Lost Data, "out Of Range" Recovery

Aug 4, 2008

My last "out of range" recovery attempt caused me to lose some data. I'm using a Compaq SR5410F with Vista and have been dealing with the standard "out of range" message quite frequently. I'm aware of the "out of range" fix but I have a 22" LCD and do alot of graphics, 800x600 doesn't suit me, XP gave me better than 1024x960 and I don't think that Vista is the OS for me but when I bought this computer it was only offered with Vista.

Last night, I could not get to safe mode nor to a command prompt, the only screen available was the recovery utility and the only option was to reformat the Windows partition and once the recovery started, I shut down immediately once I realized that I'd lose my files but it was too late, the only screen that would show up was the recovery screen. I have heard that the data still resides on the drive and now that I've reinstalled all of my software, I need to know whether the lost files can ever be recovered.

Lost Data On SD Card

May 6, 2008

After inserting the SD card in my computer, I selected to view the files. I stared scrolling down the list of thumbnails. I went to the bottom to view the last picture when explorer froze. I then closed explorer I then removed the SD card from the reader When I inserted the SD card explorer returned the message this drive is not formatted, do you want to format? I answered no. I then removed the SD card from the reader. When I inserted the card in the camera, there were no images on the card. For some reason it seems that exploer marked the files for deletion and perhaps marked the disk as unformatted Is this possible? If so, is there a way to recover?

Remove Dual Recovery Old Data

Oct 11, 2009

I had a cpu fan die and the computer would not turn on, so i thought it was my hard drive. Replaced the hard drive and installed Vista but not completely. Then found that the cpu fan wasn't working, replaced that and put my old drive back in. Now when Vista starts up i get an error screen asking to press enter. When pressing enter i get a choice of 2 vista installations. Only one works, the old one, so i always choose that. For me its not a problem but this freaks out the other employees here. So i need to get rid of the half completed installation. How do i do this?

Data Recovery: Files Are Missing

Dec 28, 2008

I recently rebuilt my machine (see system specs) and when I went to pop in my old HDD as a secondary drive to pull some files from it, Windows decided it needed to run chkdsk on it. I tried to stop it, as this is a 500GB drive so I knew it would take forever, but I couldn't stop it. So after a few hours, it finished and let me in, but now all of the files are missing. This was my old C: (primary) drive, so it should have Windows, Users, Program Data, etc folders but it doesn't. it just has a few empty folders (Nvidia, Intel...) However when you check the properties of the disk, it shows that several GB's are used, so I know my data is around there somewhere. Changing the folder options to view hidden does not help. The OS on this disk was Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

How Data Recovery From Dead Hard Drive To New Machine?

May 12, 2008

I had my hard drive from my laptop die a few days ago. I was able to recover almost all of the files except for a few Windows file to an external hard drive enclosure. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.

Lost Word File - Disappeared, Recovery!

Feb 9, 2009

I have been working on a chapter of my thesis, recently moving it all to my USB so I can work at uni too. Well, its totally disappeared, after I tried to save it tonight - it came up with an error, saying the file path was gone and that it would make a rescue save and close down! I tried to close everything else properly, but this one file just had the error message and I had to click ok.... and then it was completely gone. I wrote down the ~wrl file number, but searching for it yields nothing. There is one 'rescue file' but it has endnote reference coding (bibliographic software) and no text.

This isn't the first time this has happened, but the last time was years ago when Vista first came out and I learnt to put files on the C: to work one them - I forgot. I have recently changed my anti-virus software too, I've heard that can cause trouble. I have downloaded "Undelete" and it seems to be scanning forever. Before I googled I backed up my other chapters and emailed them to myself - but I backed them up (zipped to a folder) ON the USB, didn't realise that would be a bad idea, grr.

Clocking CPU To Around The 3.0-3.2 Ghz Range If Possible

Aug 27, 2008

I'm fairly new to the forums, and a total noob to Vista and 64 bit, but learning fast from all the great info here.

I'm looking into MAYBE clocking my CPU to around the 3.0-3.2 Ghz range if possible.
I've been reading in here for a couple days, getting some idea of the hows and why's, ( or why nots! ) But its very obvious I need alot of help and some good info. So, anyone willing to help me out? First alittle about the machine.

I had it custom built by HP, so the motherboard may not be clockable as most of the high end boards. We'll see.
Q9550 Quad @ 2.83
Front Side Bus ( Processor Dependent ) 1333/1066/800 MHz
8 GB OCZ RAM 800 MHz
2 Seagate 500GB 32 MB HDD's ( 7200 )
1 Seagate 1000GB 32MB HD (7200 )
1GB GeForce 9800GT
PC Power and Cooler 1000W PSU
2 Samsung Opticals

I'd think in preporation, either a better heat sink or a cooler for the CPU is needed, but I havent looked at any base ( stock ) temps at the moment.

Data Protection is a counterfeit application which pretends to be a legitimate security tool. Second Display Shows "Out Of Range"

May 3, 2008

My girlfriend has a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista Home Basic. I set up a second display (17" Hewlett Packard CRT) for her so that she could hook her laptop up, close it and look at the second display on her desk. All was working fine until she changed the resolution on the CRT, and somehow placed it in a setting that was OUT OF RANGE. I have subsequently tried unistalling the video drivers, graphics card, booting it in safe mode and changing the refresh rate, none of which works. It's also worth noting that the display funstions perfectly fine while the laptop lid is open, but reverts to OUT OF RANGE as soon as it is closed.

Won't Copy The Data

Sep 19, 2009

So I just got a new computer, a HP Pavilion running Vista, and I have a older hard drive that I want to copy data from. The hard drive came from a system running XP. It's a older hard drive, a Seagate 80 gig IDE connector hard drive, so I went out and bought a external hard drive device bay -- you just put the hard drive into it and then plug it into a USB port on my computer. If I plug it in, all that happens is every 10 seconds I get a pop up a message saying: "You need to format the disk in Drive J before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" Of course I don't want to format it, I'd lose the data I'm trying to copy! If I click cancel it just keeps bugging me about it and I can't access the HD.
