Oct 4, 2009I have lost the icon to my "D" drive (Recovery Files) and tried both methods of rebuilding/resetting the icon cache mentioned in a former thread. Unfortunately, nothing worked for me.

Lost Icon ... How To Restore?
Dec 6, 2008I am not certain, but I suspect either Vongo or Spybot2009 was responsible for one icon-(minimize all windows) disappearance from Quick launch at taskbar. Now I have to right click taskbar for "show the desktop" option to minimize all windows. Thanks God the "switch between windows" icon stayed put.
How do I restore the missing icon?

Mar 23, 2008I own an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop, that runs Windows Vista Ultimate. The other day I noticed that the battery icon in the lower right hand corner had dissappeared. I tried looking in "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and under the "Notification Area" but the power box under "System icons" was avaliable for checking.
Lost Volume Control Icon
Mar 23, 2008I lost the volume control icon in the notification area. When I go to properties for the notification area the volume check box is grayed out. I've also looked in the Creative software but there is no option that I can find for the volume control icon. Any ideas on how to get it back?

Jul 3, 2009I lost media player icon and could not access the player, but when I put a DVD in, it came back. Now I am afraid to exit because I have no icon to be able to call up the programme again. Do I have to resort to inserting a DVD every time? Won't work with a CD (defaults to Itunes)

Mar 23, 2008It seems as though I have lost my media center icon or for that matter I can???t find the application on any of my hard drives either, I can see that it has been licensed to me on the media center home page but can not find it anywhere on my computer. 1. 48.3 GB used space on Local Disk (C When I Click Local Disk C then Properties, Blue Red Pie (51,940,466,688 bytes)
2. 28.1 GB Size on Disk When I Open C & Select All, Then Click Properties (30,206,545,173 bytes)
3. That's a Difference of 20.2 GB & I Checked Show hidden files and folders & Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
4. 33.2 GB is the size of my Compressed Backup on my Acronis TrueImage11 C Drive Backup to an External HD, so I think the 48.3 GB is true. Where could the 20.2 GB be hiding?
Dvd Drive Is Lost
Apr 11, 2008I'm running vista ultimate 32 bit. last dayas i a dealing with a very strange issue... i turn on pc, everything works fine. Suddenly my dvd drive(nec)is lost from my computer icon and also, i cannot see it in device manager!!!making a restart is not solving the problem. The only way to see again the drive is to turn pc off, change sata port on drive and when i turn on again the pc it starts to install it again. Foe some hour dvd drive works and is recognized perfectly. but suddenly(without nothing to do!!!)just waiting and looking the pc, dvd drive is lost again and tha hard disk led stays continiously on! any other functions works fine...

Nov 1, 2009I have searched over the lands of google and these forums and I have come across similar yet not the same problem as mine. It seems that files and folders across my C:/ drive have lost permissions to run. Also, some new files that are created by programs can be not able to run because they are created without permissions.
When clicked upon, they say I do not have permission to run or move etc. I can change this manually by going into properties and owners and changing it. I have no idea why these files are being created without an owner or permissions and I cant seem to get this to stop.
Has Lost C Drive And Will Not Boot
Jun 1, 2008Yesterday morning Vista, wouldn't boot I was promped to use safe mode, last known good configuration etc. Would not start in safe mode or last known good configuration. I finally got the repair from CD to corme up ran repair after 30 minutes or so got message found 0 problems 0 fixed scrool down for details reasion repair failed couldn't find C drive. I later got into safe mode and opened Excel trying to save a work book. couldn't save anthing from safe mode Hard drive light is on. how to boot from C on hard drive?

