Lost MS Word Icon From Start Menu
Mar 23, 2008
Trying to move MS Word shortcut icon from Start Menu "All Programs" area, I deleted it - oops! How to find/create or otherwise return the icon? Now, to use MS Word, I must open a past Word document, delete all contents and begin my new Word document.

I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

I pinned a exe to the Vista Basic Start Menu. At first it displayed the proper icon but for some reason now it displays a generic icon. I posted this problem before but I had screwed up and had to reinstall the program (not the same as this one) which fixed the problem. I've deleted IconCache.db in my user folder but it did no good. How might I prevent this from occurring?

I noticed last night that the icon was missing from the start menu for Spywareblaster. I'm not sure if it has been missing since I installed it, but I tried deleting the icon cache and uninstalling/reinstalling Spywareblaster, but the icon remains missing. If I right click on the shortcut within the menu and select properties-change icon, the correct icon is shown there. Not a major problem, just a bit annoying that the usual fixes don't seem to correct it.

I need help guys!I have an empty torrent file that shows up on my start menu when I search it. I try to delete it and Vista doesn't let me. I get this message *"This is no longer located in c:usersmy cpu nameappadta oamingutorrent. Verify the item's location and try again."* The problem is that the actual file doesn't exist on my computer any more but it still shows up when I search for it from the start menu. Vista doesn't let me delete or rename it.
-taking ownership of the file
-using a unlocker program I downloaded
-using a file shedder program I downloaded
and none of these worked for me. Does anyone have any other ideas or solutions to this problem. Its driving me nuts!

I accidentally deleted the Mail icon from the Start Menu (Vista Ultimate x32) and a ballon came up with the steps to restore this which instantly disappeared. I run Office 2007 with Outlook as the default mail client. I did manage to create the shortcut for Outlook 2007 and drop it on the Start Menu and it works. However, on right click it does not give the three options (E-Mail Accounts; Data Files; Show Profiles) that was part of the standard options. I am able to access these options from the Control Panel (Mail) but would prefer to restore the Start Menu. I did re-install Office suite but it did not change. Is there a way to restore this back?

At first I had an apparent common problem: my user profile, which happened to be the admin profile, stopped working and would show error your user profile was not loaded correctly. You have been logged on with a temporary profile yada yada yada yada. Main problem besides the annoyance was I could obviously not find my documents. I called Dell tech support. They found all my valuable WORD documents. We then created a new folder and moved all the valuable files to it. So far so good. Now......Dell tech decides he wants to check for any MS updates. There were 14 updates needed. Downloaded and installed. Same problem with the user profile - but now the WORD documents are GONE. Nowhere. Folder everything gone after the MS updates. Plenty of free C drive space (like only 30% full) and plenty or RAM, so it should not have needed the disk space. Problem is after 4 hours the Dell tech could not recover the files. He found some *.temp files but when machine was shut down those disappeared, too.
Machine is running Vista and has been flawless for 7 months until the problem with the user profile. BTW System Restore will not work. We tried that first thing to try and fix the user profile issue. It returns the message it did not work completly once it brings the desktop back up. It did not work before the Windows update nor after the Windows update. Where did the WORD doc files go after the MS updates? Am I screwed? Any software available or ways to recover these very valuable lost files? I know I know shoulda woulda backed them up. That's fine -

I have been working on a chapter of my thesis, recently moving it all to my USB so I can work at uni too. Well, its totally disappeared, after I tried to save it tonight - it came up with an error, saying the file path was gone and that it would make a rescue save and close down! I tried to close everything else properly, but this one file just had the error message and I had to click ok.... and then it was completely gone. I wrote down the ~wrl file number, but searching for it yields nothing. There is one 'rescue file' but it has endnote reference coding (bibliographic software) and no text.
This isn't the first time this has happened, but the last time was years ago when Vista first came out and I learnt to put files on the C: to work one them - I forgot. I have recently changed my anti-virus software too, I've heard that can cause trouble. I have downloaded "Undelete" and it seems to be scanning forever. Before I googled I backed up my other chapters and emailed them to myself - but I backed them up (zipped to a folder) ON the USB, didn't realise that would be a bad idea, grr.

I have a .doc file saved and Vista shows a thumbnail of what it really looks like. However, in my Documents folder, none of my .doc files are displayed as a thumbnail but instead all show the standard MS Word icon (I do have this one OpenOffice drawing file saved in my Documents which displays as a thumbnail). My questions is simple: What determines whether or not Vista will display a thumbnail for a .doc file?

I am not certain, but I suspect either Vongo or Spybot2009 was responsible for one icon-(minimize all windows) disappearance from Quick launch at taskbar. Now I have to right click taskbar for "show the desktop" option to minimize all windows. Thanks God the "switch between windows" icon stayed put.
How do I restore the missing icon?

I own an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop, that runs Windows Vista Ultimate. The other day I noticed that the battery icon in the lower right hand corner had dissappeared. I tried looking in "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and under the "Notification Area" but the power box under "System icons" was avaliable for checking.

I lost media player icon and could not access the player, but when I put a DVD in, it came back. Now I am afraid to exit because I have no icon to be able to call up the programme again. Do I have to resort to inserting a DVD every time? Won't work with a CD (defaults to Itunes)

I have Office XP (2002) installed on Vista. Word was working fine until I downloaded a number of recommended Windows Updates. Then it behaved strangely, so I restored my computer to the day before I installed the updates. Now Word is working fine again, but I'm getting an Update message to install SP3. I'm skittish about doing so because I don't want Word to start acting up again.

Most of the items on the right of the Start Menu have special attributes, in that they show an info tooltip on mouseover and have specially tailored right-click menus. My Recent Files item seems to have lost its special attributes and the right-click menu is now just a standard one, with no option to clear the list (if I want to do this, I now have to go to my roaming profile and delete the shortcuts manually). What caused this, and how do I fix it? (I searched for a sample of tooltip text like 'See the disk drives' in the registry, but nothing came up)

This is driving me nuts and was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. When passing over any other item the item information is displayed right away with no problems. But, when I pass the mouse pointer over a particular item, in the start menu the system hangs and the 'highlight' stops over particular item without displaying item information. (in MS Access it's referred top as the Control Tip Text). After about 20 seconds the item info gets displayed and things go back to normal..........

i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..
just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...

I stumbled upon vistax64 while researching superfetch in vista and honestly out of all the sites I have been to this one is the most informative and up to date. I found the tutorials section to be a real big help in fact I almost have vista setup just the way I want it because of the guides. I do have a quick question I miss the way XP did its start menu as in hover over a item to go to its menu, vista you have to actually click the menu, anyway to return that to the way it used to be while still keeping the default vista look?

This applies to XP as well as Vista, the solution (if there is one) may also work for both, that's why I decided to crosspost instead of posting a separate question for each OS. Has someone found a way to add new top-level menus to the start menu, the way you could in Win2000, and still can in XP and Vista if you switch to the "classic" start menu?
