installed a new dual 160GB raid system so I won't lose it all again, the only problem is now that I reloaded Vista Ultimate I can't access anything, I have turned UAC off, and gave permissions, and turned over ownership of everything to me, there is nobody else listed as a user in my system, yet when I use my AutoCad LT 2008 and try to access files, when I click on the directory I need to get into, it does nothing, I can get into other ones, but not any of the ones with little tiny curved arrows in boxes on the lower left. I have access of them in explorer, but not through LT 2008