Feb 6, 2009Since a couple months ago, roughly July of last year, I've been losing disk space on my C drive even when I haven't downloaded a single byte or installed any programs. Though this might sound crazy, I've looked for viruses like a detective, in hopes that it's what's causing this. But I don't have a virus, and I'm down to 16.4 GB out of a 232 GB HDD. I'm going crazy, because since then, I've had a 32 GB average of anything on that drive, and I had a couple games and programs on there even with that in there. In 3 weeks, I've been losing at least 3 GB.
-Deleting every restore point/shadow copy except the most recent
-Overlooked the winsxs folder, it's only 8.35 GB, I can live with that.
-Downloaded TreeSize, found that a folder called [Files], taking up 201,663 MB: should I delete this file? The owner is called 'TrustedInstaller' according to TreeSize.
Lost Space On 300 Gig External Drive
May 19, 2008I have a 300 gig external drive that I use for backups. When I list the folders on the drive and their size, I come up with just under a 100 gigs of used space. The drive shows that I have approx 23 gigs of space left before the drive is full. So here is the question, which one of you guys has my other 170 gigs of storage space.......

Jul 7, 2008I am not sure why but for some reason my c drive is displaying incorrect information. When I view the total space for C: from "My Computer" it displays 21.3 GB of 133GB used. However, when I go into my c drive select all files and folders, right click and select properties, the most space being used in C is 30GB. For some reason my system restores have all been lost. I do not have a vista install disk, but I do have the factory restore that I made upon purchase of my laptop.

Mar 23, 2008I have a hard drive which i took out of an old computer and which has lots of data on it, i bought an external hard drive case and when i connect it to my computers, i have two one vista and one xp it tells me in computer management that it is unallocated, does this mean that i have lost all my data on the hard drive, also it shows up in device manager but not on my computer on the vista computer , and its the same on the xp computer, the blue led light on the external hard drive case stays blue for about 10
seconds then goes off, the hard drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 ,160 Gbytes, and the case is from ads technologies usbx-834.
Change A Drive Icon
Feb 25, 2009When I open up my computer one of the drive letters (E in the right pane has a 3DHA (3D Home Architect) icon in place of what should be a regular drive icon. I guess when I was test installing 3DHA, it somehow messed up that drive icon, though I have no idea why, but their web site offers no help. I've since removed the software but nothing I've tried will allow me to change the icon back to a regular drive icon. I prefer not to download a 3rd party program unless I have to. I've come across a few sites that offered some tips but everthing I've tried only changes the icon in the left pane. In fact the properties for the drive letter in the right pane don't even have a change icon button, anywhere.

Jul 1, 2008not sure if im in the right place..but, Vista seems to have changed my second HD where I keep all my media into a CD Drive, the icon has changed to a CD drive icon in My Computer and the desktop shortcut now asks for a Disc to be inserted when I try to access it... The C drive remains unaffected. Anyone got a fix for this?.

Apr 21, 2009I have a problem with the way my CD/DVD drive icons are showing up in the storage devices window. It seems that my machine is displaying the same icon regardless of the CD or DVD I put into my DVD drive. At one time, I put a Windows XP installation CD in my DVD drive, and the CD/DVD drive icon was replaced by the HP logo. I put another software or game into my DVD drive and I still got the HP logo as the CD/DVD drive icon. So I tried emptying all of my Prefetch files from my Prefetch folder, and I thought I solved the problem when I put the Windows XP CD into the drive and got the regular Setup icon. But when I put a different CD into the drive, the same Windows XP Setup icon showed up. And when I right-clicked 'Properties' on the CD/DVD drive Icon, in some cases there is no icon in the upper-left-hand corner next to the name of the CD.

I multi-boot (Vista Ultimate SP2 on C: & D:, Windows 7 Ultimate on L: ) and the same strange icon appears in Windows Explorer in all the 3 systems I boot. That makes registry editing a question mark....where do I do it, if I do it?
I've run chkdsk and the volume is clean. This is a brand new computer and all was well until I used that drive for the first time yesterday when I backed up my files from my external drive to it.
Any suggestions anyone?
How Do I Change The Icon For A Specific Folder Or Drive?
Jul 29, 2009I would like to set some key folders to have icons that identify what is inside. So my Windows install folder would show a folder with the Windows logo in front. (I have the ICO for that.) But how do you do that? I found a folder that has such a specific icon, but I wasn't successful getting it to work. My example used an icon inside an EXE. My icon is a stand-alone ICO.

May 15, 2010PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
Start Menu Icon But Displays A Generic Icon
Apr 19, 2008I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??
