Reinstalling: Recovery Drive Is Gone
Sep 16, 2009I inserted the media direct cd for vista like the web site said to do I could see the recovery directory, the c drive and the media drive. it asked me to put in how much space i wanted for the c: so i put in 137 like it said. so now the recovery drive is gone. I put the reinstall dvd in and it says it is copying windows then extending files and then installing files then it goes to the completing installation and then it takes over 2 hours.
when it restarts it has an arrow on the screen and it stops there. on the web site it says it is to come up with a user name and password page but we never see that part. Any idea's what i need to do? If I put a windows xp cd in it got to the install screen and when I click enter so it will find a previous version and ask to format the computer halts so it doesn’t damage the drive.

Mar 20, 2009I want to format my vista to reinstall it with my recovery drive. Here`s the question when i bought my pc i made 3 other partition on my hard drive. If i reinstall with the recovery drive will it reset my partition and put it back has one hard drive?

Sep 17, 2008I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.

Feb 3, 2009I installed 7 earlier and when I rebooted to go back to vista it said recovery partition not found, so I decided to log back into windows 7 and it was corrupt so I was like no big deal I will use recovery discs to log back in, nope it didn't work. I started this at 11am this morning 9 hours ago and I am back online but using windows 7. Vista kept getting stuck at not being able to find recovery partition and wouldn't get past it. I am using the recovery discs I create on my HP m9350f and I am stuck. Now my question is if I have an OEM version of Home Premium 64 bit can I reinstall vista when this beta expires? Can I install it as a dual boot with 7 being installed first and not loose anything when beta expires?

May 28, 2009Does anyone know if there is a downloadable version of Vista? I have a gateway laptop and had a crash. I tried to use the recovery partition and instead of reinstalling my system, it wiped it and then said something to the effect of insert you recovery cd. Well I bought my computer at Best Buy and of course they don't provide the discs with the computer!! Ahhhhh!!!! My computer came with Vista installed and I have a valid CD Key, but no disk now. I have ordered a recovery disk, but it will take up to 8 business days to get here. Does anyone know if you can download an evaluation copy of Vista or any copy of Vista for that mater??? I figure all I need to do is get it installed and I can use my CD Key.

Oct 11, 2009I had a cpu fan die and the computer would not turn on, so i thought it was my hard drive. Replaced the hard drive and installed Vista but not completely. Then found that the cpu fan wasn't working, replaced that and put my old drive back in. Now when Vista starts up i get an error screen asking to press enter. When pressing enter i get a choice of 2 vista installations. Only one works, the old one, so i always choose that. For me its not a problem but this freaks out the other employees here. So i need to get rid of the half completed installation. How do i do this?

Dec 28, 2008I recently rebuilt my machine (see system specs) and when I went to pop in my old HDD as a secondary drive to pull some files from it, Windows decided it needed to run chkdsk on it. I tried to stop it, as this is a 500GB drive so I knew it would take forever, but I couldn't stop it. So after a few hours, it finished and let me in, but now all of the files are missing. This was my old C: (primary) drive, so it should have Windows, Users, Program Data, etc folders but it doesn't. it just has a few empty folders (Nvidia, Intel...) However when you check the properties of the disk, it shows that several GB's are used, so I know my data is around there somewhere. Changing the folder options to view hidden does not help. The OS on this disk was Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

Aug 4, 2008My last "out of range" recovery attempt caused me to lose some data. I'm using a Compaq SR5410F with Vista and have been dealing with the standard "out of range" message quite frequently. Nov 1, 2009I currently have vista installed of course on my C: drive, but I want to reinstall to a partitioned drive at the moment it is called I: drive (reason a lot more space on I than is on C).
So I figure a clean install onto the current I: drive.
Now this is where I need help, I do not want two versions of vista on the same PC, I am guessing vista will remain on the current C: drive there by creating a dual boot?
So how would I go about deleting the current vista installed, and put it on my I: drive?
What would happen if I was to format the current C: drive, have my disk there at the ready, would that work?

My question is this.... upon installing vista, all the other cds that came with it, i have a roxio creator & mydvd cd 9.0 DE. cd says on it, install this cd, (PROGRAM)... also a dell drivers and utilities that is already installed on my computer and this dvd is for reinstalling dell inspiron comp software, and an application thats already installed on my comp, for reinstalling cyberlink powerdvd 7.0 software.. so besides using my OS 32 bit reinstallation dvd, vista, am i supposed to also reinstall the stuff on the dvds i mentioned above?

Hello from France. Here is my problem of the day... I just put a new, 160 Go hard disk in my Dell Inspiron laptop. Then, following Dell's instructions as found on a flyer that came with the machine, this is what I did :
1. install Dell's "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3" DVD
2. install Vista
3. finish with "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3"
At stage 2 I choose to have C: at 50 Go, leaving the rest to D: Once Vista was installed, I found that D: had yet to be formatted, which I did. Now, as I take a look at the system, I find that there are in fact 4 volumes: - one is 47 Mo -"Type :" basic -"Statut :" Sound (Configuration EISA) ; this one can't be touched
- second is 2,01 Go - "Type :" basic - "Statut :" Sound (Principal partition) ;
this one can be deleted.......
