well i have a laptop with win vista 32 bit already installed on one partition.i have totally three partitions.one with the OS,one with the recovery partition and one just for my files.all three are on the same hard drive.now i recently got win 7 64 bit and want to do a clean install.can i do it without losing all the data in the recovery and other partition???
View 5 RepliesI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.
A customer asked if he created the recovery disc would he still have a complete working recovery partition. He is in fear of creating the disc then losing them.

I know this would be done through boot.ini however i have no idea how to do so. Also id make a seperate partition on my hd of ten gigs just for the backup image.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
I've got a Hp computer that has Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it and I want to remove the partition D which is the recovery partition. I have factory backup dvd's, made my own backup dvd's and have a True Image of the drive with both partitions, so I think I'm covered. Anyone know how to go about removing the complete partition?

I see a list of files that should be there are Dell, Program Files, Sources, Tools, Users and Windows. However, there are folders within folders within folders in these files in my D drive, so I'm wondering if I can safely delete any of them.

First up - this is a dumb way to do stuff. I only did it because I thought Vista would install as XP did (i.e. I'd just need to drop my XP CD in the drive during the installation. I was wrong. Vista upgrades can only be done from inside a previous OS.). I used the XP CD to reformat all of my partitions. I then put XP onto a partition I later planned to use for my page file. I did a default install of XP until I could boot into it, and then (without activating it) dropped the Vista DVD into the drive. I used my keycode there (an upgrade one), and it accepted it. I then directed it to install Vista on the primary partition, so I had a clean install.
Cue several reboots. I then had a clean copy of Vista, and an old copy of XP, which I could reach via a dualboot menu shown at boot time. This was no good to me, I have no use for XP, so I rebooted from the XP CD, and reformatted the partition with XP on. This removed the dual boot screen, and by a bit of BIOS jiggery pokery to make my boot devices order floppy, DVD, Vista partition I was all sorted. I waited a few days before activating just to make sure it was stable, and it has been so far!
I installed Vista on my D partition a while back ago (C drive has XP) and now want to remove it. now I can not access any data on my D partition anymore. I tried run "bootsect /nt52 d:" and it returns this message: "Could not open the volume root directory: The parameter is incorrect. No bootcode was successfully updated." Anyone here got an idea how I can reaccess the data on D partition without formating it first?

I have poked around various places, but no software ive come across works - so far. View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a cpu fan die and the computer would not turn on, so i thought it was my hard drive. Replaced the hard drive and installed Vista but not completely. Then found that the cpu fan wasn't working, replaced that and put my old drive back in. Now when Vista starts up i get an error screen asking to press enter. When pressing enter i get a choice of 2 vista installations. Only one works, the old one, so i always choose that. For me its not a problem but this freaks out the other employees here. So i need to get rid of the half completed installation. How do i do this?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently rebuilt my machine (see system specs) and when I went to pop in my old HDD as a secondary drive to pull some files from it, Windows decided it needed to run chkdsk on it. I tried to stop it, as this is a 500GB drive so I knew it would take forever, but I couldn't stop it. So after a few hours, it finished and let me in, but now all of the files are missing. This was my old C: (primary) drive, so it should have Windows, Users, Program Data, etc folders but it doesn't. it just has a few empty folders (Nvidia, Intel...) However when you check the properties of the disk, it shows that several GB's are used, so I know my data is around there somewhere. Changing the folder options to view hidden does not help. The OS on this disk was Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm assuming a clean install with an upgrade license will be identical to a clean install with a 'full' copy, except that at some point during the process, it will ask for my key for Windows XP? I just want to confirm this is the case before I go buy an upgrade copy. one last question to tack on here - if I have a desktop and a laptop computer will it let me install the same copy and license key of Vista on both? I know some MS products in the past have allowed you to install on more than one computer because they realize a lot of people have more than one computer but they only work with one at a given time.

I plan to partition its HD using a tool like pmagic. Partition C will have the OS. The new partition D will be for user data.
I would like to move the /user folder that contains users files (e.g., documents, audio, video, downloads, etc) to the new partition D. (This is how I maintained my many XP systems: alluser data, except settings, were on partition D).
What is the most optimal approach? I have read Microsoft article73760 entitled "Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide."

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had my hard drive from my laptop die a few days ago. I was able to recover almost all of the files except for a few Windows file to an external hard drive enclosure. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.

I'd like to reclaim the 10 plus Gb on my SSD that holds the recovery partition for Vista on my Toshiba A500 series laptop.
I've already backed up the system to DVD's using the Toshiba recovery disk creator utility.
Anyone know how to reclaim the 10Gb? I'd really like to do it without losing the operating system if possible.
Also, I'm wondering if I do this and things get screwed up will the recovery disks regenerate the recovery partition and take me back to the original state?
I have a160GB external HD with three partitions. I took it out of a laptop (I was using it to run Windows on that laptop), formatted the 'main' partition (approx. 145GB), and installed Linux on it. The machine I was running Linux in is 'dead' now, so I want to format this 'main' partition again (in Windows), so I can use it for storage or whatever. The problem is that when I plug it into my machine running Vista, it 'sees' the 'recovery' partition (still there from when I was using it in the original laptop), but it doesn't 'see' that 'main' partition (the one I had Linux on). I went into Disk Management, and I can see all three partitions, but when I try to access that 'main' partition,it won't let me do anything with it. Right-clicking the partition brings up my options, but they're all grayed out. I realize that I can't open the partition in Windows, since it has Linux on it, but why can't I format it in Disk Management? I have no way to get into the Linux OS to try to uninstall or format it that way, since the machine is 'dead'.
How can I go ahead and format this partition?
If I use truecrypt to encrypt an entiredrive will it affect the recovery partitions ability to function?

I would like to reinstall VISTA (or preferably XP if I can get a copy). I got the computer from a friend who does not remember what disks, if any, came with it. I have SP1 installed but I do not have a recovery disk or an original installation disk. How would I know if there was a installation or recovery disk? Would I likely get anywhere asking Compaq or HP for help?
